Chapter 140 - Chapter 24 – The Cost of Going Beyond, Part8

Part 8 – Home

The house was quiet, the hum of the evening settling into every corner. The aroma of cooking filled the kitchen as Akari moved efficiently, chopping vegetables and stirring pots. Ayame hovered nearby, handing her ingredients, asking quietly, "Do you need help with the soup, Aka?"

Akari smiled faintly, grateful. "Yes, just pass me the carrots, please."

In the living room, Haruto sat slouched on the sofa, his body heavy from exhaustion. Even now, his chest rose and fell slowly, as if each breath was a small effort. He stared blankly at the ceiling, mind wandering through fragments of the day—the tournament, the fights, Raizen's revelations.

Kaito plopped down beside him, bouncing slightly on the sofa arm. "So… spill it," he said with an energetic grin. "What exactly did big brother Raizen make you do? Push-ups? Thousand of them? Secret techniques? Did he teach you something insane?"

Haruto let out a low sigh, barely moving. "…Nothing insane," he murmured.

Ayame stepped in, leaning against the doorway between the kitchen and living room, arms crossed. "Kaito, don't push him. He's tired."

Kaito ignored her half-heartedly, eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Come on! You defeated Arashi, controlled water, survived that crazy strain on your Seiryu… you must have learned something. At least tell me one thing."

Haruto's lips twitched, almost a faint smile. "He just… made me train. A lot. That's it."

Kaito blinked. "Train… a lot? That's it?"

"Yes," Haruto replied quietly, voice low and rough from strain. "Push-ups, stamina, flow control. Fire and water."

Ayame raised an eyebrow. "Both elements?"

Haruto nodded faintly. "I already knew fire. He… made me work on water because of Arashi. Said I'd need it."

Kaito whistled, impressed despite himself. "So, that's why you were able to pull it off… in the arena. And here I thought you were just showing off."

Haruto shifted slightly, head dropping back onto the sofa. "Not showing off. Just… survival."

From the kitchen, Akari called out, "Dinner will be ready soon! Ayame, can you set the table?"

Ayame moved toward the dining area, glancing once at Haruto. "You need to eat something. You pushed too hard today."

Haruto didn't respond immediately, eyes still half-lidded. Kaito nudged him. "You hear that? Eat or I'll feed you myself."

A small, dry laugh escaped Haruto. "Fine."

Meanwhile, Renjiro's footsteps could be heard retreating to his room upstairs, the sound of his door clicking shut marking the quiet of the house again.

Akari hummed softly as she chopped, glancing over at the two siblings. "You both need to make sure he rests properly. No pushing today, understood?"

Ayame nodded. "We'll make sure."

Kaito leaned closer to Haruto, smirking. "Seriously though… teach me that water thing sometime. Or I'll make you regret keeping secrets from your little brother."

Haruto turned his head slightly toward him, a faint glimmer in his tired eyes. "Maybe. But not today."

The kitchen timer beeped softly, pulling everyone's attention. Akari called out, "Table's set! Come eat!"

Slowly, they moved toward the dining area, quiet footsteps echoing in the calm house. The chaos of the tournament, the strain, the secrets—it all felt distant here. Safe.

For the first time since the arena, Haruto let himself exhale, letting the exhaustion settle fully into his bones. And for a moment, nothing mattered but the warmth of home, the quiet companionship of family, and the simple comfort of food waiting at the table.

The warm smell of stew filled the kitchen. Akari moved efficiently between the stove and the counter, stirring the pot while Ayame set the table, her movements precise and quiet. Haruto sat slouched on the sofa, exhaustion still etched into his posture, while Kaito leaned against the wall, arms crossed, eyes fixed on him.

"Big brother," Kaito began, smirking, "tell me—what all did Raizen teach you? Don't leave anything out!"

Haruto slowly lifted his head, eyes narrowing slightly. "First of all… I'm your little brother," he said flatly. "You are not my little brother."

Kaito blinked, then laughed, pointing at him. "Whoa, okay, chill! Little brother, big brother… whatever. Just tell me!"

Haruto groaned, shifting on the sofa. "Fine. Survived the tournament. Learned things. That's it. Happy?"

Kaito grinned, leaning closer. "No! Come on, you can't just leave it there! Did he make you do pushups? Sit-ups? That crazy hyper-energy stuff he loves?"

Ayame, carrying a bowl of soup to the table, interjected softly. "He did mention pushups. Apparently, a hundred of them before he collapsed twice."

Haruto's lips twitched, almost a smile. "Worth it," he muttered.

Kaito gasped dramatically. "Before you collapsed?! Are you insane?"

Akari placed a ladle of stew onto Haruto's plate, frowning slightly. "Enough complaining, Kaito. Eat before it gets cold. And Haruto, try not to fall asleep mid-dinner."

Haruto finally moved to sit at the table, exhaustion weighing on him but manageable. Ayame poured the soup while Kaito hovered, still firing questions.

"So," Kaito whispered, leaning conspiratorially toward him, "when Raizen trained you… did he yell at you like he does with everyone else? Or was it different?"

Haruto shrugged. "He pushed me. A lot. But it wasn't just yelling. He made me focus… control myself. That's why I could fight Arashi the way I did."

Kaito's eyes widened. "Wow… you actually learned something. No way I could've done that."

Ayame rolled her eyes with a soft laugh. "Kaito, stop exaggerating. He's already tired."

Akari muttered, "And you're not helping by asking fifty questions at once."

From the staircase came a soft creak. Renjiro descended, adjusting his jacket, eyes serious.

"Dinner smells good," he said quietly. "Mind if I join?"

"Of course!" Akari said, gesturing to the empty chair. "Sit before it gets cold."

Renjiro settled in but hesitated. "I… have a mission tomorrow. I won't be able to attend the award ceremony."

Kaito and Ayame exchanged disappointed glances.

"Wait, what? Don't go!" Kaito exclaimed. "Everyone will be there!"

Renjiro shook his head. "It's important. Very important. I have to go."

Ayame tilted her head. "So you were wrapping things up today, that's why you're free now?"

Renjiro nodded. "Yes. Had to prepare. Make sure everything's in order before I leave."

Kaito groaned, slumping slightly. "Ugh… you really are never around when we need you."

Haruto, still tired, took a small spoonful of stew. "Sounds serious. Don't get yourself in trouble."

Renjiro gave a faint smile. "I'll be fine. Just focus on enjoying dinner. And the ceremony—you'll tell me all about it later."

The room settled into a comfortable rhythm. Kaito still whispered questions to Haruto, Ayame occasionally answered or teased him, and Haruto, despite exhaustion, gave short, honest replies, while Renjiro ate quietly, mentally preparing for his mission tomorrow.

For the first time since the tournament chaos, the household felt calm. Safe. Together—even if only for a brief moment before the next challenges awaited.
