Ash activated his Ascension Trainer System, scanning Gary's Fletchling with practiced ease.
Just as he expected, the Pokémon distributed for the summer camp were all set at the same starting level — LV.5.
Fletchling's moveset consisted of three basic skills, exactly like Froakie's. The only difference was in proficiency. Froakie's lowest mastery level was Skilled, and its two core offensive moves, Pound and Bubble, had already reached Proficient through intense training.
Gary's Fletchling, on the other hand, had barely hit Skilled in any of its moves.
Still, Ash didn't underestimate it. A Flying-type Pokémon like Fletchling held a natural advantage in agility and aerial mobility.
While Ash was quietly analyzing his opponent through the system interface, the referee raised his hand.
"...Battle begin!!"
"Fletchling, take off! Keep your distance from Froakie!" Gary called out first, his voice confident.
"Fletch!!"
The tiny bird shot into the sky like an arrow, wings cutting through the air as it quickly gained altitude.
The crowd of kids watching erupted in cheers. Many of them had never seen an actual battle before, and just watching a Pokémon take flight was enough to thrill them.
Ash, however, remained calm. He had already seen through Gary's move. Fletchling didn't have any ranged attacks—it could only fight up close.
Smiling faintly, Ash gave his command.
"Froakie, use Growl."
"Froa…"
Froakie crouched low, then tilted its head back, letting out a resonant croak that echoed across the field.
Though Growl was a low-level move, at this early stage it still had tactical value.
Fletchling's attack power dropped slightly, and the taunting tone of Froakie's call irritated it just enough to throw it off balance.
"Oh, so you're not attacking?" Gary narrowed his eyes. "Then don't blame me for striking first! Fletchling, Quick Attack! Now!"
"Fletch!!"
The bird cried out as its body blurred, enveloped in white light—it dove like a meteor straight toward Froakie!
The watching campers gasped in awe. The speed was dazzling, the momentum terrifying.
But Ash's expression didn't change. His voice cut through the noise, calm and commanding:
"Froakie, use Frubbles —block it!"
"Froaa!!"
In an instant, the layer of sticky bubbles around Froakie's neck burst outward, forming a thick, foamy wall between it and the incoming attack.
Thump!!
The sound wasn't heavy—it was like a punch landing on a pillow.
Fletchling slammed directly into the frothy barrier and immediately got stuck fast!
Its wings flapped wildly, but the sticky foam clung tightly to its body.
"Fletchling!" Gary shouted, eyes wide. For a moment, he froze, unsure how to react.
Meanwhile, Ash's eyes gleamed with sharpness. The moment he'd been waiting for had arrived.
"Now, Froakie—use Pound! Finish it!"
"Froaa!!"
From behind the foam shield, Froakie's webbed hand shot out, gripping the trapped Fletchling firmly by the wing. With its other hand, it struck down with all its might—
Smack!!
"Fletch!!"
The blow landed clean. Fletchling's eyes rolled back, and it fell limp, crashing to the ground in defeat.
The referee immediately raised his flag.
"Fletchling is unable to battle! The winner is Ash's Froakie!"
For a moment, the entire clearing was silent—then cheers erupted from every direction.
"Whoa! That was awesome!"
"Fletchling had the upper hand at first, but Froakie turned it around just like that!"
"I can't believe it—Froakie's so strong!"
One of the older aides near the battlefield shook his head, smiling. "No, it's not just Froakie. All the Pokémon given out are about equal in strength. The real difference here is the Trainer."
"That's true," another said. "Fletchling had the advantage of flight, but Froakie's use of its foam… that was pure strategy. That boy—Ash—he's something else."
In the ring, Ash stood calmly while the crowd cheered. His strategy had worked perfectly.
On the other side, Gary was still staring blankly at his fallen Fletchling, clearly stunned by how quickly the battle had ended.
Then came the familiar chime in Ash's mind—
[Ding! Congratulations, Host! You've defeated LV.5 Fletchling. Gained 50 EXP!]
[Froakie has leveled up! Current Level: LV.6]
"Froakie leveled up?!"
Ash blinked, then grinned from ear to ear.
The Ascension Trainer System might be severely damaged, but its three core functions—Skill Copy, Proficiency Growth, and Level Advancement—were still operational.
He had already tested the first two modules.
Now, by commanding Froakie in a real battle, he had finally triggered the third one—
[Level Advancement Module Activated]
Description: Pokémon gain EXP and level up quickly by defeating opponents.
Simple. Brutal. Efficient.
And unlike Skill Copy, this module had no restrictions. Even repeat battles against the same opponent would still grant experience.
"With this Level Advancement function, raising my Pokémon's level is going to be so much easier from now on," Ash thought with delight.
He looked down at Froakie and smiled warmly. "Great job, Froakie. You did amazing out there."
"Froaa~!"
Hearing his Trainer's praise, Froakie's eyes curved into cheerful little crescents. It puffed out its chest proudly—its first victory had never felt so good.
