Chapter 7: The Vision Quest
POV: Kael Vorn
The Codex had been relentless for three days, its notifications pulsing at the edge of Kael's vision like a persistent headache.

Kael finally approached Obi-Wan during the evening meal in the Temple refectory, where Jedi gathered to share simple food and simpler conversation. The older man looked up from his nerf steak with polite curiosity.
"Master Obi-Wan, I need guidance about Force meditation. Deep meditation. The kind that... opens doors."
Obi-Wan's eyebrows rose slightly. "Seeking visions, are you? That's a dangerous path for the untrained."
"The Codex—I mean, my instincts are telling me it's time."
"Follow me."
They descended through the Temple's deepest levels, past archives and storage chambers, until they reached a meditation room that felt older than civilization itself. The walls were carved from solid stone, not the polished marble of the upper levels, and the air hummed with accumulated Force energy from millennia of Jedi contemplation.
Ancient runes covered every surface, their meanings lost to time but their power undimmed. Kael could feel them pulling at his consciousness, inviting him deeper into the mysteries they guarded.
"This chamber has existed since the Temple's founding," Obi-Wan explained. "Many Jedi have sought visions here. Not all returned unchanged."
Before they could enter, a familiar presence approached from behind—Yoda's gimer stick tapping against stone in steady rhythm.
"Seeking answers, are you?" The ancient Master's eyes glittered in the chamber's dim light. "Careful, you must be. Show you what you need, the Force will. Not always what you want."
"What I need is the power to save everyone. What I want is for none of this to be necessary."
"I understand, Master."
Yoda studied him for a long moment before nodding slowly. "Begin, you may. But remember—in visions, truth and deception often wear the same face."
Kael settled cross-legged on the cold stone floor, the chamber's ancient energy pressing against his consciousness like a living thing. He closed his eyes and followed the Codex's guidance, allowing his breathing to slow, his heartbeat to steady, his awareness to sink inward toward the place where the Force touched every living thing.
Reality dissolved.
He fell through layers of existence—past the physical world, past the realm of thought and memory, into something deeper and more fundamental. Starlight exploded around him in impossible colors, galaxies wheeling through dimensions that had no names. Then, suddenly, he stood.
The platform beneath his feet was crystallized light, translucent and singing with harmonic frequencies that bypassed his ears and resonated directly in his bones. Around him rose towering figures—ancient Jedi from eras long forgotten, their robes marking them as belonging to different orders, different philosophies, different ages of the galaxy.
Their faces were stern and curious and infinitely sad.
One stepped forward, an elderly human woman with silver hair that seemed to contain starlight. Her presence was vast and gentle, like standing beside an ocean that had learned compassion.
"You carry knowledge that should not be," she said, her voice echoing from everywhere and nowhere. "What will you do with this burden, child?"

"I don't know," Kael answered honestly. "I want to save people, but every time I try to act on what I know, it seems to make things worse."
The ancient Jedi exchanged glances that carried the weight of millennia. The silver-haired woman gestured with one hand, and the crystalline platform expanded, becoming a viewing screen for the galaxy's darkest moments.
Kael watched Revan's fall to the Dark Side, saw the brilliant Jedi Knight become the very thing he'd fought against. The Mandalorian Wars raged across star systems, millions dying while Jedi debated the proper response. The Hundred-Year Darkness consumed whole sectors in Sith sorcery and madness.
But worst of all were the prophets—Jedi who had seen the future and tried to prevent it. A Miraluka woman who foresaw her Padawan's corruption and killed him in his sleep, only to watch his innocent brother fall to darkness in revenge. A Cerean Master who prevented a Sith Lord's rise by destroying his entire bloodline, creating a power vacuum that led to civil war. A human Knight who saved a planet from invasion by triggering the supernova that destroyed the star system.
Each vision burned into Kael's psyche like acid. He felt their despair, their crushing realization that knowledge of the future was both gift and curse. They had seen what was coming and acted to prevent it, only to discover that their interference had caused even greater tragedies.
"This is my fate. This is what happens to everyone who tries to change destiny."
The silver-haired woman's voice returned, gentle but implacable. "Knowledge is not power, child. Wisdom is knowing when to act and when to allow the river of destiny to flow. Can you learn this?"
Kael wept, overwhelmed by the weight of cosmic responsibility and his own inadequacy. How could he save a galaxy when every previous attempt to alter fate had ended in disaster? How could he watch billions die when he knew how to prevent it?
"I don't want to make things worse," he whispered. "But I can't just do nothing."
"Then you begin to understand." The ancient woman smiled, and for a moment she looked almost familiar—like someone he should remember but couldn't quite place. "The path between action and inaction is narrow, but it exists. We will show you."
The visions changed, showing him moments of perfect intervention—a Jedi who prevented a war by making both sides believe they had won, a Master who saved a planet by allowing it to be conquered, a Knight who stopped a massacre by teaching the would-be killers to find another way.
Subtle influence instead of direct action. Guidance instead of commands. Trust in the Force to work through willing instruments rather than forcing outcomes through superior knowledge.
"I understand," Kael gasped. "I can't force change. I can only... guide. Help people make better choices."
The ancient Jedi nodded approval, their forms beginning to fade back into starlight. The silver-haired woman stepped forward one last time, placing her hand on Kael's forehead.
Pure Light Side energy flooded through him, carrying with it knowledge that settled into his mind like puzzle pieces finding their proper places. An ancient Jedi ability, refined over millennia of use, designed to help generals and commanders see the flow of battle and find the optimal path to victory.
"Let this technique aid your path, child. But remember—wisdom is not seeing all possible futures. Wisdom is choosing the future that serves the greatest good."

Kael's consciousness slammed back into his body like a missile hitting atmosphere. He gasped, convulsed, and found himself collapsed on the meditation chamber's stone floor. Tears streaked his face, though he couldn't remember when he'd started crying. His body ached as if he'd been fighting for hours.
Pale dawn light filtered through the chamber's ancient windows. He'd been unconscious all night.
Footsteps echoed in the corridor outside—Yoda's distinctive gait approaching with the patience of centuries. The ancient Master appeared in the doorway, his massive eyes studying Kael with knowing compassion.
"Saw much, did you?"
Kael nodded weakly, his voice raw from exertion he didn't remember. "I saw... that trying to save everyone might doom everyone. That knowledge without wisdom is destruction."
Yoda's ears lifted slightly. "Wisdom, that is. Difficult wisdom. But necessary."
"The Jedi who came before—they tried to prevent disasters and only created worse ones. How do I avoid making the same mistakes?"
"Trust the Force, you must. And trust in others, the strength to choose their own paths." The ancient Master hobbled closer, his gimer stick tapping against stone. "Heavy, the burden of sight can be. But yours to carry alone, it is not."
"If only I could tell you what's coming. If only you could see what I've seen."
"The Order has forgotten something, hasn't it?" Kael asked instead. "Something those ancient Jedi tried to teach."
Yoda was quiet for a long moment, his expression distant. "Forgotten much, we have. In our certainty, lost our way, perhaps we have. But learn, we still can. From you, from each other, from the Force itself."
The ancient Master turned to leave, then paused at the doorway.
"Visit these chambers often, you should. Much to learn, there still is. And much to teach, you may have."
Alone again, Kael stared at his trembling hands. The new ability hummed in his consciousness—Battle Analysis, the gift of tactical sight that would let him see the flow of combat and guide others toward victory. It was exactly what he needed for the trials ahead.
But the visions haunted him. All those failed prophets, all those good intentions that had paved the road to hell. Was he destined to join their ranks? Was his very presence in this timeline another catastrophe waiting to happen?
"I can't force change. I can only guide. Trust in the Force and trust in others to choose their own paths."
The words were easy to say. Living them would be the hardest thing he'd ever done.
Outside the chamber, the Temple was waking to another day of war. Somewhere in the galaxy, Plo Koon was preparing for a mission that would put him directly in the path of General Grievous and his secret weapon. Somewhere else, clone troopers were dying for a Republic that would betray them.
And here in the deepest chambers of the Jedi Temple, one lost software engineer tried to figure out how to save the galaxy without destroying it in the process.
