Chapter 133 - Chapter 133 : The Choice They Didn't Give Him

Dawn came quietly.

The first light appeared beyond the mountains, slowly revealing the settlement below.

William had remained awake throughout the night.

Mira was sitting a short distance away, while Adrian stood with his arms crossed, watching the roads leading toward the settlement.

Nothing had happened.

No attack.

No assassination attempt.

No sudden movement from the organizations that had been observing the competition.

That silence was precisely what concerned William.

Adrian finally spoke.

"They've been quiet for too long."

William nodded.

"Yes."

Mira looked at him.

"Do you think they left?"

"No."

"Then what are they waiting for?"

William looked toward the settlement.

"For us to become comfortable."

Mira frowned.

"Comfortable?"

"Yes."

He paused.

"Fear makes people alert. When someone threatens you, you start watching every movement around you. But if nothing happens for long enough, eventually you stop."

Adrian nodded.

"And that's when they act."

"Perhaps."

William looked at the people below.

"But there's another possibility."

"What?"

"They're waiting for someone else to make the first move."

Several hours later, the situation changed.

A group of cultivators entered the settlement.

They weren't particularly large.

Only seven people.

But the insignia on their clothing immediately caught William's attention.

Adrian recognized it as well.

"One of the powers that came to the competition."

William nodded.

"They're back."

Mira watched them.

"They didn't come yesterday."

"No."

"Why now?"

William didn't answer.

He simply watched.

The seven cultivators entered the central square.

Their leader spoke with several independent cultivators.

At first, the conversation seemed ordinary.

Then the atmosphere changed.

One of the independent cultivators suddenly stepped backward.

The leader said something.

The cultivator shook his head.

A second person intervened.

Within moments, an argument had begun.

Mira stood.

"Should we go?"

William remained seated.

"Not yet."

"But something is wrong."

"I know."

"Then why wait?"

"Because we don't know what they're trying to accomplish."

Mira frowned.

William looked at her.

"If I interfere every time I see conflict, eventually I'll become exactly what they're trying to make me look like."

She sat again.

The argument below continued.

Then something unexpected happened.

Leon stepped forward.

He stood between the two sides.

The leader of the organization looked at him.

"You."

Leon remained calm.

"This is unnecessary."

The man smiled.

"Move."

"No."

The man's expression hardened.

"You've already refused our offer."

"I did."

"Then don't interfere in our affairs."

Leon shook his head.

"You came here and started threatening people."

The surrounding cultivators began gathering.

The leader looked around.

"These people are free to choose."

"Then let them choose without threatening them."

The man laughed.

"You're becoming brave."

Leon didn't move.

"I'm becoming tired."

William watched silently.

Mira glanced at him.

"He's going to get himself hurt."

"Maybe."

"You're not going to help?"

"Not yet."

She looked at him with disbelief.

"William."

He remained calm.

"Leon has made a choice."

Mira understood.

"He wants to handle it himself."

"Yes."

"And if he fails?"

William looked at the scene below.

"Then we'll intervene."

The leader suddenly attacked.

Leon barely avoided the first strike.

The ground beneath him shattered.

Several people stepped back.

Leon counterattacked.

The battle lasted only a few moments.

The difference in strength was obvious.

Leon was forced backward.

The man raised his hand for another attack.

Then stopped.

Leon was standing.

Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.

But he hadn't fallen.

The leader looked at him.

"Why are you still standing?"

Leon wiped the blood from his face.

"Because I don't want to kneel."

The leader's expression changed.

He raised his hand again.

This time William stood.

The pressure that descended over the settlement made everyone freeze.

The leader looked toward the mountain.

William had already disappeared.

The next instant, he stood between them.

"Enough."

The leader's face became pale.

"You..."

William looked at Leon.

"Are you finished?"

Leon nodded.

"Yes."

William turned toward the organization.

"Then leave."

The leader stared at him.

"You have no authority here."

William looked at him.

"Neither do you."

The man clenched his fists.

"This doesn't concern you."

William's voice remained calm.

"It does now."

The man looked around.

He realized that almost everyone in the settlement was watching.

He could continue.

But if he did, he would reveal exactly what his organization wanted.

So he lowered his hand.

"This isn't over."

William nodded.

"I know."

The seven cultivators left.

Leon remained standing.

William looked at him.

"You should rest."

Leon laughed weakly.

"I thought you were going to let me lose."

"I was."

Leon looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because you asked me for nothing."

Leon became silent.

William continued.

"If I had intervened immediately, I would have made your decision meaningless."

Leon smiled.

"I understand."

Mira approached.

"You almost died."

Leon looked at her.

"I know."

"That doesn't bother you?"

"It does."

Mira stared at him.

"Then why?"

Leon looked toward the road where the organization had disappeared.

"Because if I always wait for someone stronger to save me, I'll never become strong enough to protect anyone myself."

William looked at him.

For the first time, he saw something beyond talent.

Purpose.

That afternoon, the atmosphere in the settlement changed.

The independent cultivators had seen what happened.

Some began talking about leaving.

Others became more determined to remain.

But something else had happened.

The people who had previously been afraid to speak began expressing their opinions openly.

William noticed.

He didn't interfere.

He simply watched.

Mira stood beside him.

"Is this what you wanted?"

William shook his head.

"I didn't create this."

"But you gave them the space to do it."

William smiled slightly.

"Maybe."

That evening, William received another message.

This one was different.

There was no threat.

Only a location.

A place several hundred kilometers away.

Adrian looked at it.

"It's probably a trap."

"Yes."

Mira frowned.

"Then why go?"

William folded the message.

"Because they want me there."

Adrian stared at him.

"You're actually going?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

William looked at Mira.

"No."

Mira immediately understood.

"I'm coming."

Adrian sighed.

"So am I."

William nodded.

"We leave tonight."

They traveled through the night.

The location led them toward a deserted valley.

There were no settlements nearby.

No visible cultivators.

No obvious formations.

William stopped at the entrance.

"Wait here."

Mira frowned.

"You just said we weren't separating."

"I said we're going together."

He looked toward the valley.

"But I want to enter first."

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because whoever invited us wants to speak."

"How do you know?"

"If they wanted to kill us, they wouldn't have given us a location."

Adrian shook his head.

"That's not necessarily true."

"I know."

William smiled faintly.

"That's why I'm still cautious."

He entered.

Mira and Adrian followed.

The valley was silent.

After walking several hundred meters, William saw a person standing beneath a large stone formation.

A woman.

She wore simple dark clothing.

No insignia.

No visible weapon.

She looked at William.

"You're earlier than expected."

William stopped.

"Who are you?"

"Someone who wants to speak."

"About what?"

"About the people watching you."

William's expression changed slightly.

"You know who they are?"

"I know some of them."

"Then tell me."

She smiled.

"Not yet."

William remained silent.

She continued.

"You've spent a long time trying to find the person behind the information."

"Yes."

"You've been looking in the wrong direction."

William narrowed his eyes.

"Explain."

"The person providing the information isn't your real enemy."

Mira and Adrian exchanged glances.

William remained focused on the woman.

"Then who is?"

She looked at him.

"The people deciding what to do with that information."

William thought for a moment.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does."

She stepped closer.

"Information is useless without someone who can turn it into action."

William didn't answer.

"Someone has been giving different powers pieces of information about you."

"Yes."

"But the people receiving it aren't working together."

"Some are."

"Not in the way you think."

William's eyes narrowed.

She continued.

"They are being encouraged to react independently."

"Why?"

"Because whoever is behind this wants to create conflict around you without ever appearing."

William's expression became colder.

"To isolate me."

"Exactly."

Mira spoke.

"From whom?"

The woman looked at her.

"Everyone."

Silence.

William understood.

The attacks.

The warnings.

The recruitment attempts.

The competition.

The manipulated information.

None of them had been isolated events.

They were pieces of the same strategy.

Make William appear dangerous.

Make people around him afraid.

Make powerful organizations suspicious.

Make potential allies hesitate.

Then, eventually, leave William standing alone.

William looked at the woman.

"Why are you telling me this?"

She hesitated.

"Because I don't think you deserve to be destroyed for refusing to become what they want."

William stared at her.

"Who are you working for?"

She smiled faintly.

"No one."

"I don't believe you."

"You shouldn't."

William's expression remained serious.

"Then why should I believe anything you said?"

"You shouldn't."

She stepped backward.

"That's why I'm not asking you to believe me."

"Then what do you want?"

"Watch what happens next."

William's eyes narrowed.

"What happens next?"

She looked toward the distant horizon.

"Someone close to you will be offered something."

Mira's expression changed.

"What?"

The woman looked directly at William.

"Freedom."

William remained still.

"From what?"

The woman smiled.

"From you."

Then she turned.

William immediately moved.

But before he could reach her, the space around her distorted.

She disappeared.

William stood in silence.

Adrian approached.

"Did you recognize her?"

"No."

"Do you believe her?"

William looked toward the place where she had vanished.

"I don't know."

Mira was quiet.

William turned toward her.

"What?"

She hesitated.

"Nothing."

"Mira."

She looked at him.

"I was thinking about what she said."

William waited.

"Someone will be offered freedom from you."

She looked away.

"That sounds like me."

William frowned.

"Why?"

"Because if I stay with you, my life will become more dangerous."

William didn't answer.

Mira continued.

"And if I leave, maybe everything becomes easier."

William looked at her.

"You don't have to stay."

"I know."

"But you're thinking about it."

"Yes."

William nodded.

"Then think."

Mira looked at him.

"You're not going to stop me?"

"No."

"Even after everything?"

"Yes."

She looked at him for a long time.

Then smiled sadly.

"That's exactly why this is difficult."

They returned to the settlement before sunrise.

None of them spoke during the journey.

William understood the enemy's next move now.

They had finally found a weakness they could exploit.

Not fear.

Not power.

Freedom itself.

They would not force Mira to leave.

They would make her believe that leaving was the best decision she could make.

And William couldn't prevent it without betraying everything he believed.

When they reached the settlement, Mira stopped.

"William."

He turned.

"I need some time."

He nodded.

"Take it."

She walked away.

Adrian remained beside him.

"You know what they're doing."

"Yes."

"And you still won't stop her."

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"Even if she leaves?"

William stared at the empty road.

"Even then."

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Adrian asked:

"Doesn't that hurt?"

William's expression became distant.

"Of course it does."

He looked down.

"But if I force someone to stay because I'm afraid of losing them..."

He paused.

"...then I haven't built something worth following."

The sun slowly rose over the horizon.

William watched it in silence.

Some battles were fought with strength.

Some with intelligence.

And some...

Could only be won by accepting that the people you cared about were free to walk away.

But somewhere beyond the settlement, someone was waiting for Mira to make exactly that choice.
