Part 6 — The Longest Afternoon
The remaining classes passed far slower than usual.
Even when Daigo continued teaching normally—
very few students truly focused.
Misaki quietly continued writing notes without causing attention toward herself again.
Haruto occasionally glanced toward her unconsciously.
Kaito remained unusually quiet after returning from the hallway.
And Ayame had started noticing both of her brothers carefully now.
Especially Kaito.
Because every few minutes—
his eyes shifted toward them automatically.
Like he was checking whether they were still there.
Eventually—
the final bell rang.
The classroom slowly loosened afterward.
Books closed.
Chairs moved.
Students quietly began preparing to leave.
Daigo stood near the front while organizing papers calmly.
"…Review today's notes properly."
Several students nodded quietly.
Then one by one—
they slowly started leaving the classroom.
Misaki packed her things quietly too.
No one stopped her.
No one knew how to.
As she walked toward the door, Yuna softly called out:
"…Misaki."
Misaki paused slightly.
Yuna hesitated briefly.
Then quietly said:
"…See you tomorrow."
A very small smile appeared on Misaki's face.
Weak.
But genuine.
"…Yeah."
Then she quietly left the classroom.
Kaito watched her leave silently.
And somehow—
that made his chest feel heavy again.
Soon afterward—
the triplets also left the classroom together.
The academy hallways remained quieter than normal.
Even other students spoke less while leaving.
Outside—
the afternoon sky had already begun dimming slightly.
Haruto stretched his arms while walking down the academy stairs.
"…I'm hungry again."
Ayame looked at him immediately.
"…You're always hungry."
Haruto frowned slightly.
"…That's because Aka's food is good."
For the first time all day—
Kaito gave a very small smile.
But it disappeared quickly again.
Ayame noticed.
"…Kaito?"
He immediately looked toward her.
"…Hm?"
"…You've been quiet."
"…I'm normal."
Haruto immediately responded:
"…No you're not."
Kaito looked away slightly afterward.
Then quietly asked:
"…Do deployed shinobi usually come back fast?"
Both Haruto and Ayame became silent briefly.
Ayame answered first.
"…Sometimes."
Kaito continued walking quietly beside them.
"…What about border missions?"
Haruto looked toward him now.
"…Why are you asking so much?"
Kaito shook his head slightly.
"…Nothing."
