Chapter 405 - T20 World Cup 2016 - 2

The damp, cool wind of a late monsoon evening swept across the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, carrying with it a persistent, heavy drizzle that had held the entire stadium hostage for over two hours. The colossal concrete bowl was packed to its eighty-thousand capacity, but the pitch was completely buried under a heavy layer of blue tarpaulin sheets.

Inside Room 304 of the Osmania University men's hostel in Hyderabad, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.

The three friends—Karthik, Rahul, and Shiva—were sitting on the edges of their single beds, their eyes fixed on the television screen. The pre-match broadcast was showing live footage of the ground staff frantically sweeping water off the outfield covers using manual squeegees.

"If this match gets washed out, I am going to lose my mind," Rahul groaned, his leg bouncing nervously as he clutched a cold bottle of Kingfisher. "We've been waiting for this since the Asia Cup finished. The bookies are giving India 1.30 to win. It is a guaranteed payout, but only if they actually play!"

"The rain has officially stopped in Kolkata, calm down," Karthik said, leaning forward to adjust the volume of the television. "The ground staff at Eden Gardens will have the covers off in fifteen minutes. But look at the screen—everyone is talking about just one man today."

The television broadcast showed a split-screen graphic of Siddanth Deva's past performances against Pakistan. In the long and storied history of India-Pakistan encounters, there had been legendary players who dominated, but never an ownership like this. Siddanth Deva had won the Man of the Match award in every single international fixture he had ever played against Pakistan across all formats, with only one exception during an Asia Cup match in Dhaka where a severe ankle injury prevented him from batting.

"The Devil of Cricket," Shiva grinned, taking a massive bite of a spicy chicken wing. "The Pakistan batsmen must have had sleepless nights in their hotel rooms. They know he's the one they should target, and his long hair makes him look even more like Bahubali."

"The toss is happening!" Raju yelled, running into the room from the corridor, holding his own plastic cup. "They just relased the statement! The match has been reduced to 18 overs per innings because of the rain delay! Bowlers can bowl a maximum of 4 overs."

On the television screen, MS Dhoni and Shahid Afridi walked out to the middle alongside the match referee. Dhoni called "Heads." The coin landed. Heads.

[COMMENTARY BOX - THE TOSS]

Ravi Shastri:"MS Dhoni has won the toss here in Kolkata! MS, what is the decision?"

MS Dhoni:"We are going to bowl first, Ravi. The pitch has been under covers for a long time, so there will be some moisture early on. More importantly, with the match reduced to 18 overs and the outfield being damp, chasing is the logical option. The ball will skid nicely under the lights later."

Ravi Shastri:"Any changes to the playing eleven?"

MS Dhoni:"No, we are going with the same playing eleven as the previous match."

"We are bowling first!" Rahul cheered, high-fiving Karthik. "With the new ball swinging in the damp air, Nehra and Siddanth are going to completely dismantle their top order. The fifteen thousand rupees are safe, boys!"

[FIRST INNINGS - PAKISTAN BATTING]

The Indian team took the field to a deafening, earth-shaking roar from the Eden Gardens crowd. Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah shared the new white Kookaburra ball, utilizing the early moisture to extract prodigious swing and seam.

In the second over, Ashish Nehra struck. He bowled a perfect outswinger that lured Sharjeel Khan into a loose drive, taking the outside edge straight to Ajinkya Rahane—fielding as a substitute—at first slip. Pakistan was 10 for 1.

MS Dhoni immediately signaled to Siddanth Deva to bowl the third over of the innings.

Siddanth marked his run-up. The Gold Tier Ambidexterity was fully active. Holding the ball in his left hand, he decided to exploit the left-arm angle against the right-handed Ahmed Shehzad.

Over 3

Siddanth Deva, with Gold Tier Ambidexterity fully active, began with his left-arm action against the right-handed Ahmed Shehzad.

2.1 151 km/h length delivery on middle stump, defended back to the bowler. No run.

2.2 152 km/h good length ball, pushed towards point. No run.

2.3 Beautiful left-arm outswinger at 118 km/h, pitching on middle and swinging away late. Shehzad pushed hard and edged it to MS Dhoni.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ian Bishop:"EDGED AND TAKEN! Siddanth Deva strikes in his very first over! He switches to his left arm, generates that beautiful, late outswing at 118 km/h, and Ahmed Shehzad is walking back! Pakistan is 10 for 2!"

The hostel room erupted into a chaotic, beer-spilling dance as Umar Akmal walked out to the middle.

Umar Akmal walked in at No. 4.

2.4 Sharp 153 km/h bouncer, Akmal swayed away. No run.

2.5 Slower cutter at 116 km/h, tucked to fine leg for a single. 1 run

2.6 Shahid Afridi faced his first ball. 151 km/h delivery angled in, inside edge onto pad. No run.

Ashish Nehra operated from the other end for the fourth over.

3.4 Nehra pitched a beautiful, swinging delivery on a length. Afridi, trying to force the pace, drove hard but got a thick outside edge that flew to Suresh Raina at second slip, who took a sharp, low catch. Pakistan was sliding at 15 for 3.

Pakistan managed only 43 for 3 by the end of the 5-over powerplay.

Siddanth returned to bowl his second over—the eighth over of the innings. Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik were at the crease.

Siddanth switched back to his natural right-arm express pace, completely changing the angle of attack.

Over 8

7.1 Back-of-a-length delivery at 151 km/h, Umar Akmal flicked it to square leg for a single. 1 run

7.2 Searing 152 km/h yorker to Shoaib Malik, well dug out to point. No run.

7.3 Fast outswinger at 150 km/h, Malik beaten on the outside edge. No run.

7.4 Malik stepped down the track. Siddanth banged in a 151 km/h bouncer. Malik top-edged the hook and Virat Kohli took a simple catch at short mid-wicket.

WICKET!

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Wasim Akram:"Caught! The extra bounce does the trick! Siddanth Deva has his second! He saw Malik stepping out, hit the deck hard at 151 km/h, and Kohli makes no mistake. Pakistan are completely falling apart at 44 for 4!"

Sarfaraz Ahmed, walked back out to bat.

7.5 Siddanth greeted him with a fast, full delivery at 152 km/h on off-stump. Sarfaraz defended it back to the bowler. No run.

7.6 Siddanth went short and wide at 151 km/h. Sarfaraz cut it to deep point for a single, keeping the strike. 1 run.

The middle overs became a slow, agonizing grind for Pakistan as Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin strangled the scoring. By the fourteenth over, they had crawled to 87 for 4.

Siddanth returned for his third over—the fifteenth over of the innings. Umar Akmal and Sarfaraz Ahmed were batting.

Over 15 (Overs 14.1 to 14.6)

14.1 Siddanth ran in. Umar Akmal, looking to break the shackles, stepped out and drove a full delivery powerfully down the ground for a boundary. 4 runs.

14.2 Siddanth corrected his length immediately, delivering a stinging, 153 km/h yorker. Akmal dug it out to mid-off. No run.

14.3 Siddanth bowled a beautifully disguised slower cutter at 118 km/h. Akmal, expecting express pace, went through with his shot entirely too early. The ball took the leading edge and lobbed softly back to the bowler. Siddanth caught it easily.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Harsha Bhogle:"Caught and bowled! Siddanth Deva gets his third! The slower ball at 118 km/h completely deceives Umar Akmal, and Deva makes no mistake. Pakistan are 91 for 5!"

Mohammad Sami walked out to bat.

14.4 Siddanth welcomed him with a sharp, hostile bouncer at 151 km/h. Sami ducked safely. No run.

14.5 Siddanth bowled a slower outswinger at 122 km/h. Sami swung hard and missed. No run.

14.6 Siddanth finished the over with a fast, straight delivery at 151 km/h on middle stump. Sami pushed it to long-on for a single. 1 run.

Siddanth returned to bowl his final over—the seventeenth over of the innings. Pakistan had struggled to 101 for 6 after Bumrah dismissed Sarfaraz.

Over 17 (Overs 16.1 to 16.6)

16.1 Siddanth ran in and bowled a fast, 151 km/h delivery outside off stump. Wahab Riaz pushed it to point. No run.

16.2 Siddanth unleashed an absolute missile. A 155 km/h in-swinging yorker aimed directly at the base of off-stump. Wahab's bat was still in the air when the ball crashed into the timber, sending the off-stump cartwheeling backward.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ravi Shastri:"BOWLED HIM! TIMBER SHATTERED! Siddanth Deva has four! A 155 km/h thunderbolt that Wahab Riaz had absolutely no answer to! Pakistan are nine down!"

Mohammad Irfan walked out as the next batsman.

16.3 Siddanth welcomed him with a sharp bouncer at 151 km/h. Irfan ducked awkwardly. No run.

16.4 Siddanth pitched it full at 153 km/h on middle stump. Irfan blocked it. No run.

16.5 Siddanth bowled a slower cutter at 119 km/h. Irfan tapped it to cover and scrambled for a single. 1 run.

16.6 Mohammad Sami faced the last ball. Siddanth delivered a fast, rising bouncer at 152 km/h. Amir swung and missed. No run.

The innings concluded shortly after. Jasprit Bumrah took 2 wickets in the final over, wrapping up the Pakistan innings for a meager, highly disappointing total of 106 all out in 17.5 overs.

[SECOND INNINGS - INDIA CHASE]

The floodlights of Eden Gardens burned brighter than ever, casting a golden halo over the sea of blue jerseys that filled every corner of the iconic stadium. The target was a mere 107 runs in 18 overs — a required run rate of just 5.94.

On any other day, against any other team, this would have been a casual walk in the park. But this was India versus Pakistan. This was Eden Gardens. And nothing was ever simple here.

The roar that greeted Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan as they walked out was deafening, a primal wall of sound that vibrated through the players' chests.

Pakistan's players, despite their lowly total of 106, looked hungry.

Mohammad Amir, eyes blazing with determination, marked his run-up with the new white Kookaburra ball clutched tightly in his left hand.

The chase began cautiously. Amir and Mohammad Sami bowled with fire and discipline. India reached 12 for no loss in the first over, but disaster struck in the second.

Rohit Sharma, trying to break the shackles early, danced down the track and attempted a lofted shot over the covers off Sami. The timing was off by a fraction. The ball ballooned off the toe-end of his bat and hung in the air like a betrayal.

Shoaib Malik, stationed at mid-off, took a few steps forward and completed a straightforward catch. Rohit walked back, shaking his head, 10 runs off 8 balls.

India: 12 for 1

A nervous murmur rippled through the stands. Then, in the fourth over, Mohammad Amir produced pure magic. A searing in-swinging yorker, perfectly pitched, smashed into Shikhar Dhawan's pads as he tried to flick it away.

The appeal was instantaneous. The umpire's finger went up without hesitation. Dhawan, stunned, stood for a second before trudging off for 6.

India: 18 for 2

The Eden Gardens crowd fell into a tense silence. Two openers gone cheaply. The match suddenly felt heavier than the scoreboard suggested.

Then, the stadium came alive again.

Siddanth Deva emerged from the dugout, his bat resting casually on his shoulder, helmet gleaming under the lights. The roar that greeted him was earth-shaking — a mix of hope, faith, and pure love from the Kolkata faithful. This was their hero, who had ripped through Pakistan's batting earlier with 4 for 16. Now, he was being asked to anchor the chase.

Virat Kohli, already at the crease and simmering with intent, greeted him with a firm fist bump and a quiet smile. "Easy does it, Sid. We've got this," Kohli said, his voice calm but eyes burning with that famous competitive fire.

Siddanth took his guard, tapping the middle stump twice, adjusting his gloves. He looked every bit the composed warrior.

Over 5 – Mohammad Sami bowling

Kohli was on strike. Sami ran in with aggression, hurling a full delivery on off-stump. Kohli leaned into it elegantly, driving it down to long-off for a single. Strike rotated.

Siddanth faced his first ball in the middle. The crowd held its breath. Sami delivered a good-length ball just outside off. Siddanth leaned forward, bat face angled perfectly, and defended it with soft hands toward point. The ball died immediately.

Next ball — in-swinging delivery on middle. Siddanth played it late with soft hands, pushing it gently toward mid-on. No run. He was reading the bowler like an open book.

The fourth ball was shorter. Siddanth rocked back with lightning speed, wrists rolling beautifully as he pulled the ball along the ground through deep square leg. The timing was exquisite. The batsmen scampered back for two comfortable runs. The crowd cheered loudly. Siddanth was off the mark. (Deva 2*)

Fifth ball — wide outside off. Siddanth watched it sail past, eyes tracking the swing, leaving it alone with discipline.

Final ball of the over — he opened the face of the bat at the last moment, guiding it delicately to third man for a single, retaining strike for the next over.

Over 6 – Wahab Riaz

Wahab Riaz came steaming in, muscles rippling, eyes narrowed. He was desperate to make something happen. First ball — a sharp 146 km/h length delivery. Siddanth defended it solidly back down the pitch.

Second ball — a vicious bouncer. Siddanth dropped his wrists at the last second and ducked smoothly, the ball whistling past his helmet. The crowd gasped.

Third ball — Wahab offered just a fraction of width. That was all Siddanth needed. He transferred his weight forward and carved the ball through the covers with pure elegance. The white ball raced across the lush outfield and crashed into the boundary ropes.

**FOUR!** The Eden Gardens exploded in joy.

"That's the shot of a champion!" cried the commentator.

He added a quick single off the fifth ball and watched Kohli tuck the last delivery to fine leg for one.

**Over 7 – Shahid Afridi**

The spin king was introduced. Afridi tossed one up temptingly. Kohli stepped down and drove it for one. Siddanth nudged the next to long-on for another single.

Afridi flighted one generously. Kohli, sensing an opportunity, danced down the track and went for a big loft over mid-on. He didn't quite get to the pitch. The ball ballooned high toward long-on. Umar Akmal settled under it — a straightforward chance.

The entire stadium held its breath. Akmal's hands came together… and the ball slipped through them, bouncing off his chest and rolling away. A dropped sitter. The crowd erupted in a mix of relief and mocking laughter.

Kohli and Siddanth ran hard for two runs. As they crossed, Kohli laughed, shaking his head. "Eyes closed, Sid. I swear he caught it with his eyes shut!"

Siddanth grinned back. "He looked more scared of the ball than I was of his bowling. Let's make them regret that drop, Cheeku."

Siddanth then swept the next delivery elegantly past short fine leg for two more runs. The partnership was blossoming.

The middle overs became a masterclass in intelligent cricket. Siddanth and Kohli rotated strike beautifully, punishing loose deliveries and respecting the good ones. Siddanth brought up his twenty with a glorious sweep off Afridi for four. Kohli looked increasingly dangerous, his footwork against spin a thing of beauty.

By the end of the 13th over, India had reached a comfortable **69 for 2**.

Siddanth was rock-solid on 30*, while Kohli was beginning to accelerate.

**Over 14 – Afridi**

Kohli decided enough was enough. Afridi tossed one up on middle. Kohli stepped down the track, created room, and unleashed a majestic lofted drive over deep extra cover. The ball soared high and crashed into the stands. **FOUR!** The "Kohli! Kohli!" chants thundered around the ground.

Kohli brought up his **fifty** a few overs later with a crisp drive through the covers, raising his bat to all four corners of Eden Gardens. The crowd gave him a standing ovation. India's chase was now firmly in control.

**Over 17 – Mohammad Sami**

Kohli went into overdrive. He smashed two boundaries in quick succession — one thunderous cover drive and a delicate cut past point. India raced to **89 for 2**. Only 18 runs needed off the final over.

**Over 18 – Wahab Riaz** (India need 18 runs)

Tension was at its peak. Wahab ran in aggressively. First ball — Kohli pulled a short delivery with ferocious power through square leg for **FOUR**. The crowd went wild.

Second ball — Kohli flicked one to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Siddanth was back on strike with 12 needed off 5 balls. Wahab tried a yorker. Siddanth, cool as ice under pressure, dropped his bat softly into the gap at cover and stole a quick single. (Deva 31*)

Kohli took another single off the fourth ball.

Fifth ball — Wahab attempted a wide yorker. Siddanth blocked it safely. No run.

Then, pure drama unfolded.

As Wahab turned at the top of his mark, his front foot slipped slightly on the damp run-up area. He lost his balance and released a massive leg-side wide that flew past the keeper and raced all the way to the fine-leg boundary for **five wides**. The stadium exploded in absolute ecstasy. India were now just 6 runs away with one ball remaining.

**Final Ball – 17.6**

Wahab Riaz, under crushing pressure, tried to bowl a straight delivery but it came out as a low full toss on the pads. Siddanth Deva's eyes lit up like a predator spotting prey. He cleared his front leg, whipped his wrists with terrifying power and timing, and launched the ball high into the Kolkata night.

The white ball sailed majestically over deep square leg, climbing higher and higher before crashing into the second tier of the stands.

**SIX!**

The Eden Gardens erupted like a volcano. Fireworks lit up the sky. Fans jumped, screamed, hugged strangers, and cried tears of joy. Siddanth Deva stood there, bat raised high, a calm smile on his face as the Indian dressing room rushed onto the field.

**[COMMENTARY BOX]**

**Ravi Shastri (voice hoarse with excitement):** "IT'S A SIX! INDIA HAVE WON! Siddanth Deva has sealed a magnificent victory! What an incredible finish from the young all-rounder!"

Kohli ran toward Siddanth and jumped on his back, both players laughing in pure delight. The entire Indian team joined them in the middle, celebrating wildly.
