Time passed quickly.
Over the past few days, the Basilisk had not appeared again. No new attacks had occurred, and that alone eased some of Aiden's anxiety.
Still, he did not relax.
He had spent hours in the Hogwarts library researching Basilisks and methods to counter them.
Unfortunately, most books offered the same advice.
If you encounter a Basilisk, Apparate immediately before it notices you.
There was just one problem.
Apparition was impossible inside Hogwarts.
And even if it were allowed, Aiden did not know how to Apparate.
He had also tried another approach.
Roosters.
Their crow was lethal to a Basilisk.
Yesterday afternoon, he had casually asked Rubeus Hagrid whether any roosters remained at Hogwarts.
Hagrid's answer had chilled him.
They had all died mysteriously.
On the same night Mrs. Norris had been attacked.
So the Basilisk truly feared roosters.
But now it was too late.
The birds were long dead.
If only he had known earlier, he might at least have recorded their crowing.
"No I cannot just sit and wait I need to ask Hagrid whether he can purchase more roosters from Diagon Alley."
The urgency pressing on Aiden's chest refused to fade.
As long as the Basilisk lived beneath Hogwarts, no Muggle-born student was safe.
Including him.
Sirius Black would appear next year.
But Black, dangerous though he was, had never been known to harm students indiscriminately.
The Basilisk was different.
It killed without reason.
Restless, Aiden lay in bed staring at the ceiling.
Sleep would not come.
He opened the system panel once more.

After a moment's thought, Aiden grabbed his wand and quietly left his bed.
His roommates were sound asleep.
He slipped out of the dormitory and closed the door softly behind him.
The Hufflepuff corridor was silent.
Unlike Gryffindor, night wandering was not a common pastime here.
He had barely taken a few steps when a familiar voice stopped him.
"Hey, Aiden, what are you doing?"
He froze and turned.
Cedric Diggory stepped out from a nearby corner, a bright glint in his eyes.
"Cedric."
Aiden lowered his voice.
"What are you planning to do?"
Cedric crossed his arms casually.
"Are you going out?"
Aiden hesitated for only a second.
"Are you?"
Cedric blinked, clearly surprised by the directness.
"When I met Fred and George yesterday, they mentioned something interesting."
"I did not expect you to be wandering at night like them."
Aiden exhaled slowly.
"I was only going to the kitchen."
"I have been hungry at night recently."
"You probably feel the same, Cedric."
Cedric smiled.
"Then let us go together."
"I suddenly feel hungry as well."
He draped an arm over Aiden's shoulder, making it clear he would not allow him to sneak off alone.
Aiden knew he had been caught.
"Fine."
"I was planning to explore the castle."
"Are you coming?"
"Cedric."
"If we get caught, how do you plan to deal with Filch?"
Cedric countered calmly.
Aiden spread his hands.
"If we are caught, we run."
"I thought so."
"You came unprepared."
Cedric's smile widened.
From inside his robes, he pulled out something thin and shimmering.
A silvery gauze-like fabric.
Aiden's eyes widened.
"Invisibility Cloak."
He stared at it with open fascination.
"You have been waiting here for me, have you not?"
"Not long."
"You arrived almost at the same time I did."
Cedric draped the cloak over both of them.
Aiden watched in amazement as his body vanished from sight.
His gaze lingered on the cloak, filled with barely concealed admiration.
Cedric coughed lightly.
Aiden quickly straightened.
"You were well prepared."
"Even securing an Invisibility Cloak."
Fred and George lent it to me yesterday.
"They used it to avoid Filch before."
Under the cloak, their voices echoed softly through the empty corridor.
To anyone passing by, it would sound as though ghosts were whispering in the dark.
And together, invisible beneath silver threads—
They began their second night excursion.
