Chapter 10 - AGAINST THE CALAMITY

⚙️ IRON VEIL — Chapter Nine

PART I — Holding the Line

The battlefield of Sector 59 had become a furnace.

Smoke coiled through shattered streets, and the sky pulsed orange with fire from continuous bombardment. Ragnar Vermis reared high above the ruins, its titanic body twisting as explosions rippled across its armored hide.

It was no longer just an S-class demon.

The Iron Veil command had upgraded its status in real time.

Calamity-Class Threat.

Director Helena Voss's voice cut cleanly through the chaos over all channels.

Voss: "All units, maintain pressure. Do not allow the target to adapt."

Above Ragnar Vermis, aerial carriers released canisters that burst midair, flooding the zone with Blue Rose gas. The vapor shimmered faintly blue, curling into the monster's spiracles.

The effect was immediate.

Ragnar Vermis shrieked—a deafening, vibrating sound that rattled teeth and shattered the last standing glass in the sector. Its massive body recoiled, movements slowing as the toxin interfered with its regeneration.

Lady Eve landed hard on a collapsed tower, blades crossed.

Eve: "It's reacting. The gas is working."

Samurai locked his exosuit into firing stance.

Samurai: "Switching munitions. Bullets aren't cutting it."

Across the battlefield, Slayers followed suit.

Rail rifles disengaged.

Missile racks deployed.

Artillery systems recalibrated.

Missiles screamed through the air, slamming into Ragnar Vermis in coordinated waves. The impacts didn't pierce its armor—but they staggered it, forcing the massive worm to coil defensively.

The ground cracked as the demon slammed its body down in fury, flattening entire blocks in seconds.

Then—it tried to flee.

The Burrow Attempt

Ragnar Vermis plunged its head downward, armor grinding against concrete and bedrock as it began to burrow.

Voss: "It's retreating underground! Stop it!"

Before the monster could disappear, Iron Veil bombers swept low.

With mechanical precision, they released subterranean landmines, embedding them into the ground ahead of Ragnar Vermis's projected path.

The earth erupted.

Shockwaves blasted upward, throwing dust and debris into the sky. Ragnar Vermis shrieked again, violently pulling itself back to the surface, disoriented and enraged.

The Slayers pressed harder.

Blue Rose gas thickened.

Missiles kept coming.

Drones harassed its eyes and vents.

But even wounded, Ragnar Vermis was still a nightmare.

With a final, furious roar, it slammed its body into the ground, cracking the earth open and launching itself away from the city—vanishing into the distant wasteland beyond Sector 59.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

Voss: "Cease fire. Target has retreated."

No cheers came.

Everyone knew the truth.

This wasn't a victory.

It was a warning.

PART II — Evacuation Under Fire

While the Slayers fought the Calamity, the trainees never stopped moving.

Aiden coordinated evacuation routes using live terrain data, constantly rerouting civilians away from unstable zones.

Adolf carried the injured, lifting rubble with raw strength when rescue drones failed.

Fushiguro's drones mapped collapsing underground cavities, guiding survivors through narrow escape paths seconds before the ground caved in.

They worked until exhaustion blurred their vision.

And still—they kept going.

As the final evacuation transport lifted off, Aiden looked back at the ruined sector.

Aiden (quietly): "If that's one demon… what happens when there are more?"

Fushiguro didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

PART III — Two Days Later

The Iron Veil Academy buzzed with activity once more.

Training resumed—but everything felt different.

The recruits had seen an S-class demon.

They had heard its roar.

They had watched the Slayers struggle.

That knowledge weighed heavily.

In the training yards, Aiden, Adolf, and Fushiguro ran drills with sharper focus.

Strikes were faster.

Commands were cleaner.

Mistakes were fewer.

No one laughed as much anymore.

They understood now.

This wasn't preparation for a hypothetical war.

It was preparation for survival.

PART IV — The Three-Hour Council

Deep within Iron Veil Headquarters, a sealed chamber activated.

A circular table illuminated as holographic projections flared to life.

Present were the highest authorities of the Iron Veil:

-Director Helena Voss

-Captain Lin Ardent

-Lady Eve

-Samurai

-Chief Strategist Marcus Hale-

Dr. Irena Volkov, Head of Demon Research

-Commander Rafe Calder, Logistics and Armaments

The doors sealed.

The meeting began.

Hour One — The Threat Assessment

Dr. Volkov projected combat footage of Ragnar Vermis.

Volkov: "Ragnar Vermis displayed rapid adaptation.

Resistance to kinetic weapons.

Partial tolerance to Blue Rose gas."

She paused, grim.

"If it returns, it will be harder to stop."

Strategist Hale folded his arms.

Hale: "And it wasn't coordinated. It was… instinctive."

Samurai leaned forward.

Samurai: "Meaning something else might be guiding the smarter ones."

Voss said nothing—but her expression hardened.

Hour Two — The Bigger Picture

Lady Eve activated another feed.

It showed Zenn, frozen briefly in recon footage before vanishing.

Eve: "We're seeing increased A-class coordination.

That does not happen without leadership."

Captain Lin added:

Lin: "And our trainees were exposed to live combat.

They performed beyond expectations."

Voss finally spoke.

Voss: "Then we accelerate the program."

The room went still.

Voss:"Humanity cannot afford to wait.

If demons are evolving—

we must evolve faster."

Hour Three — The Decision

Commander Calder summarized projections.

Calder: "If a coordinated demon uprising begins, current Slayer numbers won't be enough."

Voss stood.

Voss:"Then Iron Veil will not remain reactive.

We will hunt.

We will preempt.

And we will forge a new generation capable of facing what's coming."

Her eyes lingered on the trainees' performance logs—Aiden's name among them.

Voss: "The future is already on the battlefield.

Whether they are ready or not."

The meeting ended.

The war had entered a new phase.

Final Scene

Far from Iron Veil—

Ragnar Vermis slithered into the depths of a shattered canyon, its wounds knitting slowly.

Above, Zenn watched from the shadows.

His third eye pulsed.

Zenn: "Good.

Let them believe they held the line."

He smiled.

"The next time… there will be no retreat."
