Chapter 4 - *strong willed*

He walked over, took the book from her hand, and placed it back on the shelf.

He took a step closer, his eyes locked on hers. "You don't understand what you're asking for," Fernando said softly, his voice carrying both warning and something gentler beneath it. "Once you start down this path, everything changes. Friends, family… nothing will ever be the same."

Isabella held his gaze, unwavering. "I've spent too long being afraid. I'm ready to take control of my life, no matter what it costs."

Fernando studied her for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "Good. Because the road ahead isn't easy. You'll face darkness you never imagined. But you won't be alone. I'll teach you everything you need to survive."

She swallowed, feeling a mix of fear and excitement. "I trust you."

A faint smile crossed his lips. "That's the first step. You'll need more than trust—you'll need strength. Are you prepared to fight for it?"

"I am."

Fernando's fingers lingered just a moment longer as they intertwined with Isabella's. His touch was firm but gentle, sending a warmth that contrasted the cold shadows surrounding them. He stepped closer, closing the small space between them until she could feel his steady breath against her cheek.

"Isabella," he murmured, his voice low and husky. "This isn't just about survival or power. It's about trust, loyalty… and something far more dangerous—love."

"First lesson: trust no one, especially yourself. This world doesn't forgive weakness."

Her breath caught. She looked up into his eyes, searching for the truth she so desperately needed.

"I've watched you from the edges, seen your strength beneath the quiet. You're not just a pawn in this game," he whispered, his thumb tracing soft circles on the back of her hand. "You're my queen… the only one who holds my heart."

Isabella's pulse thundered in her ears. The walls she'd built around herself trembled under the weight of his words. "But what if I'm not enough? What if I can't be what you need?"

Fernando shook his head, a rare vulnerability flickering across his face. "You already are. You've been everything to me, even before I told you."

"Then welcome to a world where shadows aren't just fears—they're your new reality."

As they left the library together, the air grew heavier, charged with unseen power. The city outside seemed different, sharper, as if it was waiting for something… or someone.

The cool evening air hit Isabella like a slap as they stepped out of the library, the quiet streets of the city stretched before them—empty, but heavy with unseen eyes. Fernando's hand found hers instinctively, gripping tightly, as if holding her close could keep the dangers at bay.

"Isabella," he murmured, voice low and rough, "things are moving faster than I thought. Every step we take, we're walking deeper into a war not many survive."

She looked up at him, the streetlights casting shadows across his sharp features. "I'm not afraid," she said, but even as the words left her lips, her heart pounded like a warning drum.

Fernando's gaze softened for a moment, then darkened again. "You should be. Because in my world, love is a battlefield. And every moment we share, every stolen touch… it puts a target on your back."

They walked in silence, the only sound the click of their footsteps on the cracked pavement. Isabella's mind raced—could she really be the queen of a crime empire? Could she survive the darkness that clung to Fernando like a second skin?

Suddenly, he stopped, pulling her into the shadow of an alley. His hands framed her face, eyes burning with fierce intensity. "Promise me something."

Her breath hitched. "Anything."

"Promise me you'll never forget… I didn't choose this for you. But now that you're here, I'll fight to keep you alive—even if the world wants to see you fall."

Isabella's lips trembled, but she nodded. "I promise."

Fernando's lips crashed onto hers again, this time fiercer, urgent. The city around them disappeared, replaced by the fire roaring between them.

But beneath the heat, a cold truth lingered: once you're in this life, there's no escaping the shadows.
