Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: The hidden camp

Night fell like a blanket of silence over the valley. The stars were faint, half-hidden by drifting clouds, and the moon rose pale behind the peaks of Phnom Sampov. The air smelled of dust and smoke — the scent of war that never truly left.

Samreth and Sophea waited until the last patrol passed, the sound of boots fading down the hill. Then, quietly, they began to move.

The path ahead was narrow, weaving between the ruins of old temples and broken trees. Fireflies blinked faintly around them — small sparks of life in the darkness. Samreth's pack felt heavy on his back, but he didn't complain. Sophea walked a few steps ahead, her figure barely visible through the shadows.

Every few minutes, she would stop, listen, then motion for him to follow. Her instincts were flawless — the way she melted into the dark, the way she breathed with the forest. Samreth couldn't look away.

At last, the jungle opened into a hollow — a cave hidden behind a curtain of vines. The faint glow of candles flickered inside. Sophea turned to him, her voice low."This is it. The hidden camp. Not many know it still exists."

Samreth followed her inside. The air was cool, the ground uneven. Inside, a few survivors huddled together — women, children, and two older men with kind but wary eyes. They looked up as Sophea entered.

One man stood. "You made it."She nodded. "And I brought someone with me."

The man's gaze moved to Samreth, studying him. "He's not from here."

Sophea hesitated. "No. But he's… someone I trust."

They exchanged a few words quietly, then the man offered Samreth a seat near the small fire. The warmth felt strange after so many cold nights.

As the others drifted to sleep, Sophea stayed near him. The firelight danced across her face — soft, golden, alive.

Samreth broke the silence. "All those people we saw along the way… all the ones you've saved. You're risking your life every day for them."

Sophea looked into the fire. "Someone has to," she said. "If we don't, no one will remember who we were."

He reached out slowly, brushing her hand. "You sound like someone I knew — someone who refused to give up even when the world did."

Her lips curved faintly. "And you sound like someone who doesn't belong to this time."

He chuckled quietly. "Maybe I don't. But every moment with you feels like the only time that matters."

She turned to him then — eyes bright, searching his face. "You came back for me. Even when everyone said I was gone."

"I told you," he whispered, his voice rough. "Love finds its way back."

The words hung between them, fragile but true. Sophea's breath caught — then she leaned closer, slowly, as if afraid the world might shatter if she moved too fast.

Samreth's heart pounded. His hand found her cheek, the warmth of her skin chasing away every nightmare. And then, under the dim flicker of candlelight, their lips met — soft, trembling, a promise made between two broken souls.

The kiss was not perfect. It was messy, full of exhaustion and longing, but it carried everything they hadn't said — every mile walked, every tear shed, every heartbeat lost to time.

When they finally parted, Sophea rested her forehead against his. "If we live through this," she whispered, "don't ever leave again."

Samreth smiled faintly, his voice low. "Not even time can take me away from you."

Outside, the forest sighed as the night deepened. And within the hidden camp, beneath the breath of danger and the hum of silence, two hearts beat together — fragile, defiant, and alive.
