Suzuki Makoto gently set down the brother and sister in his arms and looked at the two eyeballs that had rolled in front of him.
To cut off one's own neck with threads first to avoid the damage from that slash... it was certainly a clever little trick, but it was just a little trick, nothing more.
While catching the falling Nezuko Kamado, Suzuki Makoto had also sliced the demon's head into mince, leaving only a pair of eyes to confirm the target of the kill.
"Lower Rank Five... so it seems the demon ranks are quite strong. This Lower Rank Five is worlds stronger than that Lower Rank Six; it's basically like all his abilities were doubled."
Suzuki Makoto's vigilance towards the Twelve Kizuki was raised another notch.
If their abilities double with each rank up, starting from Lower Rank Six, then the strength of the Upper Rank demons...
"They should be able to give me a good fight."
Musing to himself, the man tossed the question to the back of his mind. A member of the Twelve Kizuki was dead. The little demon that ran off didn't matter. Besides, he had already sensed that Shinobu Kocho had arrived, and killing that sort of small fry was a piece of cake for her.
Tanjiro Kamado's body could move again. He immediately looked to his sister, and seeing that Nezuko had simply fallen asleep again, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Mr. Suzuki, thank you for saving me!"
"You're welcomeâoh? To be able to hide so deeply."
Suzuki Makoto instantly drew his blade and slashed into the empty air.
"Meowâ!!!"
A calico cat was frightened into revealing itself, trembling as it prostrated on the ground, begging for mercy.
"Not a demon, just using a demon's power?"
The man had shown mercy because it was the first time he'd seen such a situation, and a spark of curiosity ignited in his heart.
"Mr. Suzuki! That'sâthat's my friend's cat!"
Tanjiro was also covered in sweat. He had never sensed Chachamaru's presence, and was shocked that Mr. Suzuki could locate it so precisely.
"Tanjiro, although your sister has never eaten a human, you shouldn't get involved with too many demons."
Suzuki Makoto warned.
"Like that guy just now, I believe you could also feel the emotions he had as he died. Perhaps they have tragic pasts and fates worthy of sympathyâbut those judgments can only be made after they are dead."
"Yes, Mr. Suzuki! But Yuâ But its masters don't eat people either! They can survive on just a little blood, and they're trying to research a medicine to turn demons back into humans. That's why they asked for my help in collecting demon blood."
Tanjiro Kamado nodded very seriously. On this matter, he knew how to draw a clear line.
"If that's the case, then go ahead and help them collect it for now."
Suzuki Makoto held out his hand, and Tanjiro took out the collection syringe from his pocket and passed it over.
"Hmm, is this a vacuum tube? Now I'm a little more convinced. They've clearly put a lot of effort into their research."
The man jabbed the syringe into the demon's half-disintegrated body, collected the blood, and then placed the syringe into the small backpack on the cat's back.
The trembling cat immediately vanished into thin air again. It truly didn't want to stay here a moment longer. Next time, if this guy was still with Tanjiro, it would absolutely, positively not come anywhere near.
"Tanjiro, can you stand up now? I'll carry Nezuko. Let's leave this place for now. The support team is approaching, so let's get you some treatment first."
"Okay, thank you for your trouble, Mr. Suzuki."
Tanjiro struggled to his feet. Supported by Suzuki Makoto, he was barely able to walk. Nezuko was draped over Suzuki Makoto's shoulder, sleeping soundly.
"Has Miss Kocho arrived? Could I trouble you to helpâ"
Clang clang clang clang!
The woman turned her head with a smile, revealing the peculiar blade in her hand.
"What are you doing, Mr. Suzuki?"
"Saving a Corps member. And blocking your attack."
The man's words had a matter-of-fact simplicity.
"But that's a demon, you know."
"Miss! She's my sister! Even though she's a demon, sheâ"
"Is that so? How pitiful."
Shinobu Kocho didn't have the patience to listen to Tanjiro Kamado's words. She simply raised her blade once more.
"âThen let me kill her with a poison that won't cause her any pain."
"Wait a moment."
Suzuki Makoto objected.
"Miss Kocho, Nezuko has truly never eaten a single person. I believe this is a very good start. At the very least, it proves that not all demons are completely controlled by the Demon King, Muzan Kibutsuji. This might bring a different future to our battle against demons."
"But, Mr. Suzuki, humans and demons can never coexist peacefully."
"Oh? But I thought that was the phrase you always kept on your lips?"
Hearing this, the smile on Shinobu Kocho's face finally vanished. She looked at Suzuki Makoto, her expression blank.
"This expression looks more comfortable. That smile from before was quite unsettling, you know, Miss Kocho."
Suzuki Makoto's words sounded a bit flippant, but his steady blade had already proven his stance.
"Mr. Suzuki, according to Corps regulations, letting a demon go is a punishable offense."
"I am willing to appeal to Lord Ubuyashiki, so that everyone can discuss how to handle Nezuko Kamado."
"And what if the final decision is to kill her?"
"Then I suppose I'll have no choice but to escape with the siblings first, and then find a way to hunt other demons while hiding from the Demon Slayer Corps."
Shinobu Kocho's blade didn't waver in the slightest.
"It seems you're serious about protecting them."
"I've heard that Insect Breathing is also derived from Water Breathing. I would indeed like to witness this unique technique for myself."
Suzuki Makoto didn't even put down Nezuko, who was on his back.
"Kanao."
A silent girl appeared at Shinobu Kocho's side.
"You keep an eye on that demon. I'll deal with the Hashira."
The girl drew her Nichirin Blade and aimed it at Nezuko without a word.
Tanjiro Kamado thought, nervous and helpless. He really didn't know what to do now. Was Mr. Suzuki going to get kicked out of the Demon Slayer Corps just for being involved in Nezuko's affairs?
Just as the situation grew tense and swords were drawn, a Kasugai Crow flew above their heads.
"Message! Message! A message from headquarters! Capture Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado, and bring them back to headquarters!"
"Tanjiro Kamado! A human with a checkered haori and a scar on his forehead!"
"Nezuko Kamado! A demon girl with a bamboo muzzle!"
A slight smile touched the corner of Suzuki Makoto's lips as he simply watched Shinobu Kocho, who calmly sheathed her blade. Kanao Tsuyuri, at her side, did the same.
"Let's go, Tanjiro. Don't worry, my promise is always valid."
The boy relaxed completely, his eyes filled with nothing but gratitude as he looked at Suzuki Makoto.
"Thank you, Mr. Suzuki!"
