Chapter 2 - chapter 2: when light meets shadow

....

The mortal world shimmered beneath the dawn — dew glistening on leaves, mist curling over rivers like silver smoke. The sun had not yet risen, but its warmth pressed faintly against the horizon, impatient to break free.

Lian Yue stood on the hill outside her village, the crimson moon fading into pale grey. Her fingers brushed the cool grass, but her mind was elsewhere — in that dream she could no longer escape.

Each night she saw him.

A man with eyes like burning gold.

A voice that made the stars tremble.

She didn't know who he was — only that every time she woke, her heart hurt in a way she couldn't name.

As she walked back down the slope, the wind stirred around her ankles, whispering through her hair. She stopped.

The air had changed — warmer, thicker, alive.

Then the sky split.

A column of fire tore through the clouds, too bright for mortal eyes, and struck the earth in the forest beyond the hills. The ground quaked beneath her feet. She gasped, shielding her face from the rush of heat that followed.

From within the burning light, a shadow stepped forward.

---

High above, the Sun God had descended.

Li Yun emerged from the flame, his armor gleaming faintly even in the mortal haze. The divine fire that usually wreathed his form was suppressed — too much power, and the realm would burn.

He looked around, his gaze cool but curious. The mortal air was heavy, the world fragile. Yet there was a strange peace here — the kind his celestial palace could never hold.

"Your Majesty," came a soft voice. A phoenix spirit materialized beside him, her feathers flickering in and out of flame. "Should we begin the search?"

Li Yun nodded. "The Oracle said the Moon's light sleeps within this realm. I will find it myself."

He stepped forward — and the moment his foot touched earth, something shifted.

A pulse — faint, familiar — brushed against his soul.

Her presence.

---

Lian Yue reached the edge of the forest. The air smelled of smoke and something divine. The trees were blackened in a perfect circle, yet nothing burned.

In the center of the clearing stood a man.

His hair caught the faint light of dawn, strands of gold that gleamed like fire. His robe shimmered with the faint glow of embers. And when he turned —

Their eyes met.

Lian Yue's breath caught in her throat. Her heart stuttered, then raced. It was him. The man from her dreams.

Li Yun froze as well. The heartbeat he'd felt — the one echoing through time itself — was now standing before him.

For the first time in eons, the Sun hesitated.

She was mortal now — her power sealed, her memories gone. But her aura… her essence was unmistakable.

The Moon Goddess.

He took a step closer. "Who are you?"

Lian Yue blinked, struggling to find her voice. "I… I'm just a healer from Baiyan Village."

He stared at her, eyes narrowing slightly, as if searching for a lie.

But there was none — only confusion, and fear… and something softer.

He exhaled slowly. "No. You are not."

Before she could ask what he meant, a sharp cry pierced the air — a celestial arrow struck the ground near her feet, burning with blue flame.

Li Yun's expression darkened. "They found us already."

"Who?" she whispered.

He turned, summoning a blade of pure light from his palm. "The ones who wish to end the prophecy — before it begins again."

The sky above them roared, stars swirling in daylight.

The Sun God raised his sword. The Moon Goddess reached for his hand — though she didn't yet know why.

And as their fingers brushed, the heavens cracked open once more.
