Skye had no idea what words could possibly express her feelings at this moment.
Ever since joining the Rising Tide, she had been trying to use her hacking skills to uncover her own origins, but she'd gained nothing.
And now—she had finally touched a fragment of the world's truth.
Skye began trying to trace the email's source, but to her astonishment, she found no trace at all.
The sender was a hacker whose skill far surpassed her own!
Realizing this, Skye immediately began verifying the authenticity of the email's contents.
Although some unseen hand had been erasing information across the internet, she still found clues. The hammer that had appeared in Mexico that day had been seen by many, all of whom confirmed they couldn't lift it. And at the site of the chaos, there were indeed obvious signs of battle. Everything mentioned in the email was real!
Excited, she sent a message to her first mentor in computing—who was also her ex-boyfriend.
"Miles, I think I've found a clue about my past."
"Really? How did you find it?"
"You won't believe this." Skye sent the email to her ex-boyfriend using Rising Tide's encryption algorithm. "I think this is the truth our organization has been searching for all along. S.H.I.E.L.D.—they've concealed too much. We have to expose this to the public."
Though the Rising Tide was a relatively loose hacker collective, their core belief was information equality.
They believed that knowing the truth was the right—and the freedom—of every citizen in the world.
"My God!" Miles called her immediately, sounding almost incoherent. "How did you find this? Who is this 'Zero'? Have aliens already invaded Earth?"
"That's not important!" Skye shouted. "Whoever 'Zero' is, I think he's absolutely right. We have the right to know the truth. And if everyone unites, they'll have no choice but to tell us!"
"Calm down—just calm down. I'll tell the others in the organization first."
Miles knew exactly what Skye wanted to do—but what he thought of next was something else entirely: he was practically broke.
After hanging up, he paced back and forth in his room before finally sitting down at his computer. He hacked into the networks of dozens of major newspaper editors, leaking small bits of information. He had to make some money before Skye went public with everything herself.
The speed at which events unfolded exceeded even Shen He's expectations.
Because at around three or four in the morning, he was jolted awake by Fury calling him repeatedly.
"Was this you? Exposing S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Asgardians to the entire world! Do you have any idea I was this close to being fired by the World Security Council!?" Fury was practically shouting.
"Wouldn't getting fired be better?" Shen He rubbed his sleepy eyes. "S.H.I.E.L.D. is already Hydra's bureau anyway. At least it won't get destroyed in your hands."
"You should've warned me beforehand!!" Fury was furious—truly furious.
"Director Fury," Shen He said, a bit more firmly, "I don't know if you've heard this before, but trust goes both ways. You've never trusted us—so why should we trust you? If you don't want to help, then stop holding us back. Even without you, Earth will be just fine."
On the other end of the line, there was a long silence.
Cunning old Fury would never truly lose control of his emotions. Acting like this was only a negotiation tactic.
But it was obvious: they couldn't afford to turn against Shen He—not now. Yet Shen He could discard them effortlessly. It wasn't a fair balance.
"What's your next move?" Fury asked in a low voice. "Every newspaper, magazine, website— even television—all global media are reporting on aliens and S.H.I.E.L.D. Where did you even find such a group of hackers? You even managed to clear Tony of suspicion."
Fury had every reason to believe Tony was involved—the World Security Council's first suspect had been Tony.
After all, Tony had the ability to break S.H.I.E.L.D.'s information control with ease. But after investigation, it turned out that the information was being spread by elite hackers from around the world.
"How could I ever set up a friend? As for the next step…" Shen He glanced at the clock on his nightstand. "My next step is to keep sleeping. Director Fury, you can't hide the alien stuff for long. This time Asgard can be framed as friendly forces—but next time, who knows."
"What exactly do you know?" Fury took a deep breath. "Tony is setting up a factory to mass-produce Iron Man suits. Who are our enemies?"
"I only know what I'm supposed to know… I'm hanging up. Until I wake up naturally, my phone stays off."
Shen He finished speaking and hung up before Fury could reply, then told Jarvis to block all incoming communications. He pulled the covers over his head and went back to sleep.
Getting woken up in the middle of the night—he was already being very polite by not cursing.
In the end, Shen He still didn't get his wish of sleeping until he woke naturally.
Because he was awakened by Jeanne's gentle voice. But when he opened his eyes and saw that saintly face, Shen He immediately felt that the world was beautiful again, and that today would be another lucky day.
"Good morning, Jeanne."
"Good morning, Master." Jeanne greeted him with a bright morning smile. "A guest has been waiting for quite some time. Master should probably get ready soon."
"A guest?" Shen He sat up, yawning. "Jarvis, who's here?"
"Sir, it is Agent Coulson. He has been waiting for forty-two minutes."
Coulson… Fury really was clever.
Though both were agents, Coulson was the "village chief of the starter town"—smooth, diplomatic, moving with ease among various heroes. Most importantly, he always wore a friendly smile. Compared to Fury's bald, stern glare, Coulson was infinitely more pleasant.
"Um… Jeanne?" Shen He called softly.
"Mm? What does Master require?"
"Well, our relationship is very good and all, but shouldn't you step out for a moment at times like this?" Shen He said bluntly. Then he added, "I don't mind, but I'm worried you'll get embarrassed. After all…"
After all, as a healthy young man—waking up in the morning always came with… certain conditions.
Jeanne fell silent for a moment, her face turning bright red, then she stood up and practically fled the room.
What a wonderful expression.
Satisfied, Shen He got up and dressed, then had Jarvis save the footage from moments earlier and send it to his phone. If he ever returned to his original world, he wondered how many people he could make jealous to death.
