Evelin's POV
A chill ran down my spine as panic set in. I'd suggested Jimmy try to charm my uncle, hoping it might ease some tension.
"You can't pull the exact same move every time," I told him. "Mix things up a little."
Jimmy looked at me with complete sincerity. "I've never used chess to win someone over before."
So this was literally his first attempt. I had no words. 'Well, he's definitely new to this game.'
Come to think of it, whenever Jimmy played chess with anyone, he'd never be the one doing the impressing—everyone else would be trying to win his favor instead.
My uncle Gregory caught on that I'd put the Hamilton heir up to this whole act, and he rolled his eyes. "Enough with the games—just play me for real! You think I can't handle losing to you?"
"Absolutely," Jimmy said without hesitation.
I ended up stuck there, basically refereeing their match.
