Hailey walked over to where her phone was charging against the wall. She picked it up with trembling hands.
"Please tell me you're not about to do something we're all going to regret," Emma said, noticing Hailey's expression.
"Define regret," Hailey replied, staring at her phone.
"Calling someone who clearly doesn't want to talk to you," Clara said pointedly.
"How do you know that's what I'm doing?" Hailey asked defensively.
"Because we've all been there," Melanie said softly. "The desperate phone call phase of heartbreak is universal."
Her thumb hovered over Eric's contact information for a long moment. Her heart raced in her chest.
"Don't do it," Sarah called out. "Whatever you're thinking, don't."
"It's not that bad of an idea," Hailey protested weakly.
"It's a terrible idea," Jessica said firmly. "Trust us on this one."
"But what if he picks up?" Hailey asked hopefully.
"And what if he doesn't?" Emma countered. "Then you'll feel even worse."
