Kate's words hung heavy in the air, and everyone's gaze shifted to William. He didn't move, his jaw simply tightening slightly.
Eleanor's smile faded, and the air in the room suddenly grew colder.
Vivian quickly stood, sensing the tension. "Thank you for dinner," she said, forcing a polite smile. "It was lovely meeting you Brianna, Anna, and Jake.
Kate and I should go check on Wayne and Charles. They're old, you know?" she added with a small laugh, trying to lighten the mood. "You know how men get when left unsupervised." She added, but her attempt at humor did little to lift the tension.
Eleanor, however, smiled politely. "Thank you for coming, dear," she said, her voice warm but a little sad.
The Harrington women then stood to leave. At the same time, Eleanor reached for Bri's shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. But, even after the Harrington women left, the awkwardness hung in the air like smoke.
No one said a word for a while, at least until dessert finally arrived..a soft peanut butter mousse, drizzled with caramel and chocolate. The smell alone made everyone want to get a taste. Caroline also brought in some Apple pie.
Susan leaned forward, smiling lovingly as she handed a desert plate to Bri. "You should try this, dear. It's William's favorite."
Before Bri could say a word, Jake's voice cut in.
"She can't," he said protectively. "Bri is allergic to peanuts."
Then the table went still once more, as everyone turned to look at him, but Jake didn't flinch. He reached across the table, gently sliding the mousse away from Bri. Then, as if nothing had happened, he picked up the apple pie platter and served her a slice himself. His tone softened as he handed her the desert. "Here, this one is safe."
Bri blushed, slightly embarrassed, then she softly said "Thank you,"
As he sat back down, Jake leaned in a little, lowering his voice. "Are you okay? We can leave if you want."
