Chapter 316 - 2014 Mega Auction

Date: February 14, 2014

Location: ITC Gardenia, Bangalore, India

The ballroom of the ITC Gardenia in Bangalore hummed with a tense, highly caffeinated energy. The 2014 IPL Mega Auction was officially underway.

The owners, head coaches, and data analysts of all eight franchises sat at their respective round tables, armed with spreadsheets, player profiles, and multi-crore budgets. This was the great reset. The decisions made in this room over the next forty-eight hours would dictate the balance of power in franchise cricket for the next three years.

At the Sunrisers Hyderabad table, the atmosphere was focused and calm.

Head Coach Tom Moody and Team Mentor VVS Laxman sat side-by-side, reviewing their heavily annotated target list. Sitting next to them was a young Kaviya Maran, attending her first mega auction primarily to observe and learn the complex mechanics of franchise team-building from the veterans. A few other analysts sitting at the table.

They already had a formidable retained core: Siddanth Deva, Shikhar Dhawan, Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma, and Aaron Finch. Their job today was to build the rest of the machine.

At the front of the ballroom, the veteran auctioneer Richard Madley stepped up to the podium, tapping his wooden gavel.

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the 2014 VIVO IPL Player Auction," Madley announced, his crisp British accent echoing through the hall. "We shall commence with the first set of Marquee Players. The first name out of the bag... Murali Vijay. Base price, two crores."

The Delhi Daredevils opened the bidding. A brief skirmish ensued, and Vijay was sold to Delhi for 5 crores.

The tone of the morning was immediately set. The franchises were not holding back.

"Next up," Madley called out. "Yuvraj Singh. Base price, two crores."

The room instantly sparked to life. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) raised their paddle. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) immediately countered.

The bidding war for the legendary Indian all-rounder escalated with rapid speed. Four crores. Seven crores. Ten crores.

At the SRH table, Tom Moody took a sip of his water, watching the chaos unfold with a detached, professional eye.

"They are going to bleed their purse dry," Laxman noted quietly to Moody, watching the RCB table frantically discussing their next bid.

"Let them," Moody replied smoothly. "We stick to the budget caps."

The bids crossed twelve crores. KKR hesitated, but RCB pushed forward relentlessly.

"Fourteen crores to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Are there any further bids?" Madley asked, looking around the room. "Fair warning. At fourteen crores... Sold!"

A mix of applause and murmured surprise filled the ballroom. RCB had just committed a massive portion of their auction purse to a single player within the first hour.

"Alright, moving on," Madley continued. "David Warner. Australian opening batsman. Base price, one and a half crores."

Moody sat up slightly. This was their primary target. He raised the SRH paddle immediately.

"One hundred and fifty lakhs with Sunrisers Hyderabad," Madley acknowledged.

The Delhi Daredevils, Warner's former franchise, raised their paddle.

"One hundred and sixty to Delhi."

Moody raised it again. The bidding went back and forth efficiently. Mumbai Indians briefly entered the fray at 3 crores but quickly dropped out, prioritizing their budget for fast bowlers.

Delhi pushed the bid to 5 crores, trying to test SRH's resolve.

VVS Laxman looked at Moody and gave a firm, confident nod. Moody raised the paddle again.

"Five crores, fifty lakhs to Sunrisers Hyderabad," Madley called out. He looked over at the Delhi table. The Delhi management deliberated for a few seconds before the head coach shook his head, lowering their paddle.

"At five crores, fifty lakhs... Sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad!"

Laxman smiled, jotting the name down on his notepad. They had just secured one of the most explosive openers in world cricket to partner with Shikhar Dhawan.

As the morning progressed, other teams continued to throw massive money at big names. The Delhi Daredevils spent 12.5 crores on Dinesh Karthik and another 9 crores on Kevin Pietersen. Kings XI Punjab went aggressive, securing Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson.

When the all-rounders set began, Corey Anderson's name was drawn. The New Zealander was highly sought after following his recent performances.

Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals went to war for him.

"Should we jump in?" Laxman asked, looking at the climbing numbers.

"Just to keep them honest," Moody agreed, raising the paddle at 3.5 crores. Mumbai immediately countered with 4 crores. Moody shook his head and dropped out, having successfully forced Mumbai to spend more of their purse. Anderson eventually went to the Mumbai Indians for 4.5 crores.

When Andre Russell's name came out of the bag, the SRH table paid close attention. Siddanth had highlighted the powerful West Indian as a key target for the finishing role.

SRH opened the bidding at his base price of 50 lakhs. KKR immediately challenged.

The bidding reached 2 crores.

Moody looked at the notes on his iPad. Russell's recent medical history regarding his knees was a significant red flag. Siddanth's directive was clear: get him if he's cheap, but do not enter a bidding war.

Moody lowered the paddle. KKR secured Russell.

"We need a backup plan for the pace-bowling all-rounder," Laxman noted.

"Moises Henriques," Moody said, locating the name on the upcoming list. "He's reliable, plays spin well, and won't break the bank."

When Henriques came up, the room was quiet. Most franchises had already exhausted their all-rounder budgets on bigger names. Moody raised the paddle.

"Sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for one crore!" Madley announced.

It was an excellent, pragmatic purchase.

After a quick lunch break, the auction moved into the fast bowlers.

"Mitchell Starc. Base price, two crores," Madley called.

RCB, desperate for international fast bowling, went hard. They secured the lethal Australian left-armer for 5 crores.

"Next. Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Base price, one and a half crores."

Laxman sat up straight. This was the domestic linchpin they needed to partner with Dale Steyn.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) raised their paddle. They knew the value of an Indian swing bowler. SRH immediately countered.

The two southern franchises locked horns. The price climbed past 3 crores.

CSK pushed it to 4 crores.

Moody didn't flinch. He raised the paddle to 4.25 crores.

The CSK table, led by Stephen Fleming, conferred quietly. They had already spent heavily to retain their core and buy Brendon McCullum earlier in the day. Spending over four crores on another bowler would restrict their ability to buy local spinners later. Fleming slowly lowered his paddle.

"Sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for four crores, twenty-five lakhs!"

Laxman let out a satisfied breath. The pace attack was officially complete. Steyn, Ishant, and Bhuvneshwar.

With their big-ticket items secured, the SRH table shifted into clinical bargain-hunting mode for the remainder of the afternoon.

They needed a wicket-keeper. When the young, technically sound KL Rahul came up, SRH secured him easily for 1 crore with minimal competition. To ensure they had a reliable backup, they bought the veteran Naman Ojha for a mere 50 lakhs.

When the spin bowlers were announced, Laxman took the lead.

They bought back the experienced leg-spinner Amit Mishra for 4.75 crores, outbidding the Delhi Daredevils. Because SRH had utilized their maximum quota of five player retentions prior to the auction, a massive 39 crores had already been deducted from their 60-crore limit. They had zero Right-To-Match (RTM) cards and exactly 21 crores left to build the rest of the squad.

Working with precise margins, they calmly outbid the competition to buy back Karn Sharma for 2 crores, ensuring their successful spin duo from the previous season remained intact.

Then, Richard Madley called out a relatively unknown name.

"Yuzvendra Chahal. Uncapped Indian spinner. Base price, ten lakhs."

The room was completely silent. The Mumbai Indians, where Chahal had spent the last few seasons warming the bench, showed absolutely no interest in buying him back.

Moody casually raised his paddle.

Madley looked around the room. "Ten lakhs to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Any other bids?"

Silence.

"Sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for ten lakhs."

At the SRH table, Moody and Laxman exchanged a very quiet, knowing look. They had just secured one of the most promising young wrist-spinners in the country for absolute base price.

As the evening approached, the auction entered the accelerated rounds, where unsold and requested players were brought back.

"Kane Williamson. New Zealand batsman. Base price, fifty lakhs."

Because Williamson was widely viewed as a classical Test match specialist rather than a T20 power-hitter, the other franchises completely ignored him. They were looking for sloggers.

Moody raised his paddle.

"Fifty lakhs to Sunrisers. Fair warning... Sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad!"

Moody closed his thick leather folder. The blueprint was complete. They had executed the vision flawlessly. With their remaining 1.4 crores, Moody utilized the final moments of the auction to pick up three promising uncapped domestic players at base price, comfortably hitting the IPL's minimum squad requirement of sixteen players without breaking their strict financial limits.

Thousands of miles away, the sun had long since set over Wellington, New Zealand.

Siddanth Deva lay on his hotel bed, wearing a comfortable grey t-shirt, an ice pack strapped to his right shoulder. The first day of the Test match against New Zealand had been a grueling affair in the heavy coastal winds.

His phone buzzed on the nightstand. He picked it up. It was a message from Tom Moody.

Squad finalized. Warner, Bhuvi, KL, Mishra secured. Bought Williamson and Chahal at base price. The team is ready, Skip.

Siddanth read the message, a satisfied smile spreading across his face. The management had done their job perfectly.

He locked his phone and closed his eyes, his mind already shifting back to the red-ball battle awaiting him tomorrow morning at the Basin Reserve.

While Siddanth rested in New Zealand and the franchise owners finalized their paperwork in Bangalore, the Indian internet was busy dissecting the two days of auction madness. Fans, analysts, and meme pages took to Twitter and Vibe to review the newly formed squads.
