Daisy did the same on his right. Within moments the two women were curled close against him, arms draped protectively over their sleeping boy, breathing slow and peaceful.
Officer Jenny and Jessie could only watch in silent, wide-eyed terror, their hearts pounding so hard they could hear the blood in their ears.
The same frantic questions spun round and round in their heads:
