Chapter 11: Training Montage and System Grind
Weeks blurred into rhythm. Wake up, breakfast with Tony when he remembered to eat, training with Happy, secret System grinding, dinner, sleep. Ben's life had structure for the first time since transmigrating, and the Safe Haven Bonus made every hour of practice count.
The mansion felt less like a movie set and more like home with each passing day. His room overlooked the Pacific, the waves a constant soundtrack to his new life. The closet held clothes that actually fit, the bathroom had unlimited hot water, and the bed was softer than anything he'd experienced in either lifetime.
But comfort bred its own dangers. Complacency. The feeling that maybe, just maybe, he could relax.
"Never relax in the Marvel universe," his adult mind reminded him. "This is just the calm before the storm."
Happy's training sessions became increasingly absurd as Ben tried to hide his abilities while still improving. The poor man's confusion grew with each passing day.
"Okay, kid, dodge this punch—not that fast! Where did—how did you end up behind me?"
Ben played it off as luck, but his Enhanced Reflexes at Level 28 made "accidents" look like choreography. Every movement was calculated, precise, impossible for a normal ten-year-old. He'd start to dodge with perfect form, then catch himself and overcorrect into stumbling.
"I'm clumsy!" he'd say, internally cringing at the performance.
Happy started documenting the weirdness in a notebook he thought Ben couldn't see. "Kid 'trips' into perfect rolls. 'Randomly' catches things without looking. 'Somehow' always knows when I'm about to strike."
The culmination came during a reaction test. Happy threw a practice knife—rubber, but weighted correctly—to gauge Ben's response time. Hawkeye's Aim at Level 35 made him instinctively catch and return-throw it, hitting Happy's training mitt dead center.
Happy just stood there, staring. "I didn't tell you to throw it back."
"Uh... initiative?"
That night, Ben's Enhanced Hearing caught Happy talking to Tony in the workshop.
"Your kid's either the clumsiest genius or the luckiest idiot I've ever trained."
Tony, welding something on the Mark III, didn't look up. "Can't he be both?"
"Tony, I'm serious. He moves like he's got years of training, then face-plants into a wall. It's like he's got two different people in his head—one who knows what he's doing, one who's ten years old."
"If only you knew," Ben thought grimly.
After everyone slept, Ben's real training began. JARVIS had privacy mode—a feature Tony had given him access to without realizing what he was enabling. The AI would monitor for safety but wouldn't report activities unless directly asked.
Ben transformed the mansion's gym into his personal dojo. Parkour across the rafters and support beams, his small body flowing through three-dimensional space with increasing fluidity. Hawkeye's Aim throwing everything from darts to weighted balls at targets he'd set up throughout the room. Enhanced Reflexes trained through JARVIS-controlled automated turrets that fired foam darts from unpredictable angles.
Arc Reactor Technology studying schematics JARVIS provided, his S-Rank ability drinking in the technical knowledge like a sponge. The understanding deepened each night—energy conversion principles, miniaturization techniques, power distribution systems.
The montage of weeks showed steady progress. His throws became deadlier, movements more fluid, technical understanding more sophisticated. Numbers ticked up on his System interface with religious regularity:
[PARKOUR: LEVEL 32]
[HAWKEYE'S AIM: LEVEL 35]
[ARC REACTOR TECHNOLOGY: LEVEL 25]
[ENHANCED HEARING: LEVEL 20]
[TOTAL POWER: 3,420]
JARVIS observed everything, cataloging data with artificial patience. Tony's orders were clear: monitor but don't interfere. Just watch the strange boy who trained like his life depended on it.
Because it did.
Enhanced Reflexes hit Level 50, and Ben's System exploded with notifications:
[ABILITY MAXED!]
[AWAKENING AVAILABLE!]
[REQUIREMENTS: 10 AWAKENING STONES (0/10)]
[COMPLETE TRIAL DUNGEON: 'BULLET TIME']
[SACRIFICE 5 C-RANK ABILITIES AS FUEL]
Ben stared at the message, heart hammering. He could transcend his first ability, break past the C-Rank ceiling into new territory. But he needed resources he didn't have yet. The Trial Dungeon option glowed temptingly—he could attempt it without the stones, but failure meant the ability would lock for a month.
His adult mind weighed risk versus reward. Not yet. He needed to be stronger first, gather the required materials. But knowing he'd reached this milestone filled him with fierce pride—he wasn't just surviving anymore. He was thriving.
Tony found him in the gym at 2 AM, sweating and grinning at invisible numbers.
"Kid, you need sleep."
"Can't sleep, too excited about... uh... school?"
Tony's skeptical expression was priceless. "We haven't enrolled you yet."
"Exactly! So much to learn!"
Tony couldn't argue with that enthusiasm, but his sharp eyes missed nothing. The way Ben moved, the precision of his actions, the knowledge he shouldn't possess. Questions multiplied like bacteria in the genius mind.
"He's getting suspicious," Ben realized. "I need to be more careful."
[QUEST PROGRESS: TRAIN WITH HAPPY 30 TIMES (18/30)]
[QUEST PROGRESS: HELP TONY SOLVE 5 ENGINEERING PROBLEMS (2/5)]
A month had passed since Tony's return from Afghanistan. Ben had settled into Stark Mansion, his abilities growing steadily, his relationships deepening. He was almost comfortable—which was when his Enhanced Hearing caught a TV news report from Tony's workshop.
"Stark Industries stock volatility continues as board members question Tony Stark's leadership following his shocking weapons division shutdown..."
Ben's blood chilled. He'd almost forgotten in the comfort and routine of his new life. Obadiah Stane. The villain was still out there, plotting, and Ben's adult memories screamed that the confrontation was coming.
He had weeks, not months. Time to stop grinding for fun and start preparing for war.
The stakes were about to rise exponentially, and Ben needed every advantage he could get.
