Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – The Interface of Power

The morning air bit with a sharp chill. Frost clung to the ground, glittering in the pale sunlight that filtered through the gray Michigan clouds. Ethan sat on a fallen tree beside the ruins of what used to be a gas station, his breath fogging as he exhaled. His armor—obsidian plates laced with veins of faint blue light—reflected the dawn's glow like shards of frozen glass.

Joseph sat opposite him, tearing at a granola bar with his teeth, occasionally tossing crumbs to a squirrel bold enough to approach the pair.

"Never thought I'd miss microwaves this much," Joseph muttered, voice muffled by the food in his mouth. "We used to heat stuff in seconds. Now it's like—back to campfires and burnt hot dogs."

Ethan glanced up, lips twitching faintly. "You should be thankful you even have food."

"I am, but that doesn't mean I can't complain."

Ethan chuckled once—low, brief—and then his expression shifted. A faint shimmer pulsed in front of his eyes, the familiar translucent glow of his system interface flickering to life. He'd seen it many times by now, but this morning, he wanted to study it in detail. He raised his hand and focused.

Ethan's gaze lingered on the screen. He'd only leveled six times since this nightmare began, but the growth was undeniable. His body felt harder, faster—he could sense mana like a tangible current flowing through him.

Joseph tilted his head, watching him curiously. "Man, you're staring into space again. What's that thing look like, anyway? I've seen flashes of blue every time you mutter to yourself."

Ethan blinked, refocusing. "You don't know how to open yours?"

Joseph shrugged. "I've been winging it, bro. My sword hits things, they die, I get stronger. That's my system."

"Say 'Status,'" Ethan said flatly.

"What, like… just say it?"

"Yes."

Joseph raised a brow but grinned. "Alright, Status!"

A faint shimmer of light appeared before him. His eyes widened as the interface materialized.

"Holy crap, it worked!" he said, squinting at the floating text. "Dude, I got Strength 32! Look at me! That's at least… two more than I thought I had."

Ethan smirked faintly. "You have skill points too. You can assign them manually."

Joseph poked at the interface, his tongue poking from the corner of his mouth as he concentrated. "Ohhh—there's a 'confirm' button. I love how death and destruction still come with tooltips."

Ethan shook his head. "Be careful how you assign them. Strength boosts physical damage. Endurance helps you survive. Agility increases attack speed. Think before you—"

"Too late! Strength all the way, baby!"

A chime echoed, and Joseph flexed both arms. "I feel awesome! You see that? My sword arm just vibrated with power! Either that, or I'm dying."

Ethan sighed, though he couldn't hide the faint smirk tugging at his lips. "You're an idiot."

"I prefer 'strategically reckless.'"

They continued their journey north, toward a massive plume of smoke they'd seen rising hours earlier. The world was still shifting—mutating. Whole stretches of landscape shimmered with mana pulses, bending reality in ways that defied explanation.

As they walked through what used to be a quiet suburban neighborhood, the ground beneath them began to change. Grass withered, replaced by frost-laced soil that crunched underfoot. Ahead, an archway of jagged ice rose from the ground—its surface glimmering with runes that pulsed like veins.

Joseph whistled. "So… we just walk in?"

Ethan nodded slowly. "This is a dungeon. But not like before. It manifested here."

"Looks cold," Joseph muttered. "Guess that fits your whole aesthetic."

Ethan ignored the comment and stepped closer—when a sudden whistle cut through the air. He spun, sword half-drawn—only to see an arrow slam into a nearby frost crystal, cracking it.

"Whoa! Hold up!" a voice shouted from the treeline.

A man stepped into view, wearing mismatched leather armor, a green cloak, and a quiver strapped to his back. Beside him padded a massive gray wolf, its eyes glowing faintly with emerald light.

The newcomer raised a hand. "Didn't mean to startle you. Thought you were—well, one of them."

Joseph squinted. "Define 'them.' Because so far, 'them' includes undead, fire goats, and a car that tried to eat me."

The stranger grinned. "Fair point. Name's Dan. Beast Tamer, apparently. This here's Shadowfang."

The wolf growled softly but stayed close to Dan's side. Ethan lowered his weapon but kept his stance guarded.

"Beast Tamer?" he asked.

"Yeah," Dan said, rubbing the wolf's head. "I can bond with beasts, summon them from mana—stuff like that. I've been trying to figure it out, but it's all… weird. My skill list looks like someone's fever dream."

Joseph clapped him on the shoulder. "Welcome to the party, man! We're all screwed together."

Ethan frowned slightly. "We don't need—"

"Yes we do," Joseph cut in quickly. "He's got a dog. That already makes him ten times more useful than us. Plus, he can shoot stuff. And talk. He passes the vibe check."

Dan chuckled. "I'll take that as a compliment."

Ethan hesitated, then sighed. "Fine. But stay sharp. Once we step through that archway, there's no telling what's waiting."

Dan nodded, drawing an arrow. "You got it."

As they crossed the threshold, the world shifted. The frozen air thickened, and the landscape around them morphed into a vast glacial cavern. Ice pillars rose like cathedral spires, and strange crystalline creatures moved in the distance.

Ethan glanced at his party—Joseph with his sword blazing faintly with mana, Dan nocking an arrow, and the wolf growling low.

For the first time since the world changed, he didn't feel entirely alone.

He gripped his blade tighter. "Let's see what this dungeon has for us."

The frost beneath his boots cracked as they advanced deeper into the unknown.

The temperature dropped as soon as they stepped through the archway.

The air grew heavier, tinged with frost so cold it bit at their lungs.

Blue light shimmered from crystalline veins in the cavern walls, throwing fractured reflections across the ice like ghostly fire. The ground beneath them was uneven — half-frozen corpses locked in the glacier, faces twisted in terror just below the surface.

Joseph gave a low whistle. "Well, this isn't creepy at all. Totally fine. Love what they've done with the place. Real welcoming."

Dan glanced around, eyes scanning the icy expanse. "You feel that? The mana here's thick. It's… humming."

Ethan nodded slightly. "It's condensed. The dungeon is alive — shaping itself based on what power it was born from."

Joseph rubbed his arms. "Yeah, well, it's freezing. You sure this thing's not born from you?"

Ethan ignored him, kneeling briefly to touch the ice. Frost spread from his fingers, spider-webbing outward. His mana resonated with the dungeon's chill — it recognized him, responded to him. He stood, his eyes glowing faintly blue beneath his hood.

"Stay close," he said.

They moved through a narrow corridor that opened into a vast chamber, a frozen lake stretched across the floor. Strange shapes lurked beneath the surface — humanoid outlines drifting like shadows beneath glass.

Dan crouched near the edge, running his hand just above the ice. "Movement. Maybe ten… twelve of them. They're waiting."

Ethan nodded, scanning the shimmering surface. "Then we wake them up on our terms."

He raised his hand and murmured, "Raise Dead."

The runes on his armor pulsed as blue smoke coiled from the cracks in the ice. The shapes below twitched — then rose, one by one, through the frost. Skeletons clad in frozen shards and frostbitten armor pulled themselves free, frost flaking from their bones.

Joseph took a nervous step back. "Still not used to that, man. Every time you do that, I expect the Ghostbusters theme to start playing."

Ethan's voice was cold but amused. "Focus, Joseph."

The undead soldiers formed up around him, hollow eyes burning with spectral flame. Ethan raised his sword, the runes on the blade glowing like molten ice.

"Spread formation. Let's test them before they reach us."

Dan nocked an arrow, mana gathering along the shaft. "Shadowfang—flank left."

The wolf darted into the mist, a blur of gray and silver. A moment later, the ice cracked — one of the frozen figures surged upward, jagged limbs splitting the surface. It was humanoid, but its flesh was glassy ice, face split by a vertical maw.

"Contact!" Dan shouted.

Arrows sang, striking true. The creature staggered, but others began to rise — more and more — bursting from the frozen lake in a chorus of shattering ice.

Joseph stepped forward with a grin that was all bravado. "Alright, let's see how strong these bastards are!"

He charged, sword swinging with reckless confidence. His blade connected, cleaving one in half — the halves hit the ground, still twitching. "Okay! They're tough! Not impossible! Just gross!"

Another creature lunged at him from behind, claws flashing. Before Joseph could turn, spectral chains shot from Ethan's hand, wrapping around the creature's torso.

"Grasp of the Grave!"

The monster was yanked off its feet and slammed into the ice beside Joseph with a crack that echoed through the chamber.

"Thanks, boss!" Joseph yelled, spinning to finish it off.

Ethan said nothing — his focus was absolute, his every movement calculated. When one of the creatures lunged for Dan, he twisted his hand and released Soulrend, a pulse of necrotic frost bursting from his palm. The creature froze mid-lunge, its body fracturing into frozen shards.

Dan exhaled slowly, lowering his bow. "You weren't kidding about being strong."

"Stay focused," Ethan said, stepping forward as his undead soldiers advanced in a staggered line. "There are more."

The ground rumbled. The lake cracked open, splitting down the center. From the darkness below, a shape rose — massive, towering, easily fifteen feet tall. It was a golem of jagged ice, veins of blue mana pulsing through its body. Its face was a warped mask of crystal shards, and its roar shook the cavern.

Joseph blinked. "Oh. That's big."

Dan took a step back. "Bigger than I'm paid for."

"You're not paid at all," Joseph muttered.

"Exactly my point!"

Ethan's undead charged, but the golem swept its arm, smashing three to pieces in a single blow. Shards of bone and frost scattered across the ice. Ethan's eyes narrowed — and his tone dropped to a chilling calm.

"Fall back. I'll handle this."

Joseph blinked. "Wait, what—?!"

Ethan raised his sword high, mana flooding the runes along its length until they flared with glacial blue fire. The air around him froze solid, snow spiraling upward in a cyclone.

The golem swung. Ethan met the strike head-on, his blade flashing — the impact sent shockwaves through the chamber, the frost at their feet cracking like glass.

He murmured under his breath, voice like the echo of a tomb:

"Soulbreaker."

The blade erupted in necrotic frost, slicing through the golem's arm. It howled, stumbling backward, pieces of its body shattering with each movement. Ethan pressed forward — every swing precise, unrelenting, brutal.

The final blow cleaved straight through the creature's chest, freezing it solid before it shattered entirely.

Silence followed. Only the soft crunch of falling ice filled the air.

Joseph exhaled a shaky laugh. "You… just soloed a giant ice monster. I feel incredibly underqualified to be here."

Dan grinned. "Speak for yourself. That was the coolest thing I've ever seen."

Ethan wiped frost from his blade and sheathed it. His undead soldiers gathered, their eye flames dimming as they awaited further orders.

"Let's rest," he said simply. "Then we move deeper."

They made camp inside the frozen cavern, using flickering torches to keep the chill at bay. Joseph sprawled against a chunk of ice, staring up at the ceiling where light refracted like stars.

"You ever think about how weird this all is?" he asked. "One day we're normal people. Next thing I know, I'm hanging out with a Death Knight and a wolf whisperer, fighting frost zombies."

Dan laughed softly. "You say that like it's a bad thing."

Ethan sat a few feet away, silent, his eyes on his interface again. Another notification pulsed softly in front of him.

[Level Up: 7 → 8]

+3 Strength, +2 Endurance, +1 Willpower.

Skill Points: +2]

He stared at the flickering numbers, then slowly smiled — just a hint of satisfaction.

Joseph noticed. "You're smiling. That's new."

Ethan didn't look up. "We're getting stronger."

Joseph grinned, holding up a hand. "Hell yeah, we are."

Dan raised his flask. "To surviving."

Ethan looked up at the frost-covered ceiling. For the first time since the world fell apart, he let the smallest spark of warmth creep into his tone.

"To surviving," he echoed quietly.

And somewhere in the dark, the dungeon pulsed — alive, aware — as if listening.

The campfire flickered in uneven light, a faint orange glow fighting back against the deep blue frost of the cavern. Their makeshift fire pit hissed where embers touched ice, sending curls of steam into the frigid air.

Ethan sat with his back to a pillar of frozen stone, his helmet resting beside him, eyes focused on his interface. The others had settled into an uneasy rhythm — exhaustion and adrenaline fading into quiet curiosity.

Joseph poked at the fire with a half-burnt stick. "So, what now? We wait for more frost monsters to drop in and say hi?"

Dan chuckled from where he sat beside his wolf, Shadowfang, who had curled up protectively at his feet. "Nah. I think we earned a breather. And… maybe a chance to figure out what else we can do."

Joseph raised a brow. "What, like new tricks?"

"Exactly," Dan said, summoning his interface with a casual flick of his wrist. The blue holographic window shimmered into view. "I leveled up after that ice giant. Level 6 now. Looks like I got a few new things unlocked."

Ethan glanced over. "What did you gain?"

Dan squinted, reading through the glowing text. "Hmm. Looks like I can summon an additional beast now. It says— 'Beast Mastery: Rank II unlocked. You can now maintain two bonded creatures simultaneously.'"

Joseph whistled. "Two pets? What are you, a walking zoo?"

Dan grinned. "Don't tempt me. Let's see what happens."

He reached into his pack, pulling free a smooth obsidian stone that pulsed with green light. He pressed it against the ground, channeling mana through it. The cavern trembled softly, frost cracking outward in a circle.

A second creature materialized — smaller than Shadowfang, but lean and sleek. A spectral falcon formed from shimmering green light, its wings glowing faintly as it perched on Dan's shoulder, eyes like twin emeralds.

"Whoa…" Joseph murmured. "You got a ghost bird."

"It's called a Spirit Falcon," Dan said proudly. "Says it can scout, mark enemies, and amplify ranged attacks. Let's see what that means—oh wait, I've got something else."

He tapped the air again, opening his Skill Tree. "New ability: Piercing Gale Arrow.Deals heavy wind-elemental damage and ignores armor. Huh."

Joseph leaned back with a grin. "Man, you're out here turning into Legolas 2.0."

Dan laughed. "If Legolas had a ghost wolf and a spirit bird, maybe."

The falcon gave a soft screech, as if agreeing.

Ethan nodded, clearly impressed. "Good. Your abilities complement ours. You can control the battlefield while Joseph draws attention and I handle suppression."

Joseph snorted. "Draw attention? You mean tank hits until my bones freeze off?"

"That's one way to describe it," Ethan replied dryly.

Joseph groaned but opened his own interface anyway. The blue window reflected in his eyes. "Alright, let's see what the universe decided I deserve."

He scrolled through his stats.

[Level: 6 → 7]

+5 Strength, +2 Endurance

Skill Unlocked: Tremor Slash – A melee strike infused with raw force, causing a shockwave that damages enemies in front of the user.

Joseph's grin widened. "Now that's more like it! Tremor Slash—sounds badass!"

Dan smirked. "So what's the catch?"

"No catch," Joseph said proudly. "And get this—every time I level up, my stats go up automatically. So I've been dumping all my free points into Strength. Straight gains, baby."

Ethan's gaze lifted. "All of them?"

"Yep!"

Dan blinked. "Dude, that's insane."

"Insanely awesome," Joseph corrected, flexing his arm. "Look, if I hit something hard enough, maybe it'll explode. Problem solved."

Ethan sighed, rubbing his forehead. "Or your arm will."

"Then I'll hit it with the other one."

Dan laughed, the sound echoing softly through the cavern. "I like this guy."

Ethan almost smiled, though he hid it behind the glow of his interface. "Just don't let him near any fragile walls."

"Hey," Joseph said indignantly, "that one door deserved it."

The group chuckled — even Ethan, though he hid it well. For a brief moment, the cold didn't feel so biting.

Ethan finally closed his interface and leaned back, watching the flames. "We're adapting faster than I expected," he said quietly. "If this world keeps changing, we'll need every advantage we can get."

Dan nodded. "You think there are more dungeons like this out there?"

"There are," Ethan said. "And they're spreading. The world is reshaping itself — the more mana it absorbs, the more it mutates."

Joseph looked uneasy. "You mean like… cities turning into fire pits and forests sprouting in the middle of parking lots?"

"Exactly that," Ethan replied. "Every dungeon brings its own environment. Fire, forest, rot, storm—whatever element it's born from will rewrite reality around it."

Dan looked thoughtful. "Then each one will be different. Each one stronger."

Ethan nodded. "And each one we clear… we grow stronger too."

Silence fell again — but it wasn't an uncomfortable one. The three men sat together under the flickering light of the campfire, surrounded by ancient ice and sleeping monsters. The flames reflected in their eyes — the faint spark of human defiance in a world remade by chaos.

Joseph yawned and stretched. "Alright, I'm calling it. First watch goes to the guy with the ghost dog and bird. You're basically a wildlife camera."

Dan smirked. "Fine by me. But if anything sneaks up on us, I'm waking you first."

"Deal."

Ethan closed his eyes briefly, but his hand never left the hilt of his blade. His undead stood sentinel in the distance, unmoving, eyes glowing faintly blue in the dark.

As he drifted into shallow rest, the system flickered again — a soft pulse only he could see.

[New Dungeon Detected: Emberfall Zone – Fire Elemental Influence Expanding.]

[Proximity: 8.2 miles southeast.]

His eyes opened, the faintest smirk crossing his face.

Another challenge. Another chance to grow stronger.

He whispered to himself, barely above a breath.

"Let the frost spread"
