Chapter 25 - Rest

(T/N) and Chloe ran without looking back, their footsteps audible in the corridor.

Chloe was breathing with great difficulty and had her hand clenched over the wound on her back.

— (T/N): Almost there! Hold on!

Upon exiting the narrow tunnel, the glare was revealed. It was not the light of the sun, but the light of a very large underground room. It was the subway train depot.

The place was enormous, full of old, rusty, and dusty trains. The light came from lamps on the ceiling, filling the space with brightness.

The noises of the creatures following them stopped abruptly upon reaching the entrance of the depot.

(T/N) turned to see the tunnel they had just left.

He saw the red creatures. They didn't move. There were several of them, grouped together in the darkness, at the edge of the light. Their bright eyes watched them, but their bodies remained in the shadow, scared.

— (T/N): They won't cross... the light.

— Chloe: I know —Chloe said, leaning weakly against the wall—. They don't seem to like it.

(T/N) took Chloe by the arm and led her further inside the depot.

— (T/N): We must rest.

(T/N) helped Chloe climb into a cargo wagon with open doors. Inside, the darkness was greater, but the light from the depot entered through the doors.

Chloe collapsed onto the wagon floor. (T/N) sat beside her and turned on his flashlight to check the wound. Blood was still flowing from Chloe's back.

— (T/N): The wound is deep.

— Chloe: We'll be fine, (T/N) —Chloe whispered, her voice now very faint from the blood loss—. We are on the edge of the darkness. The light bought us time.

(T/N) checked his phone in silence. It was 3:00 a.m. Several hours had passed since they entered.

— (T/N): What do we do now, Chloe?

Chloe closed her eyes, exhausted.

— Chloe: I don't know.

(T/N) looked at Chloe's wound. He knew they couldn't keep running like this.

— (T/N): You can't move anymore. We have to wait.

Chloe nodded with a very slight gesture. The silence inside the wagon did not fit with the danger that lurked around them.

I really have no idea what I'm writing, nor do I know if I'll continue with this novel; I still have many ideas to explore.
