Chapter 54 - A Hero’s Tribute

How great is Captain America's reputation in this country?

The truth proved that as the government's most heavily promoted war hero, no one could truly predict just how immense Captain America's prestige was.

From the history taught in textbooks, to the exhibitions in memorial halls across the nation, then to the legendary tale of a frail young man who became strong and ultimately sacrificed himself—his story was the quintessential hero's legend.

Seventy years of peace had allowed Captain America's renown to reach its absolute peak.

And so, a sweeping, nationwide movement began.

First, many elderly veterans stepped forward—some pushed in wheelchairs, others carried from their hospital beds to the streets.

Then even more retired soldiers were moved to join them.

Then came schoolteachers, students…

More and more people flooded the streets. They held up all kinds of signs in front of government buildings—some shouting loudly, some sitting silently, and some singing the national anthem over and over.

A website titled "Give Our Hero Back to Us" was created, and within a short time it spread across the entire world. Countless people uploaded historical photos, albums, documents, and all kinds of material, voluntarily sharing the hero's deeds. More and more people took part—not just those familiar with Captain America's story.

The reason was simple:Heroes are the kind of existence people long for.

Was Tony Stark a hero?

To most people, he was currently nothing more than a billionaire who liked to amuse himself.

But in those bloody chapters of history, Captain America shone like a beacon of hope—using courage, resilience, and sacrifice to ignite hope in countless people trapped in despair. He was the true symbol of a hero.

[He sacrificed himself for us once. Now it's our turn to do something for him.]

This sentence was placed prominently on the website, urging more and more people to stand up.

"I really wish the Captain could see all this."

Coulson stared at the holographic display, emotions flickering in his eyes.

"He'll see it…"

Shen He rubbed his eyes, looking a little worn out.

Night had already fallen. He had spent nearly the entire day dealing with everything happening online. JARVIS wasn't omnipotent, so much of the work had to be done subtly, behind the scenes.

"Mr. Shen," Coulson called out—but suddenly paused, hesitating as if uncertain whether to speak.

"If you have something to say, just say it."

"It's just…" Coulson took a deep breath. "I don't know what Hydra has done while hiding inside us all these years. Maybe S.H.I.E.L.D. really has become a villainous organization. But many of my colleagues—many people—truly believed we were protecting humanity, protecting the world. Many of them died for that belief. So…"

"So their sacrifices shouldn't be erased, right?" Shen He finished for him, sighing but saying no more.

This was a question not difficult to answer.

A person with good intentions may still commit actions that harm others.

From a materialist perspective, wrong deeds remain wrong regardless of intention.

"I'm sorry, Coulson." Shen He finally shook his head. "I've looked into some of the things you've done. Forget everything else—what about the CH315 drug used on agents who had already died? Do you think that was the right thing to do? Those people were pulled back from death under the banner of salvation, only to suffer unbearable agony."

"…That should be top-level classified…" Cold sweat formed on Coulson's forehead.

He had participated in that experiment. Six dead agents were selected.

They were revived—yet forced to endure unimaginable torment, and had their memories altered afterward.

He had always believed he was doing the right thing. That although those who should have died forgot the truth of their pasts, at least they could live ordinary, happy lives.

"I don't agree with that approach." Shen He stared directly into Coulson's eyes. "And you know very well—their own will was to die. If someday someone forced that kind of 'kindness' onto you, how would you feel? In my view, wrong actions remain wrong. Being forgiven just because the intent was good… that's something only God would do."

"Shen He!" Ryougi Shiki suddenly called his name—not too softly, not too harshly.

"Mm?"

Shen He turned in confusion—and saw Jeanne, seated beside him, head lowered, hands tightly clenched upon her knees.

Crap… he had completely forgotten about the saint whose hands were also stained with blood.

"Jeanne, um…" Shen He leaned forward awkwardly, "Jeanne is totally different, you know? Look, you achieved incredible things as a saint. Even Steve can't compare to you. And besides, blood spilled on the battlefield—can you really call that sin? That's honor."

"Master."

Jeanne gently took Shen He's hand, a faint trace of helplessness in her expression.

"I'm not any sort of saint. And you're right—good intentions don't erase wrongdoing. Even when I was finally burned at the stake, I never regretted what I had done."

She hadn't been thinking of herself at all—only of Gilles, who had descended into madness after her death and slaughtered over three hundred children. That sin, like her own, was something no reason or excuse could ever truly absolve.

"But Jeanne… how should I put this…"Shen He suddenly found himself at a loss for words. In the end, he simply looked into her beautiful eyes.

"In my heart, you are without a doubt a saint. I don't mean the Jeanne from history—I mean the one standing right in front of me."

"Th-this… Thank you, Master."

Jeanne's face flushed crimson. She saw something in Shen He's eyes—something she couldn't quite understand.

"What's there to thank?" Shen He let out a small breath of relief. "Not to mention I—"

He abruptly stopped.

Because how was he supposed to explain it? He couldn't exactly say, I liked you even when you were just a character on paper, crafted by storytelling.

And what kind of emotion was that, anyway? Shen He didn't fully understand it himself.

But Jeanne clearly misunderstood something. Her face was bright red, her fingers twisting the fabric of her clothing, her entire posture tense and flustered.

"All right, Coulson. Time to move on to the next phase."Shen He sat back in his seat, abandoning any attempt to explain."Our hero and our audience are all in place. It's time for the villain to enter the stage. I want you to gather a few of your colleagues—and then take Lelouch to meet them."
