Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: The Beginning of Despair

Faced with Ike's almost harassing question, Chabashira-sensei simply ignored him.

"We're about to start homeroom. If you have any questions or anything you're concerned about, it's best to ask now."

As if certain someone would ask a question, Chabashira-sensei folded her arms and scanned the faces of Class D.

Immediately after Chabashira-sensei finished speaking, about seven or eight students raised their hands.

Chabashira-sensei smiled as if she had expected it.

Then she gestured for Amane, who was sitting at the back, to ask her question.

"Chabashira-sensei, may I go to the restroom?"

"..."

Chabashira-sensei was a little speechless.

She had seen Amane immediately raise her hand, wanting to ask a question, as soon as she finished speaking.

Recalling Amane's extremely unenthusiastic attitude during the last exam, Chabashira-sensei had a mischievous desire to see Amane's shocked expression.

An honor student assigned to Class D unable to accept reality and acting out of character.

Chabashira had seen it countless times.

But she still enjoyed eagerly anticipating the ungraceful performances of these naive honor students until they realized the true cruelty of this school.

However, what Chabashira-sensei never expected was that Amane would make such a request.

It caught Chabashira-sensei completely off guard.

Everyone in the class also looked at Amane strangely.

"Miyako-san, you should take care of personal matters before class. It's class time now. If you want to go to the restroom, wait until homeroom is over. You may sit down."

Amane sat down with a bitter expression.

She knew the atmosphere in the classroom wasn't quite right, but she really needed to go to the restroom.

There was nothing she could do about it.

"Does anyone else have any other questions?"

At this moment, Horikita uncharacteristically raised her hand.

"Horikita-san, do you have something to ask?"

"I'd like to ask Chabashira-sensei if our points for this month have been deposited."

Perhaps because Amane was treated harshly, Horikita's tone was very unpleasant.

It sounded like she was interrogating Chabashira-sensei.

"That's right, your points have been deposited, and there are no system errors or malfunctions. They have indeed been deposited into each of your accounts."

Chabashira smiled.

Isn't this exactly what she wanted to see?

As long as someone asked her this question, she could gradually unravel the class's mystery and then tell them, "You are all a bunch of hopeless failures!"

"Chabashira-sensei? What are you talking about? But our accounts still don't have a single point! Even this morning when I went to buy..."

Just as Hondou was about to explain further, Horikita interrupted him.

"What if Chabashira-sensei is telling the truth?"

Horikita's words left Hondou a little confused.

Even Amane felt anxious for him.

"Horikita-san, could you please elaborate?"

Hirata stopped Hondou, who was about to interject again, with his gaze.

Then he looked at Horikita with clear eyes, hoping to get an answer from her.

Because he had also noticed that morning that his points had not increased at all.

If it was just him, it would be fine.

Although Hirata also had social activities, he didn't spend an exorbitant amount and could still manage to get through next month if he was careful.

But he was worried that if no one in Class D had any income, then the entire Class D would face an unprecedented crisis.

He already knew of over twenty people who had spent all their points.

If points weren't distributed today, the survival of these individuals would become difficult.

"It's simple. First, if Chabashira-sensei is telling the truth, that points have been distributed, and it's not a school system error, then there's only one possibility I can think of: we received zero points."

As soon as Horikita finished speaking, she heard a snap.

"Horikita girl, I think I understand what you mean. So, this was a trap from the beginning, then?"

Kouenji Rokusuke propped his leg on the desk, talking to Horikita while fiddling with his small mirror.

"A trap? What are you talking about? I don't understand at all. I just want my points."

Karuizawa's words made Horikita a little dumbfounded.

It was hard to imagine such words coming from a leader figure of Class D girls like Karuizawa.

"Karuizawa-san, please don't rush. If we follow Kouenji-kun's explanation, the school deliberately gave us a large sum of points at the beginning, without restricting our spending, attempting to gradually lead everyone astray into pleasure."

"And then, when everyone has spent all their points, they refuse to distribute any more, trying to teach us a lesson?"

Hirata's analysis was well-reasoned, and even Horikita nodded seriously, thinking this was the most likely possibility.

"So that's it! Chabashira-sensei, I've realized the mistake of spending points recklessly. Please give us this month's 100,000 points!"

Ike, sitting in the back, took the lead in loudly requesting Chabashira-sensei.

Gradually, many others joined in, trying to reclaim their 100,000 points.

"That's right, Chabashira-sensei, we already know we were wrong. If you don't give us points, we'll starve to death in a few days!"

"Yes, we know we were wrong. Please give us the points!"

"Chabashira-sensei..."

Throughout the classroom, voices of apology and pleading rose and fell.

Unfortunately... Chabashira Sae paid no attention to their cries.

Instead, she watched with amusement as both the honor students and the utterly worthless underachievers in Class D desperately begged.

"I'm sorry, that's impossible. Besides, this isn't some school trap."

Chabashira-sensei said, then attached the poster tube to the blackboard and secured it with magnets.

Written above were the names of each class, followed by a series of numbers.

It looked like the class rankings.

Amane also scrutinized the numbers on the blackboard.

How to put it...

Even though Amane already knew there would be a certain gap between Class D and the other classes...

She was still somewhat incredulous when she saw the data-driven disparity firsthand.

Class A: 940

Class B: 650

Class C: 490

Class D: 0

"Open your eyes wide and look closely! This is the gap. You truly are the most remarkable Class D I've ever taught; in just one month, you've managed to spew out all one thousand class points. Truly impressive."

Chabashira-sensei clapped her hands.

A considerable number of people still looked at the numbers on the blackboard with confusion, not knowing what they meant.

Kouenji surveyed the bewildered faces around him and couldn't help but let out a hearty laugh tinged with sarcasm.

"I think I know why we're at zero. If this represents points, then the class points that Teacher just mentioned and our personal points should be at a one-to-one hundred ratio."

"This month, our class points are zero, so naturally, we won't have any personal points coming in. Am I right, Teacher?"

Kouenji's words instantly made those whose points had already returned to zero feel as if they had fallen into an ice cellar.

If it was just a test from the school, or if Chabashira-sensei was intentionally trying to remind everyone to value their points, then there was still a possibility that they could get their points back this month.

But if points were determined according to this table, then it meant that if they couldn't earn class points, it would be impossible for them to receive personal points.

So they stared intently at Chabashira-sensei, hoping for her denial.
