Chapter 50 - Chapter 50 – Repeated Crossfire! Nick Fury’s Hidden Plan

The holographic call flickered to life in Director Alexander Pierce's office, revealing the familiar, stern face of Nick Fury.

"Well," Fury said flatly, "if you're free, come to my office. There's something we need to discuss."

Before Pierce could respond, the transmission cut off.

The room fell silent except for the faint hum of the monitors.

Standing nearby, Agent Xavier, one of Pierce's HYDRA-aligned subordinates, shifted nervously. "Sir… could it be that—" he swallowed hard, "—Fury found out about the operation?"

Pierce shot him a sharp look. "Calm yourself. He may want to talk about something else."

But even as he said it, a knot of doubt tightened in his gut. Fury wasn't a man who called without purpose.

Pierce thought for a long moment, then said quietly, "Stay here. If something goes wrong, I'll send you the signal."

If Fury had discovered HYDRA's infiltration, their contingency plan would have to be activated immediately.

Straightening his suit, Pierce left his office and headed toward the top floor — to the Tri-Carrier's main control wing, where Fury's private office overlooked Washington like a hawk's perch.

The Meeting

Nick Fury's office was sleek, minimalist, and sterile — the perfect reflection of the man himself.

When Pierce entered, Fury stood with his hands behind his back, gazing out the window at the city skyline.

"Come in," Fury said without turning. His tone was casual, but there was something calculated in his voice.

Pierce closed the door behind him. "You wanted to see me?"

"Yeah," Fury said, finally turning to face him. "Take a seat."

The two exchanged brief, polite smiles — the kind that masked daggers beneath the surface.

After a few moments of small talk, Fury got straight to the point. "Recently, I've noticed an increase in S.H.I.E.L.D. agent casualties."

Pierce froze. His pulse quickened.

Those "casualties" were his doing — collateral damage from HYDRA's long-term infiltration strategy. Every year, Pierce's people quietly brainwashed low-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into HYDRA operatives.

Those who couldn't be turned were sent on suicidal field assignments. The logic was simple: if they couldn't serve HYDRA, they wouldn't live long enough to betray it.

Now, Fury was mentioning it directly.

Could he have found out?

Pierce forced a neutral smile. "Yes… there's been some loss. The field's been rough lately."

He discreetly slid one hand into his pocket, his thumb brushing the small emergency transmitter hidden there — the trigger that would send Xavier the code to initiate a forced uprising.

If Fury showed any hint of suspicion, HYDRA's plan would have to accelerate.

But then Fury spoke again.

"Of course," he said casually, "I know it's not anyone's fault. These things happen in our line of work."

Pierce paused mid-movement. His hand froze on the transmitter.

"…Right," he said smoothly, relaxing back into his seat.

"Still," Fury continued, pouring tea into two small cups, "we'll need to replace our losses soon. Recruitment should be a priority."

Pierce stiffened again. The recruitment process was one of HYDRA's most effective infiltration channels — they planted new operatives among every incoming wave of S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits.

If Fury was touching that system, then HYDRA's cover could unravel.

Fury leaned forward, studying him with that single, piercing eye. "You've been overseeing that, haven't you, Alexander?"

Pierce's hand once again drifted toward the transmitter.

But Fury suddenly smiled, clapping him on the shoulder. "Good work. You've kept the system running like clockwork."

Pierce forced a laugh, his heart pounding. "Ah, thank you. We do what we can."

He exhaled subtly. Crisis averted — or so he thought.

The Unexpected Question

Then Fury said something that made his blood run cold.

"Oh, one more thing," Fury said, walking over to his terminal. "Have you heard of Vanderbuilt Technologies recently?"

The name hit Pierce like a thunderbolt.

Inside, alarm bells screamed. He knows. He knows about the project.

Vanderbuilt Technologies — Levi's company — was directly tied to the incident earlier that night, and HYDRA's failed assassination attempt. If Fury had connected those dots, everything could collapse.

Pierce's throat went dry. "V-Vanderbuilt?"

Fury nodded, still calm. "Yeah. They've been developing a line of synthetic workers — Modia Units, they call them. Semi-autonomous humanoids for industrial labor and tactical support."

Pierce didn't answer, keeping his face still as stone.

Fury continued, activating a display behind him. On the screen appeared rows of data — schematics and performance records for Vanderbuilt's Modia Units.

"I'm considering buying a batch for S.H.I.E.L.D.," Fury said. "To help handle low-risk field operations. Cheaper than training fresh agents."

He turned back to Pierce with a grin. "So, I'll need you to request funding from the World Security Council."

Pierce stared blankly for two seconds, his mind blank.

That's it? He just wants money?

After all that tension, all that fear — Fury just wanted to requisition Modia Units?

In his head, Pierce cursed furiously. You bald son of a—

But his face remained a perfect mask of professionalism. "Of course. For the good of S.H.I.E.L.D., I'll see that the Council approves the budget."

Fury smirked and raised his cup. "Knew I could count on you."

They discussed a few details about contract numbers and deployment logistics. Then, as casually as he'd arrived, Pierce stood, shook Fury's hand, and left the office.

Aftermath

The moment the door closed, Pierce let out a long, shaky breath. Sweat glistened on his forehead.

"M—motherf—" He stopped himself, muttering under his breath instead. "That bald bastard nearly gave me a heart attack."

He straightened his tie and headed back to his private office.

The second the door shut behind him, his calm mask cracked.

"Xavier!" he snapped. "Call off the internal mobilization. Tell HYDRA to lie low. No moves until I give the word."

"Yes, sir!" Xavier answered immediately.

"And another thing," Pierce added coldly, "terminate the Vanderbuilt Technologies operation. Immediately. We'll find another avenue."

If Levi's company had caught Fury's attention, continuing the infiltration there was too risky.

Within minutes, encrypted messages were already being sent to HYDRA cells across the globe — orders to cease all movement, destroy evidence, and freeze all active plans involving Vanderbuilt Technologies.

Meanwhile – Nick Fury's Office

Back in his office, Fury sat back in his chair with a small smile. He took a sip of coffee — not tea this time — and chuckled softly to himself.

He had no idea that his conversation with Pierce had nearly sent HYDRA into full revolt.

To him, it had just been another bureaucratic discussion.

Still, as he reviewed Vanderbuilt's data on the holographic screen, he frowned slightly.

"Hmm…"

The Modia Units were impressive — near-human artificial workers capable of thought learning and combat adaptation. Rumor had it they'd been designed using alien-derived technology, possibly even Vibranium-infused power cores.

That kind of tech would make S.H.I.E.L.D. operations far cheaper and safer. But Fury's instincts whispered caution. The data signatures, the coding style — they were far too advanced for any Earth-based company.

He leaned back, tapping his finger thoughtfully on the desk.

"Levi, huh…" he muttered. "You're either a genius or a problem waiting to happen."

He smirked, the faint reflection of the city lights glinting across his single eye.

"Maybe I should bring him in — see what side of the line he stands on."

He tilted his head, the idea forming clearly in his mind.

"If Levi joins S.H.I.E.L.D., maybe we'll save a lot of trouble… and a lot of money."

Fury stood and walked to the window, watching the skyline glow against the night. Down below, Washington was quiet — but in the shadows, countless invisible wars were already being fought.

He couldn't know that deep beneath Vanderbuilt Technologies, Levi's Death Thunder unit had already awakened. Nor could he see the coming storm that would pit man, machine, and ideology against each other.

For now, Fury simply folded his hands behind his back and smiled.

"Let's see what the game looks like when the board resets."
