Chapter 41 - Cawl

"No."

Augustus' expression remained unchanged.

"I've investigated for you. Namakor's life is completely normal."

Saying that, Augustus handed a file to Alexander.

Alexander opened the file and saw that its contents detailed the life of Namakor.

"Namakor's husband was a minor manager at an asteroid mining company in the Netherworld Star System."

"Decades ago, a group of marauding Green-skinned Orcs attacked the Netherworld Star System. The asteroid belt was among the first to be hit."

"Namakor's husband was there, demonstrated his loyalty to the Emperor, and died for it."

Augustus said in a calm tone.

Taking advantage of his pause, Alexander looked at the file in his hand.

Indeed, Namakor's husband died during the Green-skinned Orc invasion of the asteroid belt.

He organized workers to fight against the Green-skinned Orcs and died in the process.

Namakor was deeply respected in the vicinity because of this.

"After that, Namakor lived a life of going back and forth between work and home, occasionally teaching mathematics to the children nearby."

"Her only two hobbies were teaching and mathematics. There has never been any sign of corruption in her life."

"When this church under your feet was built, she even donated money."

"This is the original receipt."

Augustus pointed to a receipt in the file.

This receipt showed that Namakor did indeed donate to the church.

The donation amount was six thousand five hundred and sixty-one blood coins, almost all of Namakor's savings.

It seemed that Namakor was indeed a devout Adeptus Ministorum, and her only interests were quite harmless.

The only drawback was that she came to pray relatively less often.

She had only visited this small church to pray one hundred and fifty-three times in the past four years.

But she had still come to pray at this small church seven days ago.

Everything seemed normal.

The only problem was...

Alexander calculated the number of times she had come to pray.

153. The sum of the three digits was exactly nine.

But Alexander did not voice this suspicion.

Because it sounded a bit too far-fetched.

Was he really being overly suspicious? Something was wrong, nine out of ten things were wrong.

"Don't worry, if corruption truly appears, I wouldn't mind directly bombing the entire Ninth District."

Augustus comforted him:

"There's always a way to stop the spread of corruption."

Alexander frowned.

The Ninth District was the only passage for many large districts in the Lower Nest to enter the Upper hive. If it were bombed,

The cost of material transportation in the Lower Nest would skyrocket, and the prices of food and various daily necessities would inevitably increase.

Deaths would be inevitable.

It might even escalate into riots and rebellions.

"Let the people of the Lower Nest suffer a bit, and I'll suppress the riots." Augustus said in a deep voice.

"This bastard," Alexander shook his head.

All problems could be averted by simply killing Namakor now.

Although Namakor did seem innocent.

"Namakor is a devout Adeptus Ministorum, and her husband died for the Emperor. If there's no definite evidence, and I use PDF forces to kill her..."

"..some people might question my loyalty."

Augustus noticed Alexander's gaze, shook his head, and told the truth.

"And your loyalty can't withstand scrutiny at all," Alexander shrugged.

Augustus, this guy, had previously wanted to find Ignes. Kalkas' notebook.

That notebook recorded the corruption incantations on the Davine planet.

Alexander highly suspected that Augustus intended to use the corruption knowledge from it as a final insurance.

If the Hellworm truly came before him, he would drag the entire Ashford Star into Chaos with him.

"Yes, so the PDF cannot be used by you."

"If we have to kill, it must be done secretly, without anyone finding out."

At this point, Augustus smiled:

"And it's not just me; your loyalty can't withstand scrutiny either."

"You're associating with an illegal psyker."

Hearing this, Alexander smiled:

"I'm just raising a fool."

"Not like you, governor, raising a group of illegal psyker private soldiers who escaped from the Black Ships."

"Governor, you wouldn't want the Inquisition to discover your practice of keeping illegal psyker, would you?"

Augustus' previously calm expression instantly stiffened.

"How did you know?" Augustus' voice contained a hint of barely perceptible shock.

Those illegal psyker were hidden by Augustus in his secret underground palace.

The entire palace was managed by servitors, making any leakage impossible.

Alexander just gave Augustus a brilliant smile.

"..I underestimated you."

Augustus had to admit:

"Let's talk about cooperation. Lardben told me you need money, and I can give it to you."

"But I need you to go to the Bottom Nest."

Hearing this, the corner of Alexander's eye twitched slightly.

Why the Bottom Nest again?

"Although I have informants in the Lower Nest, I don't have any in the Bottom Nest. That's the territory of cultists, mutants, and Hellworms."

"Since you can traverse various ruined districts unharmed, you must also have a way to enter the Bottom Nest and investigate the situation of the Hellworm, right?"

"After all, you even know about me keeping illegal psyker."

Saying this, Augustus reached into his pocket, pulled out a linen-wrapped pouch, and handed it to Alexander.

Alexander opened the pouch; inside were bloodstones as pure as fresh blood.

Each one was as large as a thumb and of extremely high quality.

"This isn't payment, but a gift between friends."

Augustus smiled:

"As long as you go to the Bottom Nest and bring back some useful information for me, I'll give you more."

Alexander remained composed, pretending to stuff the bloodstones into his clothes, but instead put the pouch of bloodstones into his four-dimensional pocket.

Looking at the one hundred and fifty thousand credits exchanged from the bloodstones, Alexander's gaze towards Augustus suddenly became fervent.

If he just tied this guy up and blackmailed him directly...

But Alexander still harbored some caution.

"I just want to confirm, are you Augustus himself?" Alexander asked tentatively.

"You are indeed very interesting." Augustus nodded admiringly: "To be able to tell that I am not myself."

"What you see now is a servitor I commissioned an Archmagos of the Adeptus Mechanicus, who happened to pass by over twenty years ago, to create for me."

"That Archmagos was very interested in our family's blood. After I offered a few young children, he made this servitor for me."

"Not only does its appearance synchronize with mine, but it can also be remotely controlled through special instruments, performing intricate movements perfectly, no different from a human."

It really wasn't him. Alexander couldn't help but look at this servitor of Augustus.

It was almost impossible to tell it was a servitor; its appearance was similar to Augustus, its expressions were very lifelike, and it could even transmit consciousness remotely.

Whose Adeptus Mechanicus Archmagos' technology was so exquisite?

"May I ask what that Archmagos' name is?"

"I heard he was called Belisarius Cawl."
