Chapter 42 - True and False

"Of course, there is."

Lewis took off the monocle and put it into an exquisite wooden box: "We have discussed it with the Mayor and decided to hold a press conference tomorrow night."

"A press conference?" Lex was genuinely surprised, "What kind of press conference?"

The Miss Red-Hair, who had been silent, glanced at the seemingly tired Lewis, took over the topic, and responded: "It's a press conference about this murder case. We have already contacted reporters from several nearby Towns and asked them to release the news to the outside world in advance, conveying to people that we will announce the findings of the past few days at the press conference, including the most important diary."

"In addition, they will release a crucial piece of news. That is, Mr. Lex has already discovered the mastermind in Mrs. Paris's basement and knows his appearance."

"At that time, Mr. Lex will reveal the culprit's appearance at the press conference."

"So, during the coming period, we and the police in the Town will fully protect Mr. Lex. But at the press conference, personnel will be somewhat dispersed, and before attending, Mr. Lex will arrive at the venue in advance and spend time in the lounge."

After listening to Martha's narration, Lex generally understood that Lewis and his team wanted to force the culprit out and set a trap, planning to capture him in the lounge of the venue.

"If that's the case, I'd like to add some suggestions,"

Lex immersed himself in the matter and, from the perspective of a 'Hunter', offered some advice. They discussed in the hall, refining the plan.

It wasn't until close to noon that Lewis and the others bid farewell and left.

Sitting in the carriage provided by the Mayor, Lewis took out the wooden box containing the monocle and handed it to the profiler, Warren.

The shy-looking young man said in a not-so-bright voice: "How is it, Captain, is there a problem with that Young Master Lex?"

Lewis put on his black-rimmed glasses again and glanced at the wooden box in Warren's hand: "With the help of '3-0718', I conducted a second examination of him just now. His language and actions seem to be reserved, as if he's hiding something."

"However, on the crucial questions. For example, the parchment, and regarding Extraordinaries, he didn't lie. At least, I couldn't detect any signs of lying."

The pale-skinned Jeffrey moved to the opposite side of the window and said: "3-0718 corresponds to the Spectator Sequence. Wearing it, the Captain can gain the related abilities of this Sequence, allowing him to observe some unconscious body language of the other party and interpret them."

"If Lex were lying, it shouldn't escape this Seal."

Martha, who despite being a Seer didn't give off any mystical vibe, whistled at the remark: "Does that mean we can trust him? That's great, this young gentleman is both handsome and righteous, I like him very much."

Jeffrey cleared his throat and kindly reminded: "Martha, you're older than him."

The Miss Red-Hair said indignantly: "Jeffrey, mentioning a lady's age in front of her is very impolite."

"Besides, for people who truly love each other, age is not an issue at all."

Martha looked at Lewis, who was rubbing his forehead, and pointedly said: "Captain, don't you agree?"

Lewis looked up blankly: "Sorry, I was distracted just now. What were you talking about?"

Martha rolled her eyes and leaned back in her chair like a deflated balloon, no longer speaking.

After lunch, Lex reported to his parents that he would be assisting the police, then returned to his room.

He crossed his arms over his chest and paced back and forth in the room: "This morning, Lewis was clearly testing me, suspecting me."

"He mentioned beyonders, so he's suspecting that I might be a Beyonder?"

"Why would he make that connection? Is it that parchment?"

Lex slapped his head, realizing some things.

"I discovered the murder case at Paris's house, I personally reported it, but I didn't hand over the parchment. At the time, I was only worried about the evil seed taking root in the Town, so I used another identity to send it to St. Witt's Church."

"But I overlooked one thing: doing so would actually arouse suspicion. The act of sending the parchment to the Church precisely indicates that I can read the Hermes on it and know that it's an incantation to pray to an evil god."

"Lewis must have used this point to connect that I might have entered the mysterious world, that I might be a Beyonder, which is why he tested me this morning."

Lex gently patted his chest: "Fortunately, I didn't answer his questions directly or head-on. And those answers were a mix of truth and falsehood, and judging from Lewis's expression afterward, he should believe me now."

"This world is indeed very dangerous. One oversight could expose me. I need to be more careful in the future; let this be a lesson."

He glanced at the wall clock; it was twenty minutes until two in the afternoon.

Lewis had said that at two o'clock, they would move into the Baron's Mansion with a group of police officers to begin protection, ensuring that the culprit, having no other recourse, would have to choose to act in the press conference's lounge tomorrow night.

"After Lewis and his team arrive, I probably won't have a chance to summon the 'mystical book' before they catch the culprit."

Lex shrugged, feeling full of spirituality, so he raised both hands horizontally and chanted the incantation.

He wanted to know more about the Abraham Family and the Tudor Empire.

Tick!

The hands on the wall clock stopped moving, and the illusory tome landed in his hands. Lex opened the cover and saw the replies under the message board that he hadn't finished reading last time.

'ID 160809145813508: The Abraham Family ancestors were only one step away from a True God, but later the whole Family was cursed. What remains is not something you can know. The Solomon Empire once ruled the North Continent. You are not worthy of contacting hotpot base. And Abraham's status comes from himself, not any Emperor.'

This was the information he hadn't finished reading last time. Lex had already seen the first part, and a section of the content was censored afterward.

However, what is hotpot base again? I'm actually not worthy of knowing it. Is it because it's dangerous?

I remember an Observer mentioned 'cassava' last time, which also seemed to be a dangerous thing, and now there's hotpot base. This world is truly bizarre.

Lex continued to read.

'Aiyan is not speaking: Evil spirits shouldn't have characteristics, right? The Hunter pathway is too safe compared to other pathways. At most, you have to deal with some—'

'Blazing Eyed Garen: The ancestors of the Abraham Family were great nobles of the Solomon Empire, only one step away from becoming a god by completing the ritual, but unfortunately, they had no chance and were destined to return—'
