Chapter 13 - Training the Lucky Star

Morning sunlight spilled across the Wild Area in soft golden beams, reflecting off the glimmering grass and distant riverbanks. The air smelled faintly of wild mint and dew, alive with the distant calls of Pokémon. Niyah stretched her arms and yawned, her scarf fluttering in the gentle breeze.

"Alright, team," she said, her eyes bright. "Time to see what our newest member can really do!"

Togepi hopped in front of her, cheeks puffed out with determination. Mimikyu and Litwick hovered behind, acting as unofficial referees or maybe just a mischievous audience, who knew for sure.

Roty floated to Niyah's side, its screen flickering with text.

[Training Sub-Objective: Enhance Serene Grace]

Target: 100% Secondary Effect Activation Success Rate.

"Let's make it happen," Niyah said, eyes scanning the field. A patch of grass rustled nearby and a small, grey Bunnelby hopped out, twitching its long ears. It looked up at Togepi, then at Niyah, sizing them up.

Togepi squeaked defiantly, planting her little feet.

"Wild opponent detected," Roty buzzed. "Bunnelby - Level 21. Known for speed and digging maneuvers. Noted: Normal type. Advantage: Neutral."

"Perfect warm-up," Niyah grinned. "Alright, Iris, open with Extrasensory!"

The air shimmered around Togepi as psychic energy gathered, a soft pink aura radiating outward like sunlight refracted through a prism. Bunnelby darted forward with Quick Attack, but Togepi's eyes flashed, and the psychic wave rippled out before it could land the blow.

The wild Pokémon froze mid-motion, dazed as Serene Grace kicked in, a good 60% chance flinch became guaranteed.

Roty beeped in satisfaction. "Btzz, btzz… Secondary effect achieved. Serene Grace functionality: 100% in single activation window."

"Nice!" Niyah cheered. "Now chain it with Metronome!"

Togepi clapped her tiny hands, a swirl of multicolored light forming around her. Niyah's heart pounded; she remembered how Togepi could choose the move, not leave it to chance. She just hoped Iris would choose good.

The light solidified into an unmistakable shimmer of ice. "Ice Beam!" Niyah realized a split second before Togepi launched it.

A crystal-blue beam shot forth, striking Bunnelby squarely on the chest, frost creeping across its fur. Freeze chance?

Triggered.

"Frozen solid!" Roty announced. "Serene Grace doubles effect rate, 100% success!"

Bunnelby squeaked helplessly, unable to move. Togepi grinned wickedly, spinning in place like a dancer before firing another Extrasensory that sent the frozen Pokémon tumbling backward into the grass.

A flash of white light, Bunnelby fainted.

Niyah pumped her fist. "Beautiful! Two for two on effect triggers."

Mimikyu clapped silently, while Litwick twirled, releasing a small celebratory flame burst. Togepi strutted back proudly, holding her head high, though she quickly tripped over her own foot and landed on her back.

Niyah laughed and picked her up. "Don't let it go to your head, little troublemaker. You did amazing."

Roty hummed approvingly. "Btzz, btzz… Serene Grace mastery: 60% progress achieved. Further tests recommended for chain consistency."

Togepi chirped proudly, flapping her stubby arms. She had learned the rhythm of her ability, the way her energy could coax the world into bending slightly in her favor. Every flicker of joy, every playful giggle, seemed to make the ability pulse brighter.

"Alright," Niyah said with a smirk, brushing her hands together. "That's one win down. Let's find someone a little tougher for round two."

Mimikyu and Litwick exchanged mischievous looks, both ready to stir up the next "training opportunity."

And as it turned out, they wouldn't have to look far.

By midday, the Wild Area's open plains shimmered with heat, dotted by trainers and their Pokémon in friendly battles. Niyah and her team had set up near a ridge overlooking the lake, a spot perfect for mischief and training.

Roty hovered close by, monitoring energy readings.

Training Log Updated:

Trainee: Togepi

Objective: Reinforce Serene Grace through sustained combat

Opponent type: Ideal, trickster-type Pokémon

"Trickster-type?" Niyah muttered. "You mean like Dark-types?"

"Btzz, btzz… yes. Nickit detected," Roty confirmed, rotating its lens toward a boy practicing nearby. His Nickit, sleek and sly, was swiping snacks from his bag when he wasn't looking.

"Perfect," Niyah said, grinning. "Let's ask for a battle."

She approached with her usual bounce. "Hey! Wanna test your Nickit against my Togepi?"

The boy turned, blinking. "You sure? My Nickit's a sneaky one."

"So is mine," Niyah winked.

The match was on.

The two Pokémon faced each other in the open field. Nickit's crimson fur gleamed under the sun, tail swishing smugly. Togepi, meanwhile, stood with arms crossed and an expression that screamed bring it.

"Battle begin!" the boy called. "Nickit, Quick Attack!"

The fox blurred forward, a streak of red and dust.

"Iris, Metronome!" Niyah commanded.

Tiny hands glowed, a swirl of light spun around Togepi before bursting outward as she declared, 'Flamethrower!'

A roaring blast of heat exploded in front of her. Nickit yelped, trying to veer away mid-attack but the flames licked its tail, and Serene Grace pulsed through Togepi's aura like a heartbeat.

"Burn status confirmed," Roty buzzed.

Nickit spun in pain, smoke curling from its tail.

"Woah!" the boy gasped. "That was a strong Metronome attack?"

Niyah smiled, one hand on her hip. "Trade secret."

Nickit growled, fur bristling. "Alright, Nickit! Beat Up!"

Dark energy erupted around the fox, striking repeatedly, a flurry of shadow-infused blows. Togepi staggered slightly, grit her teeth, and her body flashed bright pink in defiance.

"Use Morning Sun!" Niyah ordered.

Togepi raised her hands to the sky; sunlight poured over her like liquid gold. The energy shimmered, magnified by her Serene Grace, the healing normally restoring half her energy now fully restored her health in one radiant surge.

Nickit blinked, stunned.

"Btzz, btzz, Serene Grace… amplifies restorative effects as well," Roty narrated. "Health regeneration efficiency: 200%."

Togepi twirled once, smug, before launching another Extrasensory attack that sent Nickit tumbling across the grass. The attack itself didn't do any damage but the force was still strong enough to knock the other Pokémon back.

But Nickit wasn't done. It smirked, eyes gleaming, and used Tail Whip, followed by another Beat Up, a smart combo meant to lower defense before striking hard.

Togepi took the hits and glowed faintly again. "Now, Metronome!"

She twirled, energy gathering and the light burst into dazzling violet. 'Dazzling Gleam!'

The light was blinding; the crowd of nearby trainers gasped as Nickit was engulfed by a wave of fairy brilliance. When the light faded, the Dark-type lay on the ground, fainted but sparkling faintly with glitter dust.

Togepi hopped in a little victory dance, twirling her arms with glee.

The boy rubbed the back of his neck. "She's scary good… and kinda adorable."

"Thanks!" Niyah said, crouching to pat Togepi. "We've been working on her Serene Grace. It's like… fate's on her side when she fights."

Togepi chirped proudly, puffing her chest.

Roty's lens flickered.

Training Log:

Serene Grace consistency, 85%

Secondary effects activated: 5/6 total

Boost synergy detected: Healing amplification confirmed

"Btzz, bzzt, almost at full mastery," Roty announced.

"Then we keep going," Niyah said, standing and cracking her knuckles. "We've still got sunlight and plenty of Pokémon left to battle. Let's see what else Iris can do."

Litwick giggled in ghostly tones while Mimikyu shuffled ahead, scouting for their next target.

They didn't have to look far the next opponent had already found them.

By the time afternoon shadows began to stretch long and gold, the air shimmered with the lingering warmth of the Wild Area's midday sun. Niyah wiped her forehead and looked around the open field. Wild Pokémon had gathered in distant clusters, some wary, some curious. Her team stood at ease, recovering between bouts of play and training.

"Okay, team," Niyah said, clapping her hands. "We've worked on tricks, speed, control… but now it's time to see how our little star handles the heat."

Togepi tilted her head, chirping confidently, 'Bring it on.'

Roty's eye gleamed. "Bzzt, bzzt, incoming wild Pokémon, detected Fire-type. Energy signature: Vulpix. Threat level: moderate. Perfect for testing heat resistance."

Sure enough, a dainty Vulpix trotted onto the field from behind a patch of tall grass, its six orange tails flowing like flames. It tilted its head at Togepi, curious and smug in equal measure.

"Looks like we've got a volunteer," Niyah said, grinning. "Alright, Iris, this is a test of endurance no tricks this time. You're going to take the heat, stay standing, and make the sunlight your best friend. Got it?"

Togepi chirped again and waddled forward, ready.

The Vulpix crouched low, eyes narrowing.

The battle began.

"Ember!" Niyah called first, deliberately giving her opponent the chance to react.

The Vulpix's ears perked, misreading the command as a challenge. It smirked, inhaled, and spat a swirling ball of flame. The air rippled as the fireball streaked toward Togepi.

"Now, Morning Sun!" Niyah shouted.

Light exploded around Togepi in a golden shield just as the Ember struck. The flames hissed and flared but instead of being singed, Togepi seemed to absorb the warmth pouring down from above. The energy mixed with the impact, nullifying the burn entirely.

"Bzzt, bzzt, energy conversion detected," Roty announced. "Morning Sun efficiency boosted by ambient heat. Healing output increased 150%."

Niyah grinned. "The hotter it gets, the stronger she heals. Good to know."

Vulpix blinked in surprise, then barked sharply. It dashed forward in a spiral, flames circling its paws as it used Flame Wheel. Fire streaked in bright orange rings, faster, tighter, stronger.

"Iris, Extrasensory!"

Togepi raised her tiny hands; her eyes glowed violet. Psychic waves radiated outward, rippling the grass. Vulpix's charge faltered mid-step, its paws skidding as invisible force pressed against it. The air hummed, Serene Grace flaring again, and the Fire-type was suddenly frozen in place by the flinching aftershock, flames sputtering in puffs of smoke.

Niyah nodded approvingly. "Good control. Keep that up!"

Vulpix shook off the psychic daze, snarling now. The Wild Area breeze shifted, carrying the scent of burning grass as it summoned another Flame Wheel, charging again.

This time, Niyah didn't order a counterattack. Instead, she smirked. "Let it hit."

Litwick and Mimikyu blinked from the sidelines, even Roty hesitated mid-record.

"Analyzing tactical reasoning…"

"Trust me," Niyah said quietly, watching closely.

The Vulpix slammed into Togepi, heat rippling across the field. The impact sent the little Fairy-type rolling back through the grass but when she stopped, her body shone faintly gold again.

"Now, Morning Sun!"

Once more, sunlight poured down. Togepi stood, eyes shut, basking in the glow. The burns faded, the scuffs disappeared, and when her eyes opened again, she was smiling. Her Serene Grace pulsed visibly this time, a delicate aura of warmth around her.

"Bttz, bzzt, training objective complete," Roty reported. "Sustained burn and damage negated through amplified healing. Serene Grace activation: 100% success rate."

But the battle wasn't over.

Vulpix, panting now, refused to yield. It barked sharply and released a Will-O-Wisp, blue flames swirling like phantoms. They circled Togepi, shimmering dangerously close.

"Alright, Iris," Niyah said softly. "Show her what you've learned from your big brother Litwick."

Togepi giggled mischievously, then twirled once and cast Metronome. The energy built quickly. so quickly it startled even Niyah, and with a spark of determination, Togepi declared: 'Scald!'

A jet of boiling water erupted from her small body, colliding with the ghostly flames and hissing them out in an instant. Steam filled the field, shimmering with sunlight.

Vulpix cried out in shock, its body drenched and sizzling, steam rising from its fur. Then, as the air cleared, its eyes rolled in defeat. The Fire-type toppled gently into the grass, fainted but mostly unharmed.

Niyah grinned. "Beautifully done, Iris."

Togepi hopped happily, spinning around to face her teammates. Mimikyu clapped silently with its tiny shadow hands, while Litwick giggled, his flame flickering in approval.

Roty hovered closer, scanning.

Training Log Update:

Ability: Serene Grace (Mastered).

Skill synergy: Morning Sun + Fire resistance complete.

New affinity unlocked: Environmental Harmony, natural sunlight enhances move power and healing when outdoors.

"Well, that's three tests passed," Niyah said, hands on her hips. "One left to go, right Roty?"

"Bttz, bzzt, correct. One remaining objective: synergy battle, multiple opponent endurance test."

Niyah's grin widened. "Perfect. We'll make it a group challenge, then."

The sky over the Wild Area had softened to gold, painted with strokes of rose and amber. Wind brushed through the long grass, carrying the earthy scent of the day's battles. Niyah stood in the middle of a wide clearing, her three Pokémon gathered around her. Litwick's flame flickering like a small lantern, Mimikyu's shadow gently swaying, and Togepi, still glowing faintly from her last victory.

"All right, team," Niyah began, brushing her hands together, "we've trained hard, but it's time for one last test. No tricks, no holding back. Iris' going to take on two opponents at once."

Togepi chirped, her tiny voice brimming with excitement instead of fear.

Litwick's flame danced in amusement. 'Good luck newbie"

Mimikyu tilted her head, silently rooting for her new teammate.

Roty hovered above them, scanning the area. "Bttz, bzzt, locating suitable opponents… Target species detected. Wild Mudbray and Rookidee nearby. Power levels moderate. Engaging may result in fatigue risk."

"Perfect." Niyah's smirk widened. "This'll test everything she's learned, power, healing, timing, and control. Let's make it count."

Minutes later, two Pokémon appeared from opposite sides of the clearing.

On the left, a Mudbray stomped its hooves into the soil, braying loudly as clods of dirt flew. On the right, a Rookidee fluttered in, wings slicing the air like little blades. They looked around, both locking eyes on Togepi in the middle.

The small Fairy-type looked back, unbothered. Then, with a chirp, she spun her stubby arms in a taunting little wave 'come and get me.'

"Two on one," Niyah said, her tone even but her grin unmistakable. "Let's go, Iris. Use Extrasensory!"

Togepi's eyes flared violet. Psychic energy rippled out in a precise wave but Rookidee darted upward, narrowly avoiding the pulse. Mudbray, unaffected, charged forward with Stomp, its hooves crashing down where Togepi had been just moments earlier.

"Roll left!" Niyah ordered. Togepi tucked and rolled, a surprisingly quick maneuver, just as the ground cracked from the Mudbray's strike.

"Now hit it again, Extrasensory!"

The second pulse connected, shimmering through the air and slamming into Mudbray's chest. The donkey Pokémon staggered back, grunting. eyes glazing as the Serene Grace kicked in. Flinch! It froze in place, unable to move.

Rookidee screeched and dove from above, feathers glowing with energy, Pluck!

"Iris, Ancient Power!"

Rocks rose from the ground around Togepi, spinning like a mini meteor storm. She thrust her arms upward, and the stones shot through the air, colliding with Rookidee mid-dive. The Flying-type spiraled upward, feathers scattering, but caught itself midair, glaring furiously.

"Bzzt, bzzt, Mudbray's shaking it off," Roty warned.

Indeed, the Ground-type neighed, charging again. This time its hooves glowed with earthen energy, Bulldoze. It slammed into the ground, sending a shockwave across the field.

Togepi stumbled, tripping over her own feet as the dirt surged beneath her.

"Hold steady!" Niyah yelled. "Now, Morning Sun!"

Togepi's body glowed gold, the radiance spreading across the field like ripples on water. The damage melted away, and even the loose dirt seemed to settle at the brilliance of her healing light. The crowd of distant wild Pokémon, curious spectators to this intense battle, seemed to pause in awe.

Mudbray brayed, furious, and prepared another charge but Togepi's glow only intensified. Her Serene Grace shimmered brighter than ever, bending the light around her.

"Roty, readings?" Niyah asked, eyes narrowing.

"Bttz, bzzt, energy output rising exponentially. Serene Grace fully synchronized with environmental light. Secondary effects probability: 100%."

Niyah grinned. "Perfect. Iris hit em with Metronome! Let's make it count!"

The Fairy-type wiggled her fingers, her aura pulsing rhythmically. The energy spiraled faster and faster, until suddenly, her eyes flashed sky-blue.

'Scald!' she cried, again choosing her own destiny.

A torrent of boiling water erupted from her hands, blasting forward in a pressurized wave. It collided with Mudbray head-on steam exploding from the contact. The Ground-type shrieked, stumbling backward and toppling onto its side. When the mist cleared, a faint burn mark steamed on its flank.

"Beautiful burn chance," Niyah said proudly. "And look who's still up."

Above, Rookidee flapped hard, its feathers slicked with moisture. It dove again, wings charged with a metallic gleam, Steel Wing.

Togepi looked up, her tiny face serious. 'Bring…it…'

Then, without waiting for Niyah's command, she twirled again, her glow pulsing wild and bright.

'Metronome!'

This time, the energy burst out in a flare of light that drew gasps from every nearby Pokémon. Rookidee's shadow passed through the glow and suddenly, Togepi uttered a single word: 'Thunderbolt!'

A blinding bolt of lightning split the sky, striking Rookidee dead center. The air cracked, feathers scattering like embers. The bird froze midair, stunned, shocked, and then gently spiraled downward before landing softly beside the fainted Mudbray.

Silence hung for a moment.

Then Roty beeped, breaking it:

"Bttz, bzzt, double opponent defeated. Damage sustained: minimal. Healing efficiency: 98%. Battle conclusion, overwhelming success."

Niyah stepped forward slowly, kneeling beside Togepi. "You just used two super-effective moves in one battle," she said softly, pride in her voice. "And you didn't even need luck to make them hit."

Togepi giggled, spinning happily as light rippled off her form.

Mimikyu crept over and patted her on the head, shadow arms wrapping in a gentle little hug. Litwick floated nearby, his flame pulsing a cool blue, the closest thing to a smile his little candle face could make.

Niyah stood, stretching her arms with a satisfied sigh. "All right, that's it. Training complete. Serene Grace is mastered, your endurance is solid, and now we've got a Fairy-type powerhouse who can fry a Flying-type out of the sky."

Roty hovered down beside her. "Bzzt, bzzt, data log saved. Togepi's battle performance exceeds predicted values. Personality synchronization with team complete."

Niyah grinned. "Told you she was perfect for us."

As the sun began to set over the Wild Area, she watched her team gather together. Togepi sitting between Mimikyu and Litwick, giggling softly while the three playfully nudged at one another. The soft orange sky shimmered above them, streaked with drifting clouds and the first signs of twilight.

"Tomorrow," Niyah said, smiling faintly, "we'll start thinking about what's next. But tonight… we celebrate."

Litwick's flame brightened, Mimikyu's ragged shadow swayed, and Togepi clapped her tiny hands, humming happily as the light faded from the world.

Her little Trickster Family had never looked stronger.
