Chapter 17: Upside Down Preparation
POV: Adam
November 19th, night, and Adam slips from the Byers house like a ghost abandoning its haunt, bare feet silent on floorboards that have learned to keep his secrets. The November air bites through his borrowed pajamas, but the cold feels clean compared to the fever of foreknowledge that's been burning in his chest since sunset.
Tomorrow night. Tomorrow night, Joyce and Hopper mount their rescue mission.
Scout waits in the familiar woods like a guardian shadow, his flower-face petals unfurling in greeting as Adam approaches. The creature's loyalty has deepened into something approaching worship over the past weeks—absolute devotion forged in shared trauma and reinforced by the pack bonds that transcend species.
Good boy. Ready to work?
The response comes as a pulse of eager anticipation. Scout has been sensing the dimensional instability that precedes major breaches, his predatory instincts screaming warnings about the apex predator that stalks the spaces between worlds. But tonight, instead of fear, there's purpose. Tonight, they hunt with strategy rather than desperation.
[DIMENSIONAL BREACH ACTIVITY: CRITICAL]
[RESCUE MISSION PROBABILITY: 87% SUCCESS WITH INTERVENTION]
[WITHOUT INTERVENTION: 34% SUCCESS]
[RECOMMENDED ACTION: COVERT SUPPORT]
Adam's system displays the cold mathematics of survival while his borrowed heart pounds with something warmer and more dangerous than logic. He knows the route Joyce and Hopper will take through the nightmare landscape—every wrong turn, every moment of hesitation, every point where courage might falter in the face of impossible horror.
I can't save Will myself. But I can make sure they succeed.
Through the bond, he sends complex instructions to his assembled creatures. Scout understands immediately, his intelligence having grown alongside his loyalty. The Alpha Demodog—evolution-forged into something that barely resembles its juvenile origins—radiates predatory satisfaction at being given a mission worthy of its capabilities.
The Vine Crawlers are slower to comprehend, their plant-based consciousness processing commands with deliberate care. But they're perfect for this work—living camouflage that can position themselves throughout the Upside Down's toxic landscape, creating subtle guidance that will seem like environmental coincidence rather than deliberate intervention.
Two Vine Crawlers at the portal entrance. Bioluminescent spores to mark the safe path. Scout at the midpoint—visible enough to guide, distant enough to avoid triggering fight-or-flight responses. Alpha at Castle Byers itself, clearing threats before the humans arrive.
Each creature acknowledges their assignment with the kind of precision that only comes from absolute trust. They don't understand the larger strategy, don't need to comprehend the ethics of manipulation disguised as salvation. They simply trust their pack leader's judgment and prepare to risk their lives for the success of his plan.
This is wrong. I'm using foreknowledge to manipulate events, playing puppet master with other people's choices.
But as Adam maps the rescue route with surgical precision, another voice whispers from the depths of his borrowed conscience: And if you do nothing? If you let them stumble through that nightmare without guidance? How many people die because you were too proud to intervene?
The ethical dilemma sits in his chest like acid. Every advantage he provides increases the rescue mission's chances of success, but it also transforms Joyce and Hopper from heroes into unwitting pawns in a game they don't even know they're playing.
That's when his system offers the ultimate temptation.
[OPTIONAL QUEST: DIRECT RESCUE OPERATION]
[EXTRACT WILL BYERS PERSONALLY]
[REWARD: 5000 XP, MAJOR STORY DEVIATION]
[WARNING: HIGH EXPOSURE RISK]
[ACCEPT? Y/N]
For a moment, Adam stares at the offer with desperate longing. He could end this tonight. March into the Upside Down with his creature army, tear Will Byers from the Demogorgon's feeding chamber, and deliver him safely to his family's arms. No more watching from the shadows, no more careful manipulation—just direct action that saves a life and ends a mother's torment.
I could be the hero. I could save him myself.
But heroism isn't about power. It's about making the right choice even when the wrong choice would be easier, more satisfying, more immediately rewarding.
No, Adam thinks, declining the quest for the first time since his system activated. They need to be the heroes. Joyce needs to save her son. That's how this story is supposed to work.
[QUEST DECLINED]
[NO PENALTY ASSESSED]
[CHARACTER GROWTH DETECTED: MORAL INTEGRITY]
[NEW TRAIT UNLOCKED: SELFLESS LEADERSHIP]
The relief that floods through him feels like absolution. He's not the protagonist of this story—he's the supporting character who makes sure the real heroes succeed. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is step aside and let others shine.
His creatures spread through the woods with silent efficiency, each moving toward predetermined positions that will support tomorrow night's rescue without revealing their artificial nature. Scout sends a final pulse of affection through the bond before disappearing into shadows that seem designed to swallow hope.
Tomorrow night, Will comes home. And no one will ever know I had anything to do with it.
Adam turns back toward the house, exhaustion weighing on shoulders that feel too narrow for the responsibility he's chosen to carry. But as he approaches the back door, a figure emerges from the kitchen—Jonathan, hair rumpled with sleep and eyes sharp with concern.
"Where were you?"
Caught. Of course I'm caught.
Adam freezes, Upside Down residue still clinging to his clothes like evidence of crimes he can't confess. Jonathan studies his appearance with the careful attention of someone who's learned to read between the lines of official explanations.
"I was..." Adam begins, then stops. How do you explain interdimensional creature positioning to someone who doesn't even know other dimensions exist?
Tell him the truth. Part of it, anyway.
"Making sure Mom and Hopper will be safe tomorrow," Adam says finally. "When they go after Will."
Jonathan's eyes widen slightly. "You know something's going to happen."
"Yeah. And I'm making sure it doesn't go wrong."
Please don't ask for details. Please don't make me lie to you more than I already have.
Jonathan stares at him for a long moment, reading exhaustion and determination and the kind of desperate hope that doesn't admit defeat even in the face of impossible odds.
Then he nods slowly, acceptance replacing suspicion.
"Okay. I trust you."
He trusts me. After everything, he trusts me.
"Get some sleep," Jonathan continues, stepping aside to let Adam pass. "Tomorrow's going to be hard enough without you collapsing from exhaustion."
[JONATHAN BYERS RELATIONSHIP: COMPLETE TRUST (90%)]
[MORAL INTEGRITY TRAIT: ACTIVATED]
[ALPHA DEMODOG LOYALTY: 80%]
[RESCUE MISSION PREPARATION: COMPLETE]
Adam climbs the stairs to Will's room on legs that feel like they're made of lead and good intentions. Behind him, Jonathan returns to whatever late-night vigil he's been keeping, trusting his strange little brother to keep promises he doesn't fully understand.
Dawn in six hours. Rescue mission in eighteen. And then, if everything goes according to plan, this family will be whole again.
As Adam settles into Will's bed, surrounded by drawings that prophesied the nightmare about to end, he allows himself to feel something dangerously close to pride. Not in his power or his knowledge, but in his choice to use both in service of something larger than personal glory.
I'm not the hero of this story. But maybe that's enough.
Through the walls between dimensions, he senses a faint pulse of life—Will Byers, still fighting, still holding on with the stubborn courage that runs in his family like a genetic inheritance.
One more day, little brother. Just hold on for one more day.
