The sound of steel carving rock stopped.
The silence that fell over the clearing was heavier and deeper than any Seiko had experienced. It was a silence pregnant with meaning.
Acies sheathed his blade-claw with a soft click and stepped back from the wall, his red eyes fixed on the word he had engraved: ARCEUS. The letters were angular, precise, and terrifying in their permanence.
Tyla let out the breath she didn't know she was holding. Her knuckles were white from the force with which she clutched the piece of charcoal.
But it was Iris who moved first.
The Wise Woman, the woman whose power lay in breath and memory, approached the rock wall as if in a trance. Her trembling, herb-stained fingers grazed the grooves in the stone. She traced the shape of the 'A', the 'R', the 'C'.
"It is..." she whispered, her voice broken by emotion. "It is true. My mother told me... and her mother to her... but now..."
She looked up, her eyes meeting Seiko's. The fear was gone. The distrust had evaporated. In its place, there was raw, overwhelming awe.
"You have made it real," she said. "You have taken the breath of my ancestors and given it stone."
Seiko felt a shiver that had nothing to do with the mountain wind. He had seen engineering as a means to an end: efficiency, survival, organization. He had seen writing as the next logical step.
'Idiot,' he thought to himself. 'I have been building a factory when they needed a cathedral to venerate their Great God, the God of All.'
He had overlooked the most fundamental component of a civilization: faith. Not blind faith, but faith in a shared purpose. He had been so focused on the how (the charcoal, the iron, the alphabet) that he had ignored the why.
Iris had given it to him. And Acies, in an act of instinctive devotion, had carved it in his face.
"No, Iris," said Seiko softly. "You made it real. I only brought the hammer. You brought the word."
He turned to Tyla. The young hunter no longer looked at the letters with frustration. She looked at them with reverence.
"Ore plus fire equals iron," quoted Tyla, her voice barely audible. "Arceus plus Dream equals Creation. It is... it is the same lesson. It is the same process."
Seiko's mind raced. 'The same lesson.'
'Oh, by all the Gods. She is right.'
He saw the path clear before him. The religion he wanted to found... was already here. He didn't need to invent it. He only needed to reveal it.
The creation of iron from rock wasn't just science; it was an allegory for Arceus's Creation. Work, process, patience... that was the form of worship.
His Abrahamic faith, centered (centred) on creation and life, fit perfectly. The story of the Celestica wasn't a myth; it was their Genesis.
"The one of Knowledge..." said Seiko, tasting the words. "And the one of Iron. They are the same, Tyla. The same act of faith. We take dead earth, ore, and give it purpose. We give it life as iron. We take dead breath, history, and give it life as writing."
"Work is worship," murmured Iris, her eyes wide. "The sweat of the forge... the pain of the mine... Is it a prayer?"
"It is the most honest prayer there is," confirmed Seiko. "Arceus created the world by working. We honor (honour) him by doing the same. Building. Creating. Not just surviving."
He turned to the wall. The name of ARCEUS was carved, but the rest of Iris's story was in temporary charcoal, and next week's rain would erase it all.
"This is not enough," declared Seiko. "A name is not the story. And the story does not deserve charcoal."
He pointed to the empty space next to the carved word. "This wall. It is no longer a cliff face. It is the Wall of Memory. We are going to carve every word you just told me, Iris. From the Great Creator to the flight from Hisui. The Knowledge must be written in stone, so that no winter can erase it."
Tyla and Iris stared at him.
"But..." stammered Tyla, "How? Acies's claw is... well, it's Acies. We only have... charcoal."
"We have more than that," said Seiko. A slow smile, the true smile of an engineer who has just found a worthy problem, spread across his face. "We have a bloomery furnace. We have hammers. And we have an iron sponge waiting to be worked."
He turned and headed back to the heart of the camp, where the main forge was cold. Iris and Tyla followed him, with Acies flanking them.
Kael was there, inspecting the edge of his spear with disapproval, as if he could intimidate it into sharpening itself. He looked up when the trio approached. He noticed the change in atmosphere immediately.
"What's wrong?" asked Kael, going on guard. "Bandits?"
"Something new," said Seiko. He stopped in front of the warrior. "Kael. Do you trust iron?"
Kael frowned. "It saved my life. It is stronger than any stone. Why?"
"Do you trust the Wise Woman's story?"
Kael looked at Iris. "It is the story of our blood. Of course."
"Good," said Seiko. "Because today, those two become one. And you are going to help build it."
Seiko picked up Tyla's hammer from the anvil. "Today we make no more spears."
Kael looked betrayed. "But, Seiko, the patrols..."
"The patrols can wait," interrupted Seiko, his voice resonating with a new authority. He wasn't the pragmatic foreman; he was the Prophet-Engineer. "Iron has a higher purpose than war. It has to serve knowledge. We are going to make chisels."
Kael blinked. "Chis-what?"
"Iron teeth," explained Seiko. "Fine, hard tools, designed not to cut flesh, but to bite stone. We are going to make tools for writing."
Kael was completely lost. He looked at Iris for help.
Iris stepped forward, her voice clear and firm, no longer the frightened Wise Woman from the morning, but the first cleric of this new faith.
"Kael," she said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Seiko has given us weapons to protect our bodies."
She pointed toward the cliff, where the word ARCEUS shone faintly in the sun.
"Now, he has given us a way to protect our soul."
[A/N: I took a few days off for some rest and vacation, so sorry for not updating. I'll be posting more chapters right now. Since I've been away for several days, I'll be uploading 11 chapters in a row this time. But on Patreon, I'll keep the usual 10 chapter advance, just like I originally planned. You're all welcome to check it out. I hope you have a wonderful day, afternoon, or night. patreon.com/Nemryz]
