Chapter 1 - The Black Cat

The cat jumped straight at my face and clawed it brutally. My right eye went dark, and I couldn't move my body- My breath started to fade-

At least that is the last moment of disaster I faced that night. At that time, I was walking alone, in silence, I could barely hear cricket chirping. The lighting was really minimal, only cluster path lighting. On my left, I saw a shadow of a black cat, it came closer to me, walking with me, with no sound, just silence. It's the same cat as I walked three days ago, long and very dark fur, and glowing green on its eyes.

I usually talk about my anxiety to her, like the first day, I talked about my mother who is being fake all the time, she told me she loved my paintings. I've made my beautiful art about traffic lights with its own story and philosophy. She told me she's proud of me but in the morning, ashes came to my nose. I wondered what that burning smell was when I woke up. I realized it's my own painting, burned directly in front of my face in my room. Mom told me I will never be successful with that.

The second day, I talked about my dad, who's dead silent like a standing stone, his ears like piercing bend metal, and flat face as a centuries-old mummy. He never says agree or disagree, but his action is absolute, precisely the same as mom, just more silent than mom. But I always fell to that trap, betrayal by betrayal, denial, confrontation, and disagreement neglecting human respect and humanity. Both days, the cat never meowed at me, only looking at my face as it put an empathy for me. I think I only feel lonely and craving for attention, so I felt the cat has empathy for me. I can remember vividly its glowing eyes like it's listening to me deeply and offering some solution.

This time, it's our third day. The cat looks different, its eyes are sharper, more aggressive, and reminds me both of my mom and dad. The cat's fur suddenly stood up. It looked very alert, like it was ready to attack something. Its eyes were sharp and scary. I turned around because I was afraid something might be behind me, but I saw nothing. When I looked back, the cat was still in the same position, even more dangerous. It started to walk toward me slowly.

Then, for the first time, the cat meowed at me. Its voice was very loud and made me feel cold and afraid. Suddenly, it jumped at my face very fast. At that moment, I understood something. In my whole life, nothing ever stayed loyal to me. Everyone betrayed me — my mother, my father, people, and even animals. The cat wanted to hurt me, to scratch my face and my right eye. My life ended that day.

Instead, I woke up in the hospital right now; I moved to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror. I was stunned for a minute, realizing my right eye was glowing green, the same as that cat, and no scares on my face. Then my sister called me by my name, with a soft and pleasant tone of voice,

"Haira…" and for the last moment, Haira is not my name.
