Ned's fingers tightened on the tabletop, his knuckles turning white from the force. "What did you say?"
Yamamoto put down the teacup and stood up. His movements were slow and composed, like a man who had already finished his game of chess and was waiting for his opponent to admit defeat.
"Let's end today's meeting here," he said. "Consider my conditions. I will fly back to Tokyo tomorrow."
He turned and walked toward the door. When he reached it, he stopped without turning around.
"Mr. Harrington," his voice was very soft, like a leaf falling on the surface of water, "some things, once lost, can never be found again."
The door closed. Only Ned was left in the conference room.
He sat motionless in his chair. Staring at the "Supplementary Terms" Yamamoto had left behind, the words kept echoing in his mind: She's back in London, and she brought three children with her.
"Nate." His voice was hoarse.
The door opened and Nate walked in.
