Chapter 145 - Chapter 145 : A Step Into the Trap

The information war continued without either side declaring it a war.

William traveled.

The observers watched.

False information moved from one place to another.

And every reaction gave William another small piece of the puzzle.

But after several days, he realized something.

The people watching him were becoming more careful.

They no longer reacted immediately.

They were learning.

That meant the same strategy wouldn't work forever.

William stood before a map spread across a table.

Mira, Adrian, Leon, and Elias were around him.

Several locations were marked.

"These are the places where information about me appeared."

Mira looked at the marks.

"All of them?"

"All the ones we could confirm."

Adrian frowned.

"There's no obvious pattern."

"Not geographically."

William moved his finger between several points.

"But there is another pattern."

He pointed toward the dates.

"They reacted only after certain information reached them."

Leon looked closer.

"What kind?"

"Information about my training."

"And when you changed your route?"

"They reacted differently."

Mira understood.

"They aren't simply following you."

"No."

William looked at her.

"They're trying to predict you."

William remained silent for a moment.

Then he took the strange symbol from his pocket.

The one the mysterious woman had given him.

He placed it on the map.

"This is the only thing connecting the unknown groups."

Adrian looked at it.

"Have you discovered what it means?"

"Not yet."

"Can your ability tell you?"

William shook his head.

"It doesn't have a direct connection to anything."

Mira frowned.

"Then why are you still carrying it?"

"Because someone wanted me to have it."

Leon looked at him.

"And you think that was intentional?"

"Yes."

"Then perhaps it wasn't meant to reveal something."

William nodded.

"Perhaps it was meant to make me look somewhere."

Silence.

Adrian smiled.

"You're starting to suspect everyone."

"No."

William looked at him.

"I'm starting to suspect every piece of information."

That afternoon, William left the camp.

He went alone.

This time, however, he didn't create false information.

He did something more dangerous.

He acted according to a real part of his plan.

He headed toward an abandoned territory where he intended to train.

It was a place he had already considered visiting.

But he had never mentioned it to anyone.

Not even Mira.

If someone followed him there, the information couldn't have come from the group.

William traveled for several days.

Nothing happened.

No observer.

No suspicious presence.

No interruption.

Eventually, he reached the territory.

It was quiet.

The land was covered with enormous rocks and ancient formations.

William walked deeper into it.

Then he stopped.

Someone was already there.

A woman stood several meters away.

She turned when she sensed him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

William recognized her.

It was the woman who had brought him the strange symbol.

"You came."

William's expression remained neutral.

"Did you expect me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I knew you would eventually come here."

William studied her.

"How?"

She smiled.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

William didn't move.

"Then give me the right one."

She looked toward the surrounding formations.

"Ask why this place matters."

William looked around.

"Why does it?"

She smiled.

"Because it was used by people who studied the same thing you're trying to understand."

William's eyes narrowed.

"The network."

She nodded.

"Part of it."

William approached one of the ancient formations.

It was partially buried.

He examined it carefully.

"Who built this?"

"I don't know."

"You seem to know a lot for someone who claims not to know."

The woman laughed.

"Knowing where to look isn't the same as knowing the answers."

William touched the formation.

He immediately felt a weak connection.

His expression changed.

"You're right."

She looked at him.

"You can feel it."

"Yes."

"Then you understand why I brought you here."

William withdrew his hand.

"No."

She smiled.

"Good."

"Good?"

"Because if you understood immediately, I'd know you were already too close."

William looked at her.

"Who are you?"

She hesitated.

"My name isn't important."

"It is to me."

She smiled faintly.

"Call me Elena."

William nodded.

"Elena."

He looked toward the formation.

"You knew I'd come."

"Yes."

"Did you know my route?"

"No."

"Then how?"

"Because I know you."

William frowned.

"We've barely spoken."

"I know."

"Then what do you mean?"

Elena looked at him.

"I've watched you."

William became still.

"From where?"

"Different places."

"How long?"

"Long enough."

William's expression hardened.

"Then you're one of them."

"One of whom?"

"The people watching me."

She didn't deny it.

"Yes."

William's eyes narrowed.

"Then why approach me?"

"Because watching you isn't enough anymore."

"Why?"

"Because something has changed."

William waited.

Elena continued:

"You've begun noticing the network."

A faint wind passed through the ruins.

William remained silent.

Elena looked toward him.

"Most people would have ignored the disturbances."

"Some would have panicked."

"Some would have tried to exploit them."

"But you followed them."

William answered:

"They were connected."

"Exactly."

She smiled.

"And that's what makes you dangerous."

William shook his head.

"No."

"What?"

"That's what makes me curious."

Elena laughed softly.

"Perhaps both."

William examined the formation again.

"What do you want from me?"

"Nothing."

"Then why bring me here?"

"To show you something."

She walked toward the center of the ruins.

There was a stone platform.

She placed her hand on it.

The platform activated.

A faint image appeared above it.

It showed the ancient network.

But unlike the maps William had seen before, this image contained much more.

There were dozens of connections.

Hundreds.

And beyond them—

seven enormous lines.

William's eyes narrowed.

"The seven."

Elena nodded.

"You've seen them."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"In a vision."

She looked at him carefully.

"Then the network has already responded to you."

William's expression became serious.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

Elena smiled.

"Maybe."

William looked at her.

"Then tell me the truth."

She remained silent.

Eventually, she said:

"Because your ability isn't simply allowing you to see connections."

William waited.

"It's making you part of them."

William's expression changed.

He immediately focused on his surroundings.

He could feel the connections.

But now that she had said it, he looked at them differently.

They weren't simply paths between places.

Some of them seemed to react to his presence.

Not all.

Only a few.

Elena watched him.

"Do you understand?"

"Not completely."

"Good."

William looked at her.

"Stop saying that."

She laughed.

The image suddenly changed.

One of the seven lines flickered.

Then another.

Elena's expression became serious.

"That's not supposed to happen."

William looked at the image.

"What's happening?"

"I don't know."

The lines began moving.

Not randomly.

They were converging.

William's perception expanded.

Something was traveling through the network.

Fast.

Very fast.

He followed it.

Then his expression became cold.

"It's coming here."

Elena stepped back.

"What?"

William looked toward the distant horizon.

"The connection."

The formation began shaking.

A pressure appeared.

The air became heavy.

Then—

a figure appeared at the edge of the ruins.

Not a creature.

A human.

A man dressed in black.

William recognized the feeling immediately.

The same kind of connection he had sensed before.

Elena's expression changed.

"You know him?"

"No."

The man looked at William.

Then at Elena.

"You weren't supposed to bring him here."

Elena stepped forward.

"I didn't bring him."

William looked at her.

"You expected me."

"Yes."

"Then you knew this would happen."

"I suspected."

The man laughed.

"She's always been too curious."

William stepped between them.

"Enough."

The man looked at him.

"You really don't know what's happening."

William's eyes narrowed.

"Then explain."

The man smiled.

"I'd rather show you."

The formation suddenly activated.

The seven lines of light became brighter.

William felt an enormous pressure.

The man raised his hand.

The network responded.

For a brief moment, William felt his own connections being pulled.

He immediately resisted.

The man frowned.

"You really can interfere."

William stared at him.

"And you really can control the network."

"Part of it."

"Who taught you?"

The man smiled.

"Nobody."

"Then how?"

"I learned."

William's eyes narrowed.

"From the people who built it?"

The man didn't answer.

That was enough.

William attacked.

He didn't use overwhelming power.

He simply severed the connection between the man and the formation.

The man's expression changed.

The connection broke.

The formation went silent.

But the man didn't panic.

He smiled.

"Exactly."

William stopped.

"What?"

"That's what I wanted to see."

William's expression became colder.

"You baited me."

"Yes."

Elena immediately looked toward the man.

"What did you do?"

The man didn't answer her.

He looked at William.

"You've been hiding your abilities."

"Yes."

"Changing your behavior."

"Yes."

"Feeding false information."

"Yes."

The man smiled.

"And now you've revealed something real."

William remained silent.

The man continued:

"You can sever the network itself."

William understood.

This wasn't an attack.

It was an experiment.

The man had deliberately connected himself to the formation because he wanted William to react.

And William had given him the answer.

William's expression became calm.

"You made one mistake."

The man's smile disappeared.

"What?"

"You assumed I used my full ability."

Silence.

William extended his hand.

The broken connection suddenly reappeared.

But it was different.

William had not restored it.

He had created a new path.

The man's eyes widened.

"You..."

William looked at him.

"I don't just cut connections."

The new connection wrapped around the man's own connection.

"I can change them."

The man immediately withdrew.

The formation exploded with light.

Elena shielded herself.

The man vanished.

The ruins shook violently.

William remained standing.

The connection disappeared.

Silence returned.

Elena looked at William.

"You scared him."

William shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the place where the man had disappeared.

"I surprised him."

She smiled.

"Isn't that the same thing?"

"No."

William turned toward her.

"Fear makes people run."

"Surprise makes them think."

Elena nodded slowly.

"Then he'll think."

William looked at the ancient formation.

"And he'll tell whoever sent him."

Elena's expression changed.

"You think he has someone above him."

"I don't know."

"But?"

William looked toward the seven distant connections.

"But now we have a better question."

"What?"

"Why does everyone who knows about this network care about me?"

Elena remained silent.

William continued:

"And why did the network itself react to me?"

Far away, the man who had escaped appeared inside a dark chamber.

Several figures were waiting.

One immediately asked:

"What happened?"

The man remained silent.

"What did he reveal?"

The man looked at them.

"He can manipulate the network."

Silence.

"How much?"

"I don't know."

"Did he see the seven?"

"Yes."

The figures exchanged looks.

One of them stood.

"Then the situation has changed."

The man nodded.

"Yes."

"Should we eliminate him?"

"No."

"Why?"

The man remembered William's expression.

"He wasn't using his full ability."

The room became silent.

"Then what was he doing?"

The man answered:

"Testing us."

That same night, William returned to the valley.

He said nothing about Elena.

Not yet.

He needed to determine whose side she was on.

But one thing had become clear.

The people watching him were no longer merely collecting information.

They were testing him.

And now that William had deliberately revealed a fraction of what he could do, the next move belonged to them.

He stood beneath the stars.

Mira approached.

"Something happened."

"Yes."

"Bad?"

William thought about it.

"Not necessarily."

She looked at him.

"Then what?"

William smiled faintly.

"We finally made them nervous."

Mira understood.

"And that's good?"

William looked toward the darkness.

"Only if we know what they do when they're nervous."

Far beyond the valley, the seven connections remained silent.

But somewhere within that enormous network, one of them had begun moving.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Toward William.
