Chapter 26 — Varek's Pursuit

Solace — Deep Space, Approaching Dominion Territory

The Solace shuddered as it tore through the void, engines straining under the weight of exhausted survivors. Mira pressed herself against the console, monitoring the children. 47-B sat slumped beside her, breathing shallowly, still trembling from the Core's detonation.

Kael leaned heavily on the bulkhead, crimson light still faintly pulsing beneath his fractured armor. Every nerve in his body screamed, but there was no time to rest. Not with Varek out there.

Eris's fingers danced over the comm panel. "We're clear of the Array's debris field, but… I'm picking up something." Her voice caught. "Fast-moving signatures. Multiple."

Kael's chest tightened. "Varek?"

Eris's eyes widened. "He's not just surviving. He's tracking us. He's… faster than before."

Mira clenched her jaw. "How is that possible? The Core was destroyed!"

Kael shook his head, voice low and steady. "He didn't need it. He's evolved — using remnants of PRIME. Whatever survived in him… he's no longer human in the same way we are."

47-B looked up, fear plain in his red-tinged eyes. "He… he can't catch us, right?"

Kael turned toward him, placing a hand gently on his shoulder. "Not if we stay sharp. But we can't underestimate him."

The comm panel beeped. Eris's fingers hovered over the controls. "He's not just chasing us — he's anticipating us. It's like he knows every possible escape route. He's using the remnants of the Array's network… linking to satellites, relay stations… every sensor in Dominion space is feeding him information."

Mira's face went pale. "He's omnipresent."

Kael clenched his fists, the faint pulse of molten energy under his armor responding to his rising fury. "Then we'll make him choose," he said. "We'll set the battlefield — force him into something he can't control."

Eris glanced at him. "You're thinking… a trap?"

Kael nodded. "Exactly. We lead him somewhere he can't predict. Somewhere we can fight on our terms. The Solace is fast, but we need leverage."

Mira crossed her arms, worry etched deep. "And the children? We can't risk them in a trap like that."

Kael's eyes softened. "We won't. They stay hidden until the last moment. Varek wants me — not them."

A sudden flash on the sensor panel made them all freeze.

Multiple energy spikes. Fast. Direct. Approaching.

"Buckled in," Eris muttered. "It's him. And he's closing in fast."

The Solace jolted as energy signatures slashed across space — remnants of corrupted PRIME discharged from Varek's body, like deadly hunting tendrils. The ship rocked under the force of each strike.

Kael gritted his teeth, pushing himself upright. His armor flickered violently, feeding off his will. "He's reckless. He thinks he can intimidate us. Let him."

Mira's rifle hummed as she scanned the void. "Kael… what now?"

Kael's crimson eyes burned brighter. "We fight. And this time… it ends differently."

Outside, the stars stretched cold and infinite. Varek's presence was a shadow in that void — relentless, unyielding, and hunting.

Inside the Solace, Kael Renn was preparing to meet him. Not as a pawn. Not as a conduit.

As a human.
