Chapter 12 - The Brother Beneath the Veil

⚔️ Chapter 10.5:

The sky above the fractured continent of Arkenfall was a tapestry of wounds — streaks of violet clouds and dark silver lightning dancing over the broken horizon. Where once oceans met the land, now only void remained — a gaping scar that pulsed faintly with dying Ether.

There, on the edge of the abyss, a single figure stood.

Shinjiro Ryoku.

His long coat, black as drowned silk, fluttered against the storm wind. Silver threads ran along its seams — not for decoration, but for binding — each strand pulsing faintly with the light of restrained spirits. His eyes, once warm and brown, now shimmered with a deep crimson hue. Beneath them were faint, luminescent scars — marks that pulsed with the rhythm of something inhuman.

He stared into the void as though it were a mirror.

Below him, the ground was covered in cracked obsidian — a field of petrified corpses frozen mid-scream, their souls sealed by the ritual he himself had performed. The air reeked of burned Ether and the metallic scent of rain that never fell.

Behind him, a voice spoke — smooth, distorted, and far too calm to belong to anything human.

"You hesitate again, Shinjiro Ryoku."

He did not turn. "You speak as though hesitation is weakness."

The voice chuckled — a sound like wind scraping across bone. "You were born to chains. I am merely teaching you how to break them."

From the darkness, it emerged — a spirit without form, wrapped in flowing shadows that bent the light around it. Its presence distorted the very air, pulling ripples of Ether through the cracks in the earth.

This was Nirvaleth — the entity Shinjiro had bound himself to years ago, when the Council declared him dead. A Tsukaima that had once been divine — before it fell, before its name was erased from every text in the world.

Shinjiro exhaled slowly, crimson mist spilling from his mouth as though his breath itself had become Ether. "Chains serve purpose. They hold together what would otherwise collapse."

"And yet you broke yours."

He finally turned, meeting the shadow's gaze — though it had no eyes. "Not for power," he said quietly. "For truth."

The spirit's laughter rippled through the air. "Truth? You sought truth the way mortals seek fire — until it burned you hollow."

Shinjiro's hand drifted toward the hilt of the weapon at his side. It wasn't a sword in any human sense — it was an instrument of binding, forged from mirrorstone and spirit bone, its blade shifting between solid and transparent. Along its length were inscriptions — runes in a dead language, glowing faintly with red light.

"I saw what lies beneath," he said. "Beneath the Veil. Beneath the prayers. Beneath the lies they built to keep the world blind."

The wind picked up, scattering ash through the air like black snow.

"The Cursed Spirit?" Nirvaleth asked softly.

Shinjiro nodded. "It was never destroyed. Only divided. Fragmented into pieces — sealed within chosen bloodlines."

"And yours?"

He looked down at his hand — the faint shimmer of Ether tracing his veins. "Mine carries one fragment. My brother carries another."

A long silence followed. The storm above roared, lightning tearing the clouds apart in veins of gold.

Nirvaleth circled him like smoke given purpose. "Then the prophecy begins to awaken. The two hearts… the blood of the moon… the chains reborn."

"He doesn't know yet," Shinjiro said, his voice softening for the first time. "He still dreams of the altar, of the blood, of that night when the first Yorimashi fell. The same dream I once had."

"And you would guide him?"

"No." His expression hardened, eyes glinting beneath the hooded light. "I would test him."

He lifted his gaze to the storm. "If he is weak, the world ends with him. But if he is strong enough to survive what I've seen…"

He paused. The silence stretched, heavy as stone.

"Then he will unmake the world — and build what I could not."

The spirit hummed, pleased. "You play the role of both architect and ruin, Shinjiro Ryoku. How human of you."

Shinjiro's lips twitched into a faint, humorless smile. "Humanity is a curse I've learned to wear well."

He stepped forward, standing at the very brink of the abyss. From the edge, he could see faint glimmers far below — remnants of the ancient seals that once held the Veil in place. They pulsed weakly, dying with each passing day.

He raised his hand, and the air obeyed. Ether rose in spirals around his fingers, wrapping the blade in a cocoon of red light.

"Blood remembers," he whispered.

The same words the whisper had spoken to Kairu beneath the moon.

As the light grew brighter, the shadows behind him began to move — dozens, then hundreds of ghostly forms emerging from the ground. Former Yorimashi, long dead, bound by Shinjiro's will. Their eyes glowed faintly with obedience.

He turned to them, his cloak snapping in the wind. "The time of silence is over," he said. "The Council has forgotten why we were born. They sealed what they feared — but fear is the seed of truth."

The ghostly army bowed as one, their chains clattering softly against the stone.

"Prepare the sanctum. The Veil will fracture soon. And when it does—" He paused, eyes flicking toward the sky, where the moon's lower edge burned faintly red.

"—the world will remember my brother's name."

Lightning split the sky. The earth trembled.

The spirits howled in unison, their voices merging with the storm until the air itself sang with chaos.

And in the heart of that darkness, Shinjiro Ryoku smiled — a slow, knowing smile — the kind that belonged to a man who had already seen the end, and accepted it.

The wind whispered around him, carrying the same words that haunted Kairu's dreams.

"When the moon bleeds again, the chains will break."
