The moment Kyuushin stepped into the medical department's main tent, he was hit by the overwhelming scent of alcohol and antiseptic. He covered his nose, taking a moment to adapt before the smell became less pungent.
Lady Tsunade was in the middle of her rounds. She spotted Kyuushin and didn't mince words. "Kyuushin, you're with Doctor Zenbu. Handle the severe external wounds; I'll take the critical cases." After giving her orders, she returned to the frontline camp, as she, Orochimaru, and Jiraiya were primarily responsible for combat missions, while Tsunade was in charge of logistics and medical work. Kyuushin looked around and noticed there weren't many injured ninja at the moment, only about ten or so. Although a full-scale battle hadn't erupted, small skirmishes were clearly happening.
Just then, a middle-aged man in a white coat walked over. "Hello," he said, "I am Zenbu. Lady Tsunade has already briefed me on your situation. You will assist me with external wound treatment from now on."
"Yes, Doctor Zenbu," Kyuushin nodded and then followed him to the first cot. The ninja's thigh was a mess of raw, torn flesh from what looked like a close-range explosive tag. The blast damage was secondary to the real problem: infection. The wound was festering, oozing yellow pus, and the man was burning with fever.
Without a word, Zenbu administered an injection, then looked at Kyuushin. "I have temporarily controlled his inflammation with medication. What needs to be done now is to first cut out the infected and festering parts of his wound. Only then can we use a Chakra Scalpel or other medical ninjutsu for treatment." Direct healing was impossible with such a severe infection. This was understandable, but Kyuushin shook his head. "I have only learned a few medical ninjutsu and haven't practiced wound excision."
Nodding, Zenbu was not surprised and called out, "Shuko, come here." Soon, a girl of about fifteen or sixteen years old walked over. "Excise the infected part," Zenbu instructed, and then moved on to the next patient. Shuko took out a scalpel and skillfully performed the excision while Kyuushin took the time to put on a mask and gloves. He then walked to her side, watching silently as she cut away the dead tissue before rinsing the wound with hydrogen peroxide and saline.
At this point, it was Kyuushin's turn. A soft green light emanated from his palms as he placed them over the cleaned wound. The bleeding ceased almost instantly. Under the steady flow of his chakra, the raw flesh began to knit together, new tissue forming where there had been only a gaping injury. After about twenty minutes, the wound began to close, though complete recovery would require more treatments. The preliminary treatment was complete. Just as he was about to wipe the sweat from his brow, a small hand beside him offered a cloth. Kyuushin took it, then looked up at Shuko.
"When I was at the hospital before, I always did this when the doctors finished using ninjutsu," she explained. Kyuushin nodded without speaking, but Shuko spoke again. "Your medical ninjutsu is truly excellent. It heals wounds faster than any doctor I've seen."
"You flatter me," Kyuushin replied. He had seen the healing speed of Mito and Tsunade, which was far more proficient than his own. He took her words as a kind compliment. Changing into a new set of masks and gloves, he walked to the next patient, which appeared to be a laceration that had already been sutured. The doctor there said, "Doctor Zenbu instructed me to clean and suture it, then hand it over to you."
Nodding, Kyuushin had no intention of complaining. His skills were in healing, not the preliminary work. Zenbu's system was aimed at increasing efficiency. The chakra cost for healing wasn't too high; in fact, the chakra he expended couldn't even keep up with his natural recovery. Aside from the mental exhaustion, Kyuushin felt he could last a long time. He began to treat one patient after another, as if following a routine.
"Excellent. Your medical ninjutsu is stronger than most doctors in the hospital. Would you like to come work with us later?" Kyuushin's hands paused. He turned his head and realized it was Doctor Zenbu, looking at him with a smiling face. "Doctor Zenbu, you flatter me. I only know a bit of medical ninjutsu; my other skills are far from it," Kyuushin said.
"If you don't know other things, you can learn them. I can tell you have a great aptitude for medicine," Zenbu said, his expression unchanged. Tsunade had asked him this question before, but after learning it required memorizing dozens of thick medical books, he had abandoned the idea. "No, I prefer learning ninjutsu. Learning medical ninjutsu is just for emergencies," Kyuushin refused.
"What a pity." Zenbu also knew Kyuushin was Tsunade's disciple and was unlikely to specialize solely in medical arts, so he could only regretfully walk away. After spending two or three hours, Kyuushin had treated all dozen patients. As he walked out of the tent, the sky had already begun to darken. He was surprised to find Nawaki had been waiting outside the entire time.
"Why have you been staying here?" he asked curiously.
"When we left, didn't Grandma say I had to stay by your side? I couldn't go inside, so I've been waiting for you out here," Nawaki said, looking at Kyuushin as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Alright then." Although he knew Mito's statement was an exaggeration, since Nawaki was willing to follow him, he didn't bother to correct him. Taking a deep breath, Kyuushin intended to get some fresh air. However, being near the border of the Land of Rain, the climate was very humid and muggy, which was uncomfortable and extremely unfavorable for the wounded. It was very easy for wounds to develop complications.
Kyuushin thought for a moment, then found the command post of the logistics camp. After being announced, he walked in and saw Tsunade writing furiously at a desk. She didn't even lift her head. "Is there something you need?"
Kyuushin got straight to the point. "The climate here is humid and muggy, which is very unfavorable for the recovery of the wounded. If I could make the climate within the camp a bit drier, do you think it would be useful?"
"Oh?" Tsunade stopped writing at his words, looking up at him. "Of course it would be useful. Can you do it?"
"It shouldn't be too difficult. I want to use a sealing technique to create a barrier jutsu to keep the inside dry. This kind of single-purpose barrier shouldn't require a large amount of chakra," Kyuushin said.
Tsunade nodded. "At that time, the logistics personnel can take turns providing chakra. But are you sure you can create it?"
"I'll try," Kyuushin didn't make any guarantees, but with his current level of sealing techniques, as long as he found the right approach, it shouldn't be too difficult.
"Alright, then go back and try. If you really succeed, it will be considered a meritorious deed," Tsunade said, then waved him away.
However, although he said it wouldn't be difficult, it was, after all, his first time creating a new barrier ninjutsu from scratch. Upon returning to the camp, Kyuushin began to ponder deeply, occasionally taking out a new scroll and drawing on it. Nawaki and Minato curiously asked about it, but upon learning he was going to create a new barrier, both of them exchanged glances. Nawaki had never passed in sealing techniques, and though Minato had high talent, he had only been studying for a short time. Neither could offer any ideas. Fortunately, Kyuushin's foundation was solid. After working all night, he finally created the barrier ninjutsu.
