Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20 THE BLOOD MOON RISING

PART 1

The city lay quiet under the lingering glow of the Blood Moon, but Emiliano could feel the tension in the air.

Even though the fragments were temporarily contained, their resonance had left ripples of instability. Shadows still moved unnaturally, curling along walls, slipping through cracks, and whispering in unintelligible voices.

Emiliano stood on the roof of his apartment building, Lucía beside him, Kael scanning the streets below. The scar on Emiliano's arm pulsed faintly, a constant reminder that the fragment inside him was alive—and growing.

"This calm… it's only a lull," Emiliano murmured. "He's watching. Waiting. Planning something bigger."

Kael nodded grimly. "Yes. And this time… it's not just the fragments. The Blood Moon's influence is spreading globally. Reports are coming in of shadows and anomalies all over the world. We are no longer just defending San Espiritu."

Lucía shivered. "So… what do we do?"

"We prepare," Emiliano said firmly. "We train, gather allies, and learn everything we can. We fight smarter, not just harder."

1. A Call for Allies

Kael led them to an old, hidden chamber beneath the city library—a place he called the Sanctuary. Ancient symbols lined the walls, protective wards carved into stone. It was a safe place to plan.

"This is where we will regroup," Kael explained. "The fragments are only the beginning. To face El Oscuro's true power, we need more than just strength. We need knowledge… strategy… and allies."

Emiliano's shadow coiled beside him, restless, whispering faintly:

"Allies will fail you… only I am eternal…"

He clenched his fists, forcing the darkness down. "Not today."

Lucía placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "You're not alone, Emi. We fight together."

Kael continued, tracing symbols along the floor. "We need to identify people who have survived fragments or similar events. Those with a connection to the Blood Moon. They can help us control our powers, understand the fragments, and strengthen our defenses."

Emiliano nodded. "Then we start finding them. Whoever they are… we need them."

2. The First Strike

Before they could begin recruitment, a tremor shook the city. Shadows erupted from the ground in the Plaza of the Ancients, writhing violently. The contained fragments' energy reacted, pulsing in sync with the Blood Moon.

A towering figure emerged from the darkness—a new fragment, larger and more feral than any they had faced. Its body was jagged, smoke-like, tendrils stretching across buildings. Molten eyes glowed with hunger.

Emiliano stepped forward instinctively. "Another one… already?"

Kael drew a containment circle immediately. "It's testing us. We need to weaken it before it spreads."

Lucía's voice trembled. "Do you think we can stop it?"

Emiliano's eyes narrowed. "We have to. No matter what."

The fragment lunged, shadow tendrils slashing toward them. Emiliano summoned his shadow, striking at the monster. Kael reinforced the circle, chanting rapidly. Lucía chanted alongside him, focusing on Emiliano, anchoring his consciousness.

The fight was brutal. The fragment's power was stronger, faster, more intelligent. Each strike it made seemed calculated, testing their abilities, seeking weaknesses.

3. Coordination and Sacrifice

Emiliano realized that fighting alone would not work. He had to synchronize with Lucía and Kael.

He focused, letting the fragment inside him resonate with his own shadow. Its whispers became a low roar:

"You cannot command me… I am eternal…"

"I command nothing!" Emiliano shouted, forcing his will into the darkness. His shadow surged outward, striking the fragment with controlled bursts of energy, channeling the fragment's chaos into directed force.

Kael and Lucía's combined efforts created a stable containment field, guiding Emiliano's strikes and reinforcing the circle. Sparks of red and silver light collided, echoing like thunder across the plaza.

The fragment shrieked violently, its tendrils flailing. Pieces of it splintered and dissolved into small, black orbs that fell into Kael's containment wards.

4. Aftermath and Realizations

The battle left them exhausted, but alive. The fragment was contained—for now—but Emiliano could feel the internal fragment reacting, stronger than ever, pulsating with anticipation.

Lucía approached him, worried. "Emi… you're pushing yourself too far. What if you lose control?"

Emiliano looked at his hands, shadow coiling around them. "I can't afford not to. If I hesitate… more fragments, more chaos, more destruction. I have to be ready."

Kael studied the plaza, eyes narrowed. "This was only a warning. El Oscuro is testing our limits. The fragments are now more intelligent—they learn from each confrontation."

Emiliano swallowed hard. "Then we need to learn faster."

Lucía took his hand. "And we will. Together."

5. A New Threat Emerges

As they regrouped in the Sanctuary, a faint chill swept the room. A shadow detached itself from the wall, tall, cloaked, and impossibly thin. It moved silently, weaving through the protective wards.

Kael's eyes widened. "That… shouldn't be possible."

Emiliano stepped forward, shadow coiling defensively. "Who's there?"

The figure spoke, voice low and chilling:

"You have survived the fragments… but you cannot survive me. El Oscuro sees all… and his true form approaches."

The shadow dissipated as quickly as it appeared, leaving only a whisper behind:

"Prepare yourselves… the Blood Moon rises fully, and with it… the darkness will consume everything."

Emiliano's fists clenched. "Then we prepare. Whatever comes… we face it. Together."

Lucía's hand found his. Kael's gaze was steady, calculating. The stakes had risen. The global awakening of the fragments was only the first wave, and now, a direct threat from El Oscuro himself had emerged.

The Blood Moon hung crimson in the sky, casting a foreboding glow over the city. Shadows writhed and twisted in every alley, every street, every corner, whispering promises of chaos. And Emiliano knew, with absolute certainty:

The war with El Oscuro had only just begun—and it would demand everything they had to survive.

PART 2

The Sanctuary shivered as though sensing the approaching darkness.

Emiliano paced, shadow coiling around his limbs, alert and restless. Lucía and Kael stood beside him, scanning the wards, listening to the faint whispers that had grown louder since the last battle.

Suddenly, the air thickened. The crimson glow of the Blood Moon intensified outside, turning the city into a landscape of fire and shadow.

A deep, chilling laugh echoed, not from any fragment, but from somewhere far beyond the city. It resonated in their bones:

"So… my children gather. How quaint. Let us see if you can survive the dawn."

Emiliano froze. His internal fragment pulsed violently. This wasn't a fragment's voice—it was El Oscuro himself.

Lucía's hand found his arm. "That… that's him?"

Kael's eyes darkened. "Yes. He's testing the boundaries of your defenses. This is no longer just fragments—he is coming."

1. The First Strike

The Sanctuary's protective wards flared, attempting to shield them, but the air trembled as darkness surged forward.

Shadows outside coalesced, stretching into monstrous shapes. Entire streets seemed to twist unnaturally, as if the city itself was bending toward the will of El Oscuro.

Emiliano's shadow reacted immediately, coiling around him like a living armor. "We have to hold the line!" he shouted.

Kael's voice was sharp. "The wards won't last long. We need to disrupt his approach!"

Lucía's eyes scanned the room. "Then we fight… together!"

Suddenly, a wave of darkness slammed against the Sanctuary, tearing at the protective symbols. Emiliano leapt forward, channeling his internal fragment to reinforce the wards.

The fragment inside hissed:

"You cannot contain him… he is eternal…"

"I don't care!" Emiliano roared, striking the ground. Shadows erupted, colliding with the advancing darkness in a violent explosion of red and black light.

2. Shadows Across the City

Through the reinforced windows, Emiliano saw the streets twisted by El Oscuro's power. Shadows surged upward, coiling around buildings, wrapping around streetlights, and creeping toward living beings.

Kael pointed at the city map projected by his sigils. "If we don't act fast, he will spread across every district. Containing fragments is one thing—but this… this is his true power manifesting!"

Lucía gripped Emiliano's arm. "We need to stop him from connecting with the fragments. If he links with them, the city will be lost."

Emiliano's teeth clenched. "Then we stop him. Here. Now."

3. A Dangerous Plan

Kael outlined a risky strategy. "We have to sever the connection between him and the fragments. Emiliano, you will act as a conduit to channel the fragments' energy back into containment. Lucía and I will maintain the wards. But… if you lose focus, he could take over completely."

Emiliano's shadow surged in anticipation. The fragment inside him screamed in frustration and hunger.

"You cannot do it alone… I will rise!"

"I'm not alone," Emiliano said firmly, looking at Lucía and Kael. "We do this together."

The three of them moved into position. Kael began chanting, glowing sigils appearing across the floor, walls, and ceiling. Lucía held the silver pendant, its light flaring as she whispered ancient words. Emiliano reached out with his shadow, connecting with the pulsating energy of the contained fragments.

4. Channeling the Fragments

Emiliano felt the fragments' energy surge through him. It was overwhelming—powerful, chaotic, and sentient. His own internal fragment stirred violently, clawing at his mind, seeking to break free.

He gritted his teeth. "I control this… not you!"

The fragments responded, their energy stabilizing under Emiliano's will. He became a conduit, directing their combined power into the Sanctuary's wards, reinforcing them against El Oscuro's assault.

Outside, the shadows screamed as if enraged, retreating slightly, but the city was still under siege.

Lucía's voice was steady. "Keep going, Emi! You're doing it!"

Kael's chants grew faster, weaving a network of sigils that amplified Emiliano's control. Light and shadow collided violently, echoing through the city like thunder.

5. The Warning

Suddenly, a voice echoed inside Emiliano's mind—deep, cold, and eternal.

"Impressive… but futile. You delay me, but you cannot stop me. Soon… all will kneel before me. Your strength… your allies… nothing will save you."

Emiliano's hands shook, but he forced focus, channeling more energy, linking the fragments' containment orbs to his shadow, his mind, and the wards.

The fragment inside him roared in frustration:

"I should consume you! He belongs to me!"

"I am not yours!" Emiliano shouted. He struck the ground, releasing a controlled burst of shadow energy, stabilizing the wards.

Kael's voice broke through, urgent. "Almost there! Hold the network! Don't let him touch you!"

Lucía's pendant flared brightly, her voice steady. "We are here, Emi! Together!"

6. A Temporary Victory

The city fell silent, as though holding its breath. The shadows outside began to recede, the crimson glow of the Blood Moon dimming slightly. Emiliano slumped to the floor, exhausted, sweat and blood covering him.

Kael surveyed the Sanctuary. "It's stable… for now. But the attack is only a warning. He is preparing something larger. He's testing our defenses, learning our limits."

Lucía knelt beside Emiliano. "You're alive… we're alive. That's what matters."

Emiliano's eyes glowed faint red as he looked toward the moon. "We survived… but we cannot rest. The fragments, the Blood Moon, El Oscuro… it's all building toward something catastrophic. And soon, we'll have no choice but to face him directly."

The crimson light outside pulsed ominously. Shadows writhed and twisted across the city, whispering promises of chaos. And Emiliano knew, with unshakable certainty:

The war with El Oscuro had entered a new, more dangerous stage—and nothing would ever be the same again.
