Chapter 37 - The Ghost Trail

The air in the Aether studio control room was thick with the residue of their collective exhaustion and personal triumph. Jax Ryland had just finished the final brutal vocal tracks for "The Shadow Heir." The producer was now digitally sending the final mastered files to Zenith Publishing for the crucial pre-sale launch.

Jax left the studio feeling the familiar, cold satisfaction of a hunt. The creative phase was over. The tactical phase of his personal hunt for Aria Vance could now begin in earnest.

Jax kept his secure line open only for Marcus Sam, the investigator.

Later that morning, Marcus was already moving. He had secured the first layer of false information. He ran surveillance on Talia Hayes to establish her patterns, confirming her persona as a high-functioning executive with a known history as an Aether fan.

Marcus then focused on the critical lead: Aria Vance's injury. He tracked the sophisticated ghost trail Elias Vance had planted, leading him to a private physical therapy clinic known for its celebrity discretion. He received fabricated appointments and prescription refills linked to a woman matching Aria's description, claiming a severe injury. The address pointed to a secluded safe house upstate.

Marcus immediately reported back to Jax on the secure line.

The asset is injured, Jax. Severe. She's hiding upstate in a highly controlled environment, likely for long-term recovery. Vance Global is running deep cover, using fake medical files to mask the location. The injury explains the remote operations.

Jax felt a surge of triumph mixed with a strange, possessive concern. Injured. He believed he had found the weakness.

"Good work, Marcus. Focus all resources on confirming the upstate location. I want photographs. I want a timeline."

Elias Vance, CEO of Vance Global, had just concluded a high-level meeting with Mr. Han, CEO of a massive Asian logistics firm. They had successfully finalized a high-value contract for global asset security.

After Mr. Han departed, satisfied with Vance Global's absolute discretion, Elias returned to his private, glass-walled office. He was reviewing the security details of his new contract when his secretary, Ms. Chen, entered the room, looking hesitant.

"Mr. Vance, I apologize for the intrusion, Ms. Chen said quietly. But there is a Ms. Serena Voss in the reception area. She is highly persistent. She claims the visit is urgent and related to a new film promotion and asset security planning.

Elias frowned. Serena Voss was the rising actress he had spent one night with months ago.

"She didn't attempt to schedule?" Elias asked, his tone flat.

"She used her status to bypass the executive assistant and insisted on speaking only to the CEO," Ms. Chen confirmed. "She said she needs absolute, non-disclosure security planning for a project in Southeast Asia, and she believes only Vance Global can handle it."

Elias realized her motive. Serena was here to leverage their brief connection. She wanted a fast-track meeting to hire his ultra-secure firm for her rising celebrity life.

"Ms. Chen, Elias instructed, his voice firm. Inform Ms. Voss that she will need to make an official appointment through my executive assistant. Vance Global does not facilitate personal visits during high-level corporate negotiations. Her security needs will be handled by our New York Director, following strict protocol.

The interruption confirmed Elias's vulnerability. Even a single night of passion had created a professional blind spot. He was reminded, yet again, that he and Aria could never afford such normal human connections.

In her lavish New York penthouse, Soverkis Volkov began her highly structured investigation into Vance Global. Unlike Jax, she did not rely on impulsive rage or external PIs. She deployed the full resources of Volkov Global Group's internal intelligence division.

She sat in front of a massive monitor, reviewing the comprehensive dossier on Vance Global and its leadership. Her focus was on finding a corporate weakness that Chloe Thorne could exploit.

"Analyze the financial stability of Vance Global," Soverkis commanded her chief analyst over a private line to Milan. "I want to know if their profits rely heavily on the new, high-visibility security contract with Zenith Publishing."

The report confirmed Vance Global was immensely stable; its profits are diversified globally across various sectors. The Zenith contract, while large, was not the linchpin.

"Vance Global is an impenetrable fortress, Madam CEO," the analyst reported. It is entirely stable. We cannot target them financially without causing a global market collapse.

Soverkis smiled, with a cold, focused expression. Good. Then our target remains Aria Vance. She is the only exposed human element. Analyze the contract details for her specific operational mandates. Where is her vulnerability?

The analyst presented the next layer of data. Aria Vance is listed as a major shareholder and Commander of Operations. She is the strategic mind. She appears to be the one element responsible for securing the Eclipse Tour.

Soverkis leaned back, reviewing the information. Vance Global could not be bought or broken. This meant her attack had to be entirely personal, aiming to discredit the individual rather than the corporation.

"Aria Vance is Jax Ryland's shield," Soverkis mused. "We do not attack the shield; we attack its integrity."

Soverkis formulated her plan. She would attempt one final, strategic, high-level corporate maneuver: a direct offer to Elias Vance, CEO of Vance Global. This move was not expected to succeed, but it would confirm Vance Global's utter commitment to the Zenith contract.

She picked up her phone and dialed the corporate line for Vance Global.

Minutes later, Elias Vance was back in his office after directing Ms. Chen to handle the Serena Voss situation. He received the secure incoming call. The caller ID simply displayed: Volkov Global.

Elias answered, his voice devoid of emotion. Vance Global. Elias Vance speaking.

"Mr. Vance, this is Soverkis Volkov, the voice on the other end was melodious and commanding. I understand we are rivals in several global markets. I am currently launching a significant strategic acquisition targeting Zenith Publishing. I would like to offer Vance Global a substantial contract to manage the security of my newly acquired assets. This would require you to immediately terminate your current contract with Zenith.

Elias's face remained impassive, but his internal temperature dropped. This was a direct, corporate bribe.

"Ms. Volkov, Elias replied, his voice firm and final. Our commitment to Zenith Publishing is non-negotiable. Our contractual obligations are absolute. Vance Global does not terminate existing agreements, especially when dealing with high-profile national security assets. We decline your offer. Do not contact us again regarding this matter."

Elias hung up the phone without waiting for a reply. He immediately sent a brief message to Aria: Volkov initiated contact. Denied. The commitment is confirmed.

Soverkis Volkov now had her answer: Vance Global was immovable. Her only path was the personal attack on Aria, in alliance with Chloe.

In her secret apartment, Aria Vance was reviewing the architectural plans for her design studio. She felt the low, constant hum of the threat from Jax, but she was successfully evading him. She was preparing to build her new life.

Aria then opened the Valkyrie game on her secure laptop, seeking the only true solace she allowed herself. She found MoodMaker online, and a message was waiting.

MoodMaker: Hey Valkyrie. Rough day in the studio. Just laid down the final vocals for 'The Shadow Heir.' We all sound wrecked. Need a distraction.

Aria sat back, the realization hitting her with a silent, internal shockwave.

MoodMaker was Nick Aliyev, the drummer for Aether. She knew this. The gamertag was a known fact within the small security circle. But the weight of that truth had never truly settled until now.

He's not just a guy. He's one of the four. He's one of the clients.

She was playing intense, vulnerable mind games with one of the men whose security she was secretly managing, and whose lead singer she was actively running from. In the secure, anonymous digital world, she had built a connection with the enemy's ally, sharing a strategic bond with Nick, the one person who could innocently give Jax Ryland every piece of information he needed to find her. The realization was thrilling, terrifying, and deeply complex.

Aria thought: I have to maintain the friendship. He is the window to the interior of Aether. But I cannot let him know the truth.

Aria: The digital world is always safer. Ready to run the North Sector sweep? The perimeter is failing.

She typed, her fingers steady despite the chaos in her mind.

Jax, meanwhile, was back at his penthouse, looking at the city lights. He had a triumphant feeling of control, believing Marcus Sam was closing in on the injured Aria Vance upstate. He had no idea that the woman he was hunting was currently safe, relaxed, and sharing a secure, digital perimeter with his own bandmate, mere miles away.

The irony was crushing: Jax had paid a premium to chase a ghost, while the real Aria Vance was right under his nose, enjoying the safety of his band's inner circle. The stage was now set for the ultimate collision.
