Chapter 65 - The Echo in the Mud

The Drowned World, Present Day

Enki gasped, the visions of the past releasing him. He was back on the hill, the mud sucking at his boots. The weight of the memories was crushing. He hadn't been an innocent victim. He had been a participant in the Great Sterility. His Crown was a punishment that fit his crime.

Gilgamesh was staring at him. "You cried out. What did you see?"

"I saw… why the world ended," Enki whispered, his voice raw. "It wasn't murdered. It committed suicide. We were all holding the knife."

He looked at his hands—the hands that had preferred to archive a tree rather than plant one. The message of the story was not just for an ancient, dead civilization. It was for him. It was for now.

STOP.

The story screamed at him from across the millennia.

STOP RECORDING. STOP WITNESSING. START LIVING.
