Chapter 5 - The First External Test

The forest surrounding Kunugigaoka was unusually still that morning. A faint mist clung to the branches, curling through the underbrush in slow, deliberate tendrils. Anya Forger walked along the path to Class 3-E with Loid and Yor, her small frame tense, eyes darting nervously between shadows. Every snapping twig, every rustle of leaves seemed amplified in her heightened awareness. Something feels off… today is different.

Inside the classroom, the students were preparing for the day's exercises, their movements precise, almost mechanical, yet buzzing with latent energy. Chalkboards shifted slightly, papers hovered midair, and faint sparks of static hummed through the devices scattered on the floor. Koro-sensei was a blur of yellow, tentacles flicking as he adjusted settings, monitored calculations, and communicated with students simultaneously.

Karma Akabane leaned lazily against his chair, his eyes sharp. "Morning, new girl. Ready for what's coming?" He smirked. "It won't be like yesterday. This is… different."

Anya's stomach tightened. Different… how? What does he mean by that? She swallowed, focusing on the patterns around her, attempting to anticipate the day's challenges. Her telepathy flared involuntarily, scanning the class for subtle shifts, the tiniest hints of intent, but the mental currents were already complex, interwoven with Koro-sensei's rapid calculations.

Nagisa Shiota, seated near the window, observed her with quiet intensity. She's holding up, but I need to see her under pressure when the environment changes. Today may be the test that reveals her true limits.

Loid, standing at the back, scanned the perimeter, calculating probabilities of risk. Yesterday and the day before, she adapted remarkably. But someone placed her here for a reason. If there's an external factor today, I need to anticipate it and ensure her safety without compromising our cover.

Yor's senses were taut, scanning the classroom, the forest outside, the slightest movement in the wind. Something is coming. I can feel it. It's not inside the classroom. But it will reach us.

Koro-sensei clapped his tentacles together, signaling the start of the day. "Today, Class 3-E will face a different kind of exercise," he said with a musical lilt. "An external challenge. You will need to combine strategy, agility, and mental coordination to succeed. Anya, you are expected to participate fully."

Anya's heart raced. External challenge meant variables beyond the classroom's predictable chaos. I have to survive… I have to.

The students moved into positions. Anti-Koro devices clicked into readiness, papers floated, and the faint hum of calculations intensified. Koro-sensei darted across the room, testing reactions, adjusting sequences, and monitoring mental responses.

Anya's first move was hesitant. She misjudged the trajectory of a floating chalkboard, and a tentacle grazed her shoulder. She rolled instinctively, narrowly avoiding impact, and scrambled upright, her chest heaving. I have to be faster… I can't rely solely on reaction.

Nagisa whispered softly, "Focus on the patterns, not the chaos. Anticipate rhythm, not single movements."

She closed her eyes briefly, allowing instinct and telepathy to merge. The chaotic mental currents coalesced into discernible patterns. Each movement of Koro-sensei, each shift in the class, became part of a larger rhythm she could navigate. She dodged, rolled, and adjusted with surprising fluidity.

Karma's grin widened. "Impressive… she's predicting, not just reacting. That's rare for a new student."

Loid's gaze remained analytical. He tracked every anomaly, every deviation from normal patterns. Her adaptation is exceptional. But the placement cannot be random. Someone wants her here for a reason.

Yor's eyes flicked toward the forest, her senses detecting subtle disturbances: footprints, broken branches, faint vibrations. Something is approaching… possibly dangerous… I must remain vigilant.

Suddenly, the classroom's door creaked open, and a gust of wind swept in, carrying leaves and faint metallic scent. A shadow flickered just outside the threshold, moving unnaturally fast. Koro-sensei's head tilted slightly, though his smile never faltered.

"Ah," he said lightly, "it appears we have unexpected variables today. Class 3-E, pay attention."

Anya's pulse quickened. This is it… the external factor. I need to survive… and I need to understand it.

From the shadow emerged a figure clad in dark tactical gear, moving with calculated precision. The students stiffened, some gripping devices, others whispering strategies. Koro-sensei floated in front of Anya, his body a bright shield against immediate danger.

"External evaluation," Koro-sensei announced cheerfully. "This is a test of your coordination under unforeseen threat. Handle it wisely, Class 3-E!"

Anya's small body tensed, mental overload threatening to consume her. She sensed the intruder's thoughts: methodical, focused, lethal. I can't just react… I have to predict… and counter…

Karma whispered beside her, "Keep your mind sharp. Watch patterns, not actions. That's how you survive."

Nagisa nodded subtly, offering quiet reassurance. She can do this. Just keep observing, adjust, and survive.

The intruder moved, testing the students with rapid, calculated assaults. Koro-sensei darted, tentacles sweeping, while Anya began to coordinate with the others, reading intentions, predicting movements, and adjusting her position. Her body moved in ways that defied her size, dodging, rolling, and responding to the external threat while maintaining synchronization with the class.

Loid's mind raced, analyzing every angle, every possible contingency. She's adapting again, remarkably. But the purpose of this placement is still unclear. The risk is too high to ignore.

Yor remained on alert, tracking the intruder with subtle movements, ready to intervene if necessary. This is more than a simple test… there's an intent behind it.

The drill escalated. Papers flew, devices clicked and whirred, and mental calculations reached a fever pitch. Anya's telepathy allowed her to anticipate trajectories, coordinate with teammates, and adjust rapidly to both internal and external stimuli. Fatigue gnawed at her small frame, but determination and instinct carried her forward.

Karma leaned back, observing silently. "She's not just surviving… she's strategizing. That's… unusual."

Nagisa noted, "Her resilience is extraordinary. But this is a true test of endurance. I need to see how she responds under prolonged stress."

Koro-sensei floated closer to Anya, tilting his head. "Remarkable. You are exceeding expectations. But the test is not over. Adaptation must continue."

Anya's body trembled, but she continued, guided by instinct, telepathy, and sheer will. She dodged, predicted, and synchronized, becoming an integral part of the defensive flow against the external threat.

The intruder's assault finally ceased, retreating into the forest, leaving Class 3-E breathless but intact. Koro-sensei floated in the center of the room, observing the aftermath with faint admiration.

"Excellent work," he said. "You have all performed admirably. Anya, your adaptability is astonishing."

Anya slumped in her seat, exhausted but exhilarated. I survived… again. I can do this… I think…

Loid crouched beside her, voice calm but firm. "You did well. This was more than a drill. We need to uncover why this external test was set for you. Someone orchestrated it."

Yor's hand brushed gently against Anya's hair. "We will protect you. Always."

Karma smirked knowingly. "Interesting… she's not just surviving. She's learning fast. I want to see how far she can go."

Nagisa observed silently, calculating. She has potential beyond the ordinary. But the question remains: how much can she endure before the strain becomes dangerous?

The forest outside remained ominously still, shadows lengthening with the descending sun. Anya's hand slipped into Loid's as they walked, her mind buzzing with the day's events. The challenges had escalated, and the underlying purpose of her placement loomed ever larger.

Koro-sensei's thoughts lingered in the back of her mind: This child is extraordinary. She is more than a new student. But what is she truly capable of? And what consequences will follow her integration into Class 3-E?

The first external test had concluded, but the questions it raised were far from answered. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, more scrutiny, and perhaps deeper threats—both inside and outside the classroom.

And somewhere, in the shadows of the surrounding forest, unseen observers recorded, evaluated, and waited, their intent unknown but undeniably significant.
