Chapter 20 - The Hunting Invitation

The morning sun bathed Alex's courtyard in a warm, golden light. The gentle rustle of leaves mingled with Louis's laughter as he chased after a small wooden hoop, giggling uncontrollably. Kael leaned against the stone railing, watching the scene with a faint smile, while Alex carefully guided Louis's tiny hands.

"It's almost like you've created your own little world here," Kael remarked, his eyes softening.

Alex chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from Louis's forehead. "A world where mischief is encouraged, but manners are taught."

Their peaceful moment was interrupted by the familiar echo of footsteps. Sir Luke Anderson approached, his presence calm yet commanding, carrying the air of someone whose advice Alex valued as much as any parent's. In his hands was a folded envelope sealed with deep crimson wax.

"Master Alex," Sir Luke said, bowing slightly, "a letter has just arrived. The seal… it bears the insignia of the Dukedom of Havana. I thought you might like me to present it personally."

Alex took the envelope, noting the weight and elegance of the seal. Breaking it carefully, he unfolded the letter. His eyes scanned the finely penned words, and a small, intrigued smile curved his lips.

"It's from Riven," Alex said, glancing at Kael. "He's inviting me to a hunting game."

Kael's brows rose. "Riven? The Riven? Has he… personally invited you?" There was a spark of curiosity in his tone, but it was accompanied by genuine admiration rather than envy.

Sir Luke's gaze was steady, thoughtful. "An invitation from someone like Riven is not given lightly. You'll need both strategy and composure. And perhaps… a trusted ally by your side." His glance toward Kael was subtle but approving, acknowledging the boy's loyalty and role.

Alex nodded. "Yes. It seems he's hosting it himself. There will be prominent young nobles from the dukedoms, and even members of the royal family, including the Crown Prince."

Kael's expression softened, a hint of awe in his eyes. "Not surprising," he said after a moment. "Someone with your… ability to make people comfortable, to draw them in without effort… it makes sense that Riven would seek your acquaintance."

Alex smiled, folding the letter neatly. "I hadn't expected it either. But I thought you'd appreciate knowing."

Louis clapped his small hands, oblivious to the conversation but adding warmth to the courtyard. Alex ruffled the boy's hair and laughed, then turned back to Kael. "I'll need a partner for strategy… not just for the game, but for navigating the subtleties of this event."

Kael's smirk widened. "Consider me your shield and advisor. You know I won't let you walk into trouble unprepared."

Sir Luke's lips curved into a faint, approving smile. "I trust both of you will handle yourselves wisely. But remember, vigilance is as important as skill."

Alex's smile deepened, eyes reflecting trust and gratitude. "I know."

In that quiet moment, amid sunlight and laughter, the foundation of loyalty, mentorship, and budding alliances was reaffirmed—between Alex, Kael, and Louis, and soon, between Alex and Riven, whose invitation promised both challenge and opportunity.
