Chapter 94 - Endurance

raaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Amid a crowd of some ten to twenty thousand elating spectators, Jason sat stone-faced amongst them, focusing attentively on the battles taking place below. The stadium prohibited Pokémon from occupying seats and taking up standing room for safety and liability reasons. As a result, Jason had to endure having Ren sit, shift, and periodically bounce atop his lap to allow her to watch the battles alongside him.

'I should invest AP into my Guts or Vitality...' Jason considered seriously, his brow beaded with sweat and the tips of his toes tingling from Ren's weight restricting blood flow to his feet. It didn't help that her body was like a radiator, causing him to sweat as if he had spent the past two hours in a sauna.

"Korrina...!" Ren exclaimed, her ears perking at the mention of Korrina's name by the announcer. The latter's subsequent appearance compelled her to rise to her feet, sending a cooling sensation through Jason's legs as he quickly adjusted his position and that of the dark blue towel he had folded over his thighs.

"I take it the two of you are fans of Gym Leader Korrina...?" asked the person seated to Jason's right, a man in his mid- to late twenties with dark red hair and sharp, red-brown eyes.

"You could say that," Jason answered dismissively, seeing no reason to reveal the truth.

Leaving Jason with a slight frown, the man gestured with his chin at Ren and unabashedly remarked, "Your Lucario has powerful-looking legs and an impressive rump. Do you mind...?"

Seeing the man raise his left hand as if he were about to reach out and cop a feel of Ren's bottom, Jason didn't hesitate to respond, "I do..." in a low, warning tone. He knew the man didn't harbor any ill will or lascivious intent, but there was no way in hell he would be okay with random people touching, much less fondling Ren.

"Okay...?" the man responded, clearly confused as he looked at Jason and retracted his hand, holding it to his body. He didn't understand the reason for the latter's sudden animosity, but it was clear to him that Jason wasn't in the mood to converse.

Though it occurred to him that he had overreacted, Jason didn't offer an apology to the red-haired man. Instead, he placed his hand in the path of Ren's wagging tail, causing her to straighten and cease wagging it before looking back at him in confusion. When she subsequently saw him pat his right thigh, she returned to his lap without question. As she did, Jason felt like he could feel his femurs straining under her weight. But once she was seated far enough back that he could have wrapped his arms around her to keep her in place, the discomfort was largely replaced by the feeling of her body heat pervading his thighs and rapidly spreading to the rest of his body...

As Jason returned to sitting stone-faced in the stands, Korrina, wearing her custom, Lopunny-themed battle attire, struck a pose and shouted, "I hope you prepared well this year, Alain, because my Pokémon and I have been training our butts off...!"

"I wouldn't have it any other way...!" Alain responded, a confident, battle-hungry smile adorning his face as he and Korrina sent their Poké Balls out at the same time. Given her outfit, few were surprised to see Korrina field Laani, who, due to provisions restricting Pokémon to a single obfuscating article or item, wore a steel-grey choker bearing her Lopunite and nothing else. As for Alain, he sent out an extremely beefy-looking Chesnaught, its pale-furred, bipedal body blanketed in sand-brown plating and a rounded, thick, green-trimmed shell bearing six large spines.

"A Grass/Fighting-type, huh? Laani, let's show everyone your Charm...!" Korrina exclaimed, striking a pose and pointing across the field at Alain's Chesnaught.

"Lopun~"

Reacting to Korrina's command, Laani spread her arms and performed a swift pirouette before sticking out her butt, bending forward, and blowing a kiss that produced pink, heart-shaped projectiles like a radiating wave.

"Sweep it away with Poison Job...!" Alain shouted, pumping his right fist as his Chesnaught drew its three-clawed right hand, covered in viscous, dark-purple energy, across its body. Poison-type moves were especially effective against Fairy-types, so as Chesnaught swept his hand through Laani's attack, the Poison-type energy coating it dispersed the sickly pink hearts like smoke.

"Now, use Bulk Up...!" Alain appended, causing his Chesnaught to pull its hands inward toward its body before its already impressive size and bulk noticeably increased.

At the same time that Alain had his Chesnaught bolster its Attack and Defense, Korrina ordered Laani to use Agility, which, within the games, boosted Speed by two stages. In real life, it caused Laani's body to be coated in a faint, magenta-hued Psychic aura.

"Hmph! Boosting the mobility of a famously fast Pokémon? Let's see how well she can dodge! Nautilus, use Pin Missile! Full power...!" ordered Alain, cocking his shoulders and punching at the air.

"Ches...NAAAAAUGHT...!" bellowed Alain's Chesnaught, Nautilus, puffing out its chest and flexing its muscular arms. As it did, the six spikes on its back glowed with a leafy, yellow-green hue before launching like missiles in three waves. The result was eighteen ostensibly heat-seeking missiles, which exploded on contact with the ground.

Demonstrating the versatility of the Psychic-type move, Agility, Laani weaved between the missiles as if invisible strings had been attached to her, contorting her body like a masterfully manipulated marionette, with her feet dangling above the ground as she advanced.

"It looks like our opponents want to Play Rough, Laani! Let's show them that we play even rougher...!" Korrina chimed, beaming from ear to ear as Laani got close enough to Nautilus to envelop both of their bodies in the sickly pink energy that denoted the use of a Fairy-type move.

"Chespi—"

Though it attempted to take a step back and turn around to shield itself with its shell, Nautilus found itself immobilized as Laani, sporting a smile that sent a shiver up its spine, grabbed the white, spiky, beard-like hairs that adorned the lower half of its face. Then, while pulling its head down with surprising force, she began chaining knee after knee directly into the center of its face.

"Nautilus! Iron Defense...!" Alain shouted, his command cutting through Nautilus's confusion, compelling him to activate the Steel-type move, Iron Defense. This significantly boosted its defense, but that wasn't why Alain had ordered its use. Steel-type energy was another counter to Fairy-type energy, causing the pink haze that had enveloped its body to scatter and send out a visible, steel-hued shockwave.

"Try to maintain that distance and tire him out, Laani...!" Korrina shouted, causing the mild annoyance on Laani's face to turn into a look of focused determination. Nautilus was markedly slower than her, so if she used her usual strategy of evading and taking advantage of openings, its defenses would eventually crumble.

"As if we'd make it that easy for you! Nautilus, spread Spikes! Then use Synthesis...!" Alain commanded, prompting Nautius to leap into the air and spin rapidly enough to obscure its features. As it did, glowing, sand-gold, four-pronged spikes that resembled what a Ninja might spread across the ground flew in all directions. Unlike the move Stealth Rock, however, they didn't blend into the ground or disappear.

'Mmn...I may need to swap out...' Korrina thought, her brows creasing, but her eyes retaining their determination. She had fielded Laani so the latter could accumulate experience, but Alain's Chesnaught had years more and was famed for its stalling ability. If it began fighting defensively and using moves like Synthesis to recover its stamina, there was little Laani could do at her current level.

'If only I weren't restricted to one Z-Move or Mega Evolution per match...' Korrina sighed internally, readying Laani's Poké Ball. She could lose up to three matches in the Great Class and still make it into the Ultra Class, but she would much prefer to win.

"Alright, Laani! Return...!" Korrina shouted, causing Laani to startle and evade to the side as the beam of energy that would have returned her to her Poké Ball hit the ground.

"Lowanni...!" Laani cried, stamping her right foot, pushing her clenched fists down, and looking back at Korrina with a defiant pout. The latter's face and ears burned at Laani's unexpected act of rebellion, prompting a round of laughter from the crowd and some playful commentary from the broadcasting desk. However, instead of insisting that Laani return, Korrina nodded, pumped her right fist, and declared, "Alright! If you want to keep going, far be it for me to deny you the opportunity!"

"Lowan...!"

Though it would place Luca in a difficult position, Korrina's eyes blazed alongside Laani's as the latter created some distance from Nautilus and the two began posing together. Alain immediately recognized what they had planned, but Nautilus's limited mobility left him with few options. It was against the rules to swap Pokémon to evade an imminent attack, so his only options were to have Nautilus endure the attack in his base form or increase his defense even further via Mega Evolution.

Fortunately for Korrina and Laani, Alain had entered the battle with the intention of saving his Mega Evolution for his partner, Rizaidon. As such, Nautilus was left at the mercy of fate as Korrina and Laani finished their posing, the former shouting, "Strike forward with dazzling grace! Twinkle Tackle...!"

Empowered by Korrina's Fairium-Z, Laani charged forward with the fluff adorning her ears, wrists, lower legs, and eyebrows tinted with rainbow-hued energy. From the perspective of the crowd, her entire body became veiled in that light, causing her to resemble a rainbow-hued meteor that slammed into Nautilus within the blink of an eye before sending the latter flying backward and skipping like a flat rock across water. Unfortunately, its dual Grass/Fighting-type made it susceptible to Fairy-type moves, so after crashing explosively into the walls encircling the battlefield, it hung limply in place by its spines.

"The power of Z-Moves never ceases to impress..." Alain muttered, his brows furrowing and his dark blue eyes gaining a hint of ghostly blue as he returned the unconscious Nautilus to its Poké Ball and produced the one containing his Ace and partner.

"Our opponent is weakened! Let's wrap this up, Rizaidon...!"

"GRRAAAAAAAAOW...!"

After being freed from its Poké Ball, Alain's Charizard, Rizaidon, released a loud, throaty cry that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Thanks to Trainers like Alain and the reigning World Champion, Leon, the popularity of Charizard was the highest it had ever been. Alain's looked especially striking, with a flame-tipped tail, a silver-and-black Mega Stone harness, and numerous scars adorning its battle-tempered, scale-covered orange body. So, even though Korrina was ahead in their match, the momentum returned to Alain in the blink of an eye.

"Laani! Snap out of it and use Charm...!" Korrina shouted, freeing Laani from the confused daze she had fallen into at the crowd's reaction. She had expected them to cheer for and applaud her for putting her all into her last attack, so their sudden eruption at Rizaidon's appearance left her feeling disjointed and slightly hurt. Their reaction suggested they wanted her to lose, causing her brows to crease and a pouty glower to adorn her face as she charged forward and slammed a Mach Punch into Rizaidon's round, boulder-like belly.

With its dual Fire/Flying typing, moves empowered by Fighting-type energy had little effect on Rizaidon. As a Pokémon, Charizard wasn't particularly known for its defense. But as Laani's comparably tiny fist impacted Rizaidon's stomach, the nearly three-meter-tall winged lizard didn't so much as flinch.

As it dawned upon Laani that she had made a grave mistake, the voice of Alain cut through her gradually freezing world, exclaiming, "Rizaidon! Use Dragon Claw...!"

"Grao..."

While holding Laani's gaze, Rizaidon spread its three-clawed hands out to its sides and generated gleaming, amethyst-purple blades from their tips. Laani instinctively took a step back and attempted to take evasive action, but despite their size, Charizard were famed for their speed and dexterity. Thus, midway through Laani turning and digging the nails of her right foot into the soil for traction, Rizaidon's claws slashed tangentially through her body, forcing her eyes to roll back as the sudden and intense pain robbed her of her consciousness...
