Chapter 40 - Chapter 14.1: Maisie

After school that afternoon, Lian packed his schoolbag slowly and walked out of the school gate without any hurry. He had only walked a short distance down the street when he pulled out his phone, ready to send a sweet message to his aunt. Just as his fingers touched the screen, a sharp and angry female voice exploded right next to his ear: "You scumbag!"

Lian turned his head quickly. There stood Maisie, her bright and lively eyes now completely red and swollen from crying so hard.

By this time, Lian had already become very calm about girls his own age. He really didn't care about them much anymore. He tilted his head slightly, gave a small smile, and said, "You followed me all the way here?"

"So what if I followed you?" Maisie's red and puffy eyes were filled with pure fire and anger.

Lian couldn't help but copy the lazy, half-lidded expression his aunt always wore when she was teasing someone. "Okay then, tell me, why exactly did you follow me?"

Maisie clenched both her fists so tight that her knuckles turned white. "I came here to beat you up!"

Lian laughed lightly, not taking it seriously at all. "What big grudge do we even have between us?"

When she heard those words, Maisie froze for a moment, completely stunned.

Lian lowered his voice so only she could hear. "That night, my girlfriend and I were just having sex in the park. What does that have to do with you? How did I ever wrong you? Why are you so angry about it?"

Maisie opened her mouth, but no sound came out at first. Her whole body started trembling a little. Finally she forced the words out through clenched teeth: "Because you cursed at me that night!"

"Isn't that totally normal?" Lian spread his hands like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "You and your boyfriend were doing it right there, and I was just standing nearby with my hands behind my back, watching the whole thing. If it were you, wouldn't you curse at me too?"

Thanks to his aunt's constant influence over the past month, Lian had turned into a real shameless rascal when it came to arguing, and he was quick and clever with his words.

Suddenly, without any warning, Maisie swung her fist hard and hit Lian in the face.

If this had happened just one month ago, that single punch would have knocked him straight to the ground, unconscious.

But after more than a full month of extremely intense physical training, Lian's body had changed completely. The punch only made his head spin and his vision blur for one short second. Then he was perfectly fine again.

Maisie gritted her teeth hard and shouted, "You filthy, disgusting scoundrel! I'm going to beat you to death today!" Her second punch came flying right after, but Lian easily stepped to the side and dodged it without any effort.

The people walking by saw two middle-school students fighting and quickly moved far away, making a big empty circle around them so they had plenty of space.

Lian felt so frustrated he almost wanted to laugh. After taking that first punch, he already had a clear idea of exactly how strong Maisie was.

This girl clearly trained her body a lot and for a long time, so she was way stronger than most girls her age. Still, she was a girl, and her punches simply didn't have enough power behind them. Lian had only been training hard for a little over a month, but his training was super intense and the results were very obvious. Plus, he was a boy, so he had a natural big advantage in raw strength.

So if Lian actually decided to hit back, he would definitely win, and it probably wouldn't even be close.

But Lian really, truly did not want to hit a girl, not even a little.

When he was still very small, his mother had sat him down and told him seriously, "A man who hits a woman is the worst and lowest kind of man in the world." His aunt felt exactly the same way and always said, "I hate men who hit women more than anything else."

Lian clearly remembered that even when his parents used to argue very loudly and very badly, his father never once raised a hand against his mother, no matter how angry he got.

That rule, no hitting women, was carved deep, deep into Lian's heart and soul.

So when Maisie started chasing him down the street, swinging her fists wildly left and right, Lian only blocked the punches that were about to land and kept dodging. He never once threw a punch back.

Maisie hated Lian so much that it was like fire was burning inside her. While chasing him, she didn't pay any attention to where she was stepping or what was around her.

Because of that, when she reached the edge of the sidewalk, she missed the step completely and fell hard onto the ground with a loud thud.

By the time she pushed herself up into a sitting position, Lian had already stopped and was standing right in front of her.

Maisie instantly closed her eyes tight and braced herself, waiting for Lian's punch to come crashing down as revenge.

But even after a long, long time, no punch came. When she finally opened her eyes again, all she saw was Lian running away as fast as he could.

While running, Lian turned his head back and shouted loudly, "It's not because I'm scared of you! And it's definitely not because I can't beat you! I just never hit women, no matter what!"

The crowd of onlookers burst out laughing. Several grown-ups even clapped and called out after Lian's running figure, "Good boy! That kid is a real man!"

Maisie bit her teeth so hard they hurt, staring at Lian's back with pure hate in her eyes. She muttered under her breath, voice full of poison, "I don't believe you won't come to school tomorrow. The second I see you, I'll beat you up every single time!"
