Chapter 26 - Ch. 4: The Regarded, Regardless. Pt. 2

Knowing Ryu was already on the job too gave more than enough leeway for Vitale to not bother thinking twice about where Trixxie had ran off to. If she had went anywhere she shouldn't have, he would have followed. If she had shifted the trajectory of her fate in a way that immediately jeopardized her safety, he would have undone it. If there was no time to report, he wouldn't. He also wouldn't report what she was up to if he didn't think it needed to be reported either.

He was even more of a kid prodigy than the Ozzball had been. Ryu wouldn't hesitate to wipe the floor with anyone who laid a hand on Trixxie far faster than they even technically really did it in the first place. He also wouldn't show mercy by not punishing them for crimes he didn't even give them the chance to truly commit. A lot of the kids that had been born where he was were hunted for their abilities. Ryu had made a a habit of hunting the kind of people that might take the wrong kinds of interest in Trixxie by the time he was her age.

When the Yin-Yang Dynasty had elected to take that kid in, his dark enough hair and eyes made it logical to keep the fact that he was adopted off the record. As the youngest member of the main nuclear family, he was targeted enough as it was. As a preemptive strike against just how volatile some of the less than noble opposition from his closer relatives might get to him being raised in Zayin, very few people knew he was alive either. All of the ones who knew of Ryu were also brief in how he hailed from the same land Ozzy was born in once upon a time. Being cut from the same cloth as Ryu even just in theory was more than enough to have started several rumors about whatever Ozzy's connection was to Yuri too.

The people of Zbi used various levels of influence from the shadow planes to their advantages in so many ways on even innate reflex. The hothead in question was still often far cooler than he seemed to be under pressure, he just got a kick out of playing the big bad wolf. It was only a matter of time before Yuri figured out why Ozzy had easily escaped her. He had used the same exact trick Zory often did when she wanted to give her cousin the slip as well. In all reality, Zory had lived there from time to time too, but she kept who was or wasn't a Zbi born ward of various states under lock in most recent centuries. Ozzy's status was off the record for now, but that stunt may have given him away.

Vitale was proficient enough to track Ryu if he had been off radar far too long for comfort, but catching Ozzy off guard for a second time tonight was not going to happen.

"If you ever actually just listened to Yuri?" Vitale spelled out with a sigh as he maintained his hold on Ozzy. "You would be able to get it through your skull that there's no way Zory could ever die on her watch, buddy. It just won't happen."

Face down in the dirt beneath the glowing zelestial form of Vitale made Ozzy's pull on shadows just as useless as Zory's gravity based pins did when he was on his back. With his marks on display, the amount of power he was channeling from the stars was a sign he wasn't messing around, but Ozzy really wasn't either. The pain of the light being radiated was not a new ordeal to him, but Vitale being the one to do what Iz usually would was infuriating.

"Get off of me, man!" He spat without any sign of wanting to trust anyone but himself with Zory's safety in the slightest. "I get why you think you've got this one in the bag, but I promise you, you don't… The second she launches here it won't just be about whatever Matilda will try to claim next, Vizarrio… The nightmares have been especially bad lately and you already know what that means, dude… Get off!"

Taking on a starling even in a later life kind of protégé mix was never an easy job to navigate. Trying to restrain this exact hypernova when he sensed the amount of people on the move in hopes of taking a crack at the supernova he was bound to was not going to be an easy task either. Vitale doubled down on his decision to do as Zory asked by adding a bit of gravity to the mix. As the ground cracked beneath them, Ozzy's new awareness that Vitale was bound to her too was enough to shut him up for at least a few more minutes or so. Power-sharing was common in other worlds, but still highly frowned upon in most of Zayin. It would raise more question than it answered regarding what had or hadn't happened with him and Zory before he was outcasted from Zimiiria.

"I get that you're a pledge, Ozzy baby." Vitale continued with every intent of talking down to him as much as he could stand to. But I really suggest you stop tempting me any further to finally show you how much more power comes with finally being properly anchored to her instead of just being a pledge like you still are… You've got a few tethers that are still just adorable and several that are plain disturbing to let fester like they are. When you do ascend, or rather if granted how much she can't your behavior as of late… If you do, if little Ozzball, if you do complete the rites of passage to truly be under her leadership, only then Ozzy, then you may continue to be an absolute brat about judgment calls you don't like."

This implied she had marred her own anchor.

"You're an anchor…?" The wayward little starling at his mercy asked the second his monologue came to an end. "You really expect me to believe she really anchored you?!"

"Now, now, now, Ozzy baby." Vitale cooed with a bitter scoff at how impossible that possibility may be. "Just because she shot you down cold for your own good doesn't mean I can't help you win her over on mostly your own laurels if you just say pretty please like a good boy."

Of all the kinds of help Ozzy Noiré had forced himself to accept he might need even if he didn't want it, help from a sleazy has-been like Vitale Vizarrio wasn't going to be one.

"Anchor or not?" Ozzy said in rejection to the offer. "I'll be taking advice from you over my dead body."

"Attaboy, little buddy." His estranged mentor behind the scenes patronized without changing his hold. "Keep biting the hand that feeds enough times and that can be arranged."
