Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Bringing the Corpse Back to the Court

Gwen slightly raised her head, looked at Officer Gordon with sincere eyes, and softly said, "Officer Gordon, I'm truly grateful for everything you and the Police Department have done for this case, allowing the murderer of my parents to be apprehended so quickly."

Officer Gordon nodded slightly and said, "Miss Gwen, this is our duty as Police."

At this moment, Brock, who had been quietly observing from the side, quickly stepped forward and hastily added, "And even before the Police officially set out to find the killer, the Falcone Family had already secretly helped with the search.

You know, they have immense power in Gotham and many informants.

If it weren't for their early efforts, we wouldn't have been able to catch the killer so quickly on our own."

As Brock spoke, he observed Gwen's reaction out of the corner of his eye.

After all, he knew very well that the Falcone Family deserved the primary credit for the swift resolution of this case, strictly speaking.

He and Gordon, at best, were just taking credit for something already done.

Of course, even without the Falcone Family's involvement, he and Gordon would still have been able to solve the case.

But it would definitely have taken longer, though still within a reasonable timeframe.

However, the Falcone Family, with their intricate network and informants spread throughout the streets, managed to locate and apprehend the target even before the Police.

Now that the case was swiftly concluded, the facts were clear: they caught him faster than you, and you had to be grateful to him.

If he and Gordon dared to claim credit, it was likely that two more bodies would turn up at the docks the next day.

Brock shivered, trying to shake off that terrifying thought from his mind, and continued, "Miss Gwen, the Falcone Family's dedication to this case shows how deep their friendship with the Wayne Family truly is."

Gwen listened quietly to Brock's words, nodded slightly, and that gentle smile reappeared on her face.

"Now that the killer has been caught..." She paused deliberately before continuing, "I wish to take my parents' bodies.

They should go home."

Upon hearing this, Gordon couldn't help but be taken aback.

"Miss Gwen," Gordon began, with a hint of caution in his tone, "the case only happened yesterday; isn't it a bit too soon?"

At his words, a trace of confusion instantly appeared on Gwen's face.

She tilted her head slightly, her bright eyes filled with bewilderment, and stared at Gordon, asking, "Officer Gordon, when you say that, does it mean there's still something suspicious about the case?"

Gordon quickly waved his hand, his expression serious as he said, "No, no, no, Miss Gwen, please don't misunderstand.

There's nothing suspicious about the case at the moment; the killer has already confessed, and the evidence is undeniable."

Gwen's confusion deepened, and even a hint of worry appeared in her eyes as she pressed again, "Then does that mean something went wrong with my parents' bodies during the autopsy?"

"No, Miss Gwen.

The autopsy proceeded smoothly, and the results are clear, with no abnormalities whatsoever."

Gwen continued to press, still using that strange tone as she asked, "Then does it mean the bodies underwent some strange change, turning into zombies and running away or something?"

Upon hearing this, Gordon's expression instantly froze, and fine beads of sweat immediately appeared on his forehead.

Cold sweat trickled down his cheeks, and the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.

He secretly wondered if he had thought she was mature too soon.

"No, no, Miss Gwen, absolutely nothing of the sort.

Please rest assured, the bodies have been properly preserved in the Police Department's morgue, with no abnormalities whatsoever," Gordon explained, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead with his hand, his eyes filled with helplessness and embarrassment.

Gwen listened to Gordon's answer, but instead of relaxing her brows, she furrowed them even tighter.

Her eyes were even more confused, and with a hint of bewilderment in her tone, she asked again, "Since there are no problems with the case, the autopsy has been successfully completed, and the bodies are normal, then why can't I take my parents' bodies?"

Gordon opened his mouth, but for a moment, he was speechless.

He looked at Brock for help, hoping his partner could get him out of this predicament.

But Brock was also looking at his partner with confusion at this moment.

In Brock's opinion, Gwen's request was perfectly reasonable; since the case had been solved and the autopsy was fine, it was logical to allow the family to reclaim the bodies for burial.

He truly didn't understand what Gordon could still be worried about.

Brock saw Gordon looking at him expectantly and could only shrug helplessly.

There's really nothing I can do, brother.

You can't just not let him take them, can you?

There's no reason.

Brock looked at Gordon, silently sighed, and no longer bothered with him.

He quickly adjusted himself, a bright smile spreading across his face, and strode forward.

"Miss Gwen," Brock began, "our Police have successfully apprehended the murderer of the Wayne Couple.

The bodies can naturally be returned to the family.

Your wish for Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Martha to rest in peace as soon as possible is a perfectly reasonable request, and we fully support it."

As Brock spoke, he turned to look at Gordon, a hint of teasing in his eyes, and added, "My colleague just tends to overthink things.

He's always worried about potential issues later in the case or overlooking certain details.

Actually, the case has been thoroughly investigated!

It's just that he's too conscientious, and I hope you'll be understanding."

Gwen quietly listened to Brock's words, nodded slightly, and that gentle smile reappeared on her face: "I understand.

Officer Gordon is also ensuring the case is foolproof; it's his duty."

Upon hearing this, Brock's smile grew even wider, and he put on an exaggerated expression of relief: "Oh, Miss Gwen, it's wonderful that you understand!"

"Without further ado, let's head to the morgue now to handle the handover procedures.

Are you ready?" As he spoke, he gestured for her to follow.

Gwen smiled faintly and slowly stood up.

Brock also stood up, and he slightly turned to walk side-by-side with Gwen towards the door of the reception room.

Seeing this, Gordon quickly stood up as well and silently followed behind them.

The three hurried down the dimly lit corridor, and the surrounding Police Officers, upon learning the identity of the girl next to Brock, instinctively moved aside.

Soon, they arrived at the morgue door.

Brock raised his hand and gently knocked a few times on the cold door.

"Who is it!" A loud, resentful shout came from inside the room.

Brock frowned slightly and was about to speak when the door was suddenly pulled open with a creak, and a forensic pathologist in a white lab coat, whom Gwen found familiar, appeared at the doorway.

Oh, wasn't this the forensic pathologist he met when he brought the bodies over?
