Chapter 32 - Chapter 32 — The First Flight

The wind howled over the Amber Plains.

Morning light filtered through the last fading clouds as Lin Feng stood on a jagged cliff overlooking a deep gorge that split the land like a wound. His robes fluttered in the wind, lightning still crackling faintly around his fingers.

For the first time in his life, the sky didn't feel distant.

He could feel its pull.

Xuanyu Ye floated beside him, his tone half-teasing, half-proud.

"So… you're going to try it?"

Lin Feng exhaled. "If I can't fly now, then what was the point of forty-three years of pain?"

Xuanyu crossed his arms. "Most cultivators test flight with caution. You? You're standing over a gorge that eats sound."

Lin Feng grinned. "Guess I'll find out if I bounce."

He gathered his qi — steady, dense, resonant. Lightning wrapped around him like wings forming from the air itself. The Heavenstorm Veil adjusted, transforming from defense into propulsion.

Then he stepped off the cliff.

The ground fell away.

Wind screamed past his ears, pressure building against his chest. His spiritual power surged, stabilizing his descent. Then — he rose. Slowly, unsteadily, but rising.

A laugh burst from him, wild and unrestrained.

He wasn't gliding — he was flying.

Xuanyu trailed after him, shaking his head. "You look like a drunk crane!"

Lin Feng spun once in the air, laughing. "A flying crane still flies higher than a grounded master!"

Lightning rippled behind him as he pushed forward, slicing through clouds. His speed wasn't fast, but every inch gained felt like conquering the heavens. The landscape below shrank, rivers turning to silver threads, forests to patches of shadow.

He extended a hand toward the sunlight piercing the clouds.

"I could get used to this," he murmured.

Xuanyu smiled faintly — but then his eyes narrowed.

"Wait. Do you feel that?"

The air around them shifted.

The bright blue faded to gray. The wind grew unnaturally cold.

Lin Feng's smile vanished.

Lightning flickered across his skin, reacting to a pressure that came not from the earth — but from above.

He tried to stabilize his flight, but the qi around him began to twist violently, forming chaotic eddies that dragged him sideways.

Xuanyu's voice sharpened. "Drop altitude. NOW!"

"What's happening?!"

"The sky's qi is alive. You've flown into a Heaven Vein — a current where spiritual energy flows between realms!"

The wind roared like a living thing.

Clouds churned, black veins of energy spiraling down like claws. Lin Feng fought against the pull, pouring his qi into stability. His body trembled as lightning burst around him in defense.

Xuanyu's eyes widened. "If you lose control, it'll crush your meridians! Focus!"

Lin Feng clenched his jaw, pushing his Heavenstorm Veil to its limit. The lightning shield whirled around him — glowing bright, deflecting the crushing pressure.

For a moment, he stabilized.

Then the sky screamed.

A massive vortex tore open above them — a swirling black wound that twisted the sunlight itself.

Inside it, Lin Feng glimpsed something impossible: ancient runes burning within the storm, shifting in patterns that hurt to look at.

Xuanyu's face drained of color. "That's… not natural qi."

"What is it?" Lin Feng demanded.

Xuanyu's voice was barely a whisper.

"Something sealed."

The vortex pulsed once — and released a wave of energy that shattered Lin Feng's balance completely.

He was thrown downward, spinning out of control. The storm followed, tendrils of black energy chasing him like living shadows.

Xuanyu shouted over the roar, "Brace yourself! Aim for the forest below!"

Lin Feng roared, twisting his sword in midair. "HEAVENSTORM VEIL — FULL RELEASE!"

Lightning exploded around him, forming a cocoon that cut through the dark energy. The sky lit up as he plummeted, a streak of blue-white light falling from the heavens like a fallen star.

He hit the treetops hard — crashing through branches, dirt, and stone before finally slamming into a clearing.

Silence followed.

Smoke rose. Leaves drifted. His sword lay embedded beside him, glowing faintly.

Xuanyu appeared a moment later, floating cautiously. "Alive?"

Lin Feng groaned. "Mostly."

"You've just fallen from the sky into a Heaven Vein's wake. 'Mostly' is an achievement."

Lin Feng sat up, coughing dust. "What… was that thing?"

Xuanyu's gaze darkened. "Not a thing. A memory. A remnant of something that shouldn't still exist."

They looked up.

The sky above the forest was torn — a faint spiral still glowing faintly, visible even through the clouds. Within it, a single rune flickered like an eye watching the world.

Lin Feng frowned. "That rune… it looked at me."

Xuanyu's expression turned grim. "Then it's seen you. Whatever was sealed up there — now knows your name."

The wind shifted.

The air felt heavier, charged with unseen intent.

Lin Feng gripped his sword, unease crawling through him.

"Let it watch. I won't hide."

Xuanyu didn't answer. He just looked at the rune again, voice almost inaudible.

"It's not watching, Lin Feng… It's waiting."

Far above, within the swirling clouds, the black vortex began to shrink — but not vanish.

And deep inside that darkness, a faint silhouette moved — humanoid, vast, and bound by chains of light.

A whisper drifted down from the heavens, unheard by all but the wind:

"After centuries… another awakens the storm."
