Chapter 3 - The Royal Threshold

The heavy iron-studded gates clanged shut behind them, sealing off the entrance to the inner district. Before them stretched a grand cobblestone thoroughfare lined with vibrant merchant stalls. Exotic fruits shivered with inner luminescence, fragrant spices spiraled into the air, and strange metallic trinkets hummed with faint magical energy.

Rin Me slowed her pace near a quiet side alley, slinging her satchel over her shoulder. "Well, guys, my house is just down this avenue. I need to head back and get started on my studies."

"Get home safe, Rin Me," Aeron said with a warm, encouraging smile.

Venimus stepped forward, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "Hey... when are we going to see each other again?"

A light blush dusted Rin Me's cheeks. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, glanced up at him, and murmured, "Soon." With a brief wave, she turned and darted down the lane.

The remaining group continued down the main street, their eyes darting across the breathtaking stalls.

"Look at those crystals," kaito whispered, staring in awe. "They look like they're practically glowing from the inside."

"The glowing, exotic fruits and fragrant spiced dishes in the market looked incredible, making Geotor's stomach rumble with hunger."

"Check out these dagger hilts," Venimus marveled, admiring a blacksmith's display. "The craftsmanship in this city is insane."

"Stay focused, everyone," Aeron cautioned, keeping a steady pace. "We're almost at the central approach."

Past the grand marketplace, the road angled upward toward a colossal set of double doors carved from dark polished wood and reinforced with brass. Flanking the entrance were two imposing sentries clad in full plate armor, carrying tall halberds.

"Hold up," Aeron said, raising a hand.

The guard on the left—a broad-chested soldier named Guard Captain Kaelen—squinted as they approached. A split second later, a grin broke across his scarred face. "Well, look who it is! Long time no see, Aeron. How've you been holding up, kid?"

"Can't complain, Kaelen!" Aeron chuckled, trading a firm handshake. "What about you?"

"Still standing post," Kaelen laughed, before his eyes traveled over the rest of the group. "What brings you to the high courtyard today? And... who are these strange-looking companions in odd clothing?"

"They're with me," Aeron explained smoothly. "We have urgent business that requires an audience with the King."

The second guard, a tall and rigid sentry named Guard Gareth, stepped into their path and shook his head. "I'm afraid that's impossible right now. His Majesty is currently locked in a council session with the high ministers."

Aeron sighed, pressing a hand to his forehead. "Ah, man... so getting in is going to be tough. Isn't there any way you two can help us out?"

Homura stepped up to the front, clasping her hands together and batting her eyelashes with a sweet, persuasive smile. "Please, guards? Just a small favor for us?"

Gareth shifted uncomfortably under her gaze, clearing his throat. "Look... it's not up to us. But wait here. I'll go request permission from the Guard Commander first. Step inside the outer courtyard for now."

As Gareth turned and disappeared through the side portal, the boys crowded together in the shade of the towering archway.

"Man, this place feels heavy," Kuro muttered, glancing nervously at the towering stone battlements. "Are we seriously about to pitch our situation to a literal king?"

"Just keep your mouth shut and let Aeron talk," Venimus warned softly. "One wrong word and we end up in a dungeon."

"I'm just trying to keep my heart from bursting out of my chest," another boy added, pulling nervously at his collar.

While they waited, Kaelen and Aeron chatted naturally, catching up on news around the district. A few minutes later, the heavy side door creaked open and Gareth returned.

"The Commander says the King is still tied up in his briefing," Gareth reported. "However, he's letting you wait in the royal gardens out back. Once His Majesty finishes, the Commander will present your request."

"That's a relief," Aeron said, breathing a sigh of sympathy. "Honestly, I was half-expecting that stubborn old man to reject us outright."

Homura smacked Aeron hard on the shoulder. "Hey! Watch your mouth!"

They were escorted through a sprawling archway into the grand gardens behind the palace. The sheer scale took the boys' breath away—cascading marble fountains, rare luminous flora, and lush emerald lawns stretched out as far as the eye could see.

"Whoa... this place is unreal," several of the boys breathed in unison.

Lounging near the central marble fountain was the Guard Commander himself—a battle-hardened veteran in his late fifties named Commander Brontes. He wore heavy brass pauldrons, possessed a thick silver beard, and was currently sloshing an open glass bottle of strong ale in his right hand, thoroughly intoxicated.

"Well, well! Look what the wind blew in!" Brontes slurred boisterously, taking a heavy swig from his bottle. "How're my favorite little troublemakers doing today?"

Aeron pinched the bridge of his nose. "Great... the old man is plastered again. We're fine, Commander."

Kuro recoiled half a step, whispering under his breath, "Ugh... that old geezer looks terrifying."

Homura's head snapped toward him, her eyes flaring with instant rage. Small tongues of flame danced across her knuckles. "That 'old geezer' happens to be my father, you idiot! Show some bloody respect!"

FOOSH!

"AHHH! FIRE! MY PANTS ARE ON FIRE!" Kuro shrieked as a flare ignited the seat of his trousers. Panicking, he bolted across the manicured lawn and took a flying leap headfirst into the fountain basin with a tremendous SPLASH!

Kuro resurfaced a second later, drenched from head to toe and shivering. "I'm sorry, Homura! I'm sorry, Commander!"

Homura hovered at the edge of the fountain, glaring down at him with a hovering sphere of fire hovering over her palm.

Kuro swallowed hard, splashing backward. "I-I mean... I'm so sorry, Uncle! Is... is everything cool now?"

Hono hastily rushed forward, bowing awkwardly toward the drenched Commander to defuse the chaotic scene. "Homura's father! Good day, Father!... I mean—oh, sorry, Uncle!"

Homura snorted, snuffing out the flame with a flick of her wrist. "Yeah, both of you sit down and shut up."

Aeron turned back to the Commander, trying to steer the conversation back on track. "So, when does the council meeting actually finish?"

"Who knows?" Brontes hiccuped, wiping his beard with his sleeve. "Should be wrapping up right about now."

He reached into his tunic, pulled out a dark crystal communication stone—similar to the device Homura carried—and tapped its surface. "Hey. Is the meeting over yet?"

"It wrapped up a moment ago," a deep, resonant voice responded through the crystal's magic speaker. It belonged to General Valerius, the 34-year-old High Commander and chief strategist to the realm—a man whose very voice carried an imposing weight. "What is it, Brontes?"

"Aeron's here at the gates with a group of strange kids," Brontes grunted. "Claims he needs an urgent word with His Majesty."

"On what specific business?" Valerius demanded coldly.

"Beats me," Brontes muttered, shoving the crystal toward Aeron. "Here, kid. Explain it yourself."

Aeron caught the device, swallowing the lump in his throat. "General Valerius... it's a sensitive matter. I can't break protocol by discussing it over an open frequency."

A tense silence lingered over the line for several seconds.

"...Very well. Stand by while I clear this with His Majesty." The connection cut off.

While they waited, Commander Brontes looked over at his daughter, his stern features melting into a warm, silly grin. "Hey there, my little girl... how's my sweet princess holding up?"

Homura's face flushed red with embarrassment as the other boys tried not to snicker. "Dad, stop calling me that! I'm not a little girl anymore... but I'm doing fine."

A moment later, the communication stone chimed. Aeron flicked it open.

"The King has granted your request," Valerius announced sternly. "You have ten minutes. Do not waste his time."

Guided through a set of towering double doors, the six boys were ushered directly into the throne room.

The architectural magnificence of the hall rendered them speechless—towering marble pillars wrapped in gold trim, stained-glass vaulted ceilings, and majestic banners bearing the royal crest hanging from the walls.

Seated upon a massive carved throne at the far end of the hall was King Aurelius. At 47 years old, the monarch exuded an aura of calm wisdom and raw power, his sharp brown eyes locking onto the group the moment they crossed the threshold.

Flanking the throne to the left stood General Valerius. Towering, broad-shouldered, and draped in ornate dark plate armor, the High Commander projected a suffocating military aura that made the air in the room feel heavy to breathe.

All six boys froze in the center of the grand aisle, completely humbled by the gravity of the room...
