Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Contract

"The price will rise even more?" Leo covered his face with his palm and laughed. "Ha, hahaha."

Kayla grew a little optimistic after seeing Leo laugh. However, she also found his laughter a little strange. She just couldn't put a finger on what was wrong.

She didn't know that Leo wasn't laughing in happiness. He was simply laughing in disbelief.

Was this world even real? Or had he transmigrated to some weird world where logic was twisted to this extent? They were going to pay a billion for a few bottles of lemon juice? Was making money this easy?

For months, he had been moving from one door to another, trying to find a job that would pay him a few thousand credits a month. However, even finding them was almost impossible. Heck, he was even rejected for a janitor's job.

At those moments, earning money seemed like a task harder than climbing the tallest mountain in the world. That's why he was so happy when he received a system that gave him money when he lost more of it?

Now that he had that system, he just had to lose money like he normally did. But now, out of nowhere, he started earning money? Not just money, but filthy amounts of money?

Kayla, trying to strike a hammer while the iron was not, quickly brought out a contract. "Mr Leo, our guild would like to make you an offer. We would like you to work exclusively for us. I promise you, you'll be able to earn even more than I just stated. The Guild would never cheat you."

She further continued, "Not only that, we would also provide you the best of equipment at our Headquarters. You will also be able to shift to the HQ, and live in the safest place in the world."

As if trying to win him at any condition, she wasn't stingy with the offers. "We will also assign an S-Rank Hero for your protection. No other organisation can offer conditions like ours."

"Also, if you come up with other elixirs, we can even modify the contract terms. Not just on earth, but you would become famous across the galaxy. It would only be a matter of time before you're nominated for the Galactic Council."

She held the contract firmly, waiting for Leo to stop laughing.

Leo's laughter had come to a half when he heard the contract terms. Who wouldn't mind the personal guards and living in the most secure place in the world?

He lived in a place that could only be described as a ghetto. Just one accident and he would die in his sleep without even realising what struck him. So the contract terms were really good.

He had only seen S-Rank Heroes in news articles and advertisements. And one was being offered to him as a personal guard? Just how seriously did the guild take his little lemon juice recipe?

Did they seriously not know that it was just lemon juice? Did they really have some grand misunderstanding? The more Leo thought about it, the more it started to make sense.

If they knew the truth, why would they offer him such terms? Why would they come here for him? So they really didn't know that the recipe for this so-called elixir was so simple.

Leo didn't even want to think about what would happen if they found out the truth. No matter what, for his own safety, he had to take this recipe to his grave and never let the guild know about it.

As long as he was careful, he could protect himself. But there was still one small problem... He freaking wanted to be poor as heck! Why were they offering him more money?

At this rate, wouldn't he never lose money in his lifetime? What was the point of living in someone else's house and owning a wealthy company if he couldn't even use a single credit on his own?

"Should I reject the contract? No, I absolutely cannot do that. What if they tried to reverse engineer the recipe or torture me after I refuse to sign the contract? Moreover, I do need a safe place to live. If I go there, maybe they would be kind enough to offer me free food?'

Leo took a deep breath, and took Kayla's glass slab that was showing the contract on a holographic screen.

"I would sign the contract, but I'm not satisfied with the terms. I want some changes," he said as he started changing some things in the contract.

Even though Kayla used a more advanced device, the basics were still the same, allowing Leo to make changes to an unsigned contract.

"You want to change terms?" Kayla mumbled, feeling her heart sink. She had already offered the best conditions, even beyond what the Guild normally offered. And he wanted more? Was he really that greedy?

If he wanted to increase the remuneration and signing fee, could they really pay more? If it was only a little increase, she could probably cut the budget of other things and accommodate Leo. But what if it was more?

A heavy frown spread across her face, but she maintained her silence for now.

Soon, Leo finished the changes and returned the glass device to Kayla.

Kayla started going through the changes, her worries visible all over her face.

"Hmm?" Her expressions soon changed. With each passing second, her face became even more incredulous. It was a sight worth seeing.

"Is this really what you want?" she asked Leo in disbelief.

"That's right. Those are my conditions. If you don't agree with them, I won't sign the contract. In that case, you can see yourselves out."

Leo was firm on his stance, almost forgetting that she was standing before the people who could crush him between their thumb and their middle finger if they wanted.

Since they already misunderstood him as a genius, then how could he show his weakness? For not, he had to maintain this persona. There was no point in worrying about the future.
