Chapter 69 - Enhancement Protocol 8

Bruce sat in the medical chair in Lab 3 for the third time in two weeks.

The restraints were already fastened. NEXUS had already run the baseline scan. Nothing about this felt new anymore, and that scared him a little, the way pain could become routine if you let it.

"Two treatments remain," NEXUS said. "Synaptic optimization and cellular regeneration. Both draw on the same delivery method as the previous two sessions. Pain index is projected to be comparable to the bone density treatment, moderate to severe, non-lethal, fully survivable given your current tolerance."

"Comforting."

"I am not attempting comfort. I am reporting data."

Bruce almost smiled despite the tightness already building in his chest. "Give me the synaptic treatment first. I want the mind clear before the body starts healing itself faster than it should."

"Administering now."

The needle found his arm. This time the burn didn't spread through muscle the way the first two treatments had. It went somewhere else entirely, a sharp electric pressure behind his eyes that built and built until it felt like his skull had turned into a struck bell, ringing from the inside.

Bruce gripped the armrests and breathed through it. Thoughts came faster than he could organize them, fragments of memory and calculation flooding through his mind all at once, like a hundred television channels playing over each other before the static finally settled into one clear signal.

"Heart rate 165," NEXUS reported. "Neural activity spiking well beyond baseline. This is expected. The treatment is forcing new synaptic pathways to form faster than natural development would allow."

"Feels like my brain is on fire."

"An apt description, though not medically precise."

The pressure built for nearly twenty minutes before it finally began to recede, leaving behind a strange clarity that reminded Bruce of stepping out of a loud room into silence. He blinked hard, testing his vision. Colors seemed sharper. The hum of the lab's ventilation system, something he'd tuned out for years, suddenly sounded distinct and layered, three separate frequencies instead of one flat drone.

*[ENHANCEMENT LAYER: STAGE 1 - SYNAPTIC OPTIMIZATION COMPLETE]*

*[REACTION TIME AND PROCESSING SPEED: +19% ABOVE NATURAL PEAK]*

Bruce flexed his fingers and watched them move. Not faster exactly, but the gap between deciding to move and actually moving had shrunk to something he could almost feel disappearing.

"One more," he said.

"You should rest first. Cumulative strain from two treatments in one session carries elevated risk."

"I want this done today. Bane isn't waiting for my recovery schedule."

NEXUS was quiet for a beat, the kind of pause Bruce had learned to recognize as her version of disapproval without argument. "Administering the regeneration treatment. Please note I am recording my objection for the file."

"Noted."

The final injection burned differently than the others, a slow, deep ache that settled into his bones and stayed there instead of flaring and fading. Bruce gritted his teeth and let it happen, watching the readouts on the nearby screen shift and stabilize.

By the time it was over, his whole body felt like it had been wrung out and hung up to dry. But underneath the exhaustion, something had changed permanently.

*[ENHANCEMENT LAYER: STAGE 1 - CELLULAR REGENERATION COMPLETE]*

*[HEALING RATE: APPROXIMATELY 2X NATURAL PEAK]*

*[ENHANCEMENT LAYER: STAGE 1 - 4 OF 4 TREATMENTS COMPLETE]*

Bruce stared at that final line for a long moment. Four for four. The whole staged protocol he'd designed three years ago, finally finished.

"Full diagnostic," he said, voice rough.

"Compiling now." NEXUS ran through the numbers methodically. "Strength output fourteen percent above natural peak. Bone density twenty two percent above natural peak. Reaction time and processing speed nineteen percent above natural peak. Healing rate approximately double baseline peak human recovery, meaning lacerations that previously required a week to close will now close in roughly three days, and minor bruising or soft tissue damage will resolve within hours rather than a full day."

Bruce sat up slowly, testing his own weight, his own balance. Nothing about him looked different in the mirror across the room. Same face. Same build he'd spent nine years building.

But something underneath it had shifted.

"Where does that put me," he asked, "in terms of classification. Real world."

"There is no formal real world classification system for metahuman thresholds that I am aware of," NEXUS said. "But if I extrapolate from what limited data exists on the documented metahuman cases, individuals whose baseline physiology deviates from statistically normal human ranges by even ten to fifteen percent across multiple systems are generally considered to have crossed out of purely human territory. You currently exceed that threshold in four separate categories simultaneously."

Bruce absorbed that. Not a dramatic leap. Not heat vision or flight or anything that would make headlines. But real. Measurable. A line crossed rather than approached.

"So I'm not human anymore," he said quietly. "Not fully."

"You remain overwhelmingly human in composition and function," NEXUS said. "But no. By any reasonable definition, you are no longer purely baseline. The distinction matters less for what you can currently do and more for what it confirms is possible. You have proven the enhancement protocols work exactly as designed. No side effects. No instability. No addiction markers in your bloodwork. Just controlled, permanent improvement."
