Aiden nervously grabbed Cedric's shoulder, pulling him down as they both crouched low to the ground.
"The Basilisk is here?"
Cedric whispered, not forgetting what Aiden had told him earlier.
There was a Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, and it was being controlled to roam around Hogwarts.
At first, the name had only sounded familiar to him, as if he had read it somewhere before. Now, he suddenly remembered.
It was from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
That book, written by Newt Scamander, described the Basilisk as one of the most dangerous magical creatures in existence.
It possessed terrifying lethality.
If a wizard made direct eye contact with it, death was almost certain.
Cedric couldn't even imagine what would happen if such a creature suddenly appeared in the Great Hall during a meal.
More than half the students at Hogwarts would probably die instantly.
Amidst his fear, one question lingered in his mind.
Why had Filch's cat survived?
Was it somehow different?
That was the only mystery in the entire incident.
It hadn't died.
"Shh."
Aiden tightened his grip on Cedric's shoulder, his face turning grim as he focused on the sound.
It was very close.
But it shifted constantly, making it impossible to pinpoint its exact location.
"Aiden!"
Cedric's voice trembled slightly.
"Look over there."
Aiden followed his gaze.
For a brief moment, he saw it—
A stretch of dark, overlapping scales reflecting a cold, black sheen.
Dense.
Unnatural.
Enough to make their scalps tingle.
Then it was gone.
The reflection vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
But Aiden didn't relax.
The faint scraping sound was still there.
The Basilisk hadn't left.
Aiden frowned.
Something didn't make sense.
He had clearly heard the sound moving away earlier.
So how had it suddenly appeared here again?
"Let's go. We'll follow it."
His expression shifted several times before he finally made his decision.
If he could find Ginny Weasley, and catch the moment she sent the Basilisk back into the Chamber of Secrets, it would be the perfect opportunity to deal with the diary.
Faced with that possibility, Aiden no longer cared about the danger.
If he missed this chance, there might never be another.
"What?"
"We should find a professor, Aiden."
Cedric's tone was firm. He couldn't let his friend walk into danger like this.
"They won't believe us, Cedric."
"Not until they see proof, or another victim appears. And how would you even explain the Chamber of Secrets, or the Basilisk?"
Aiden looked directly into Cedric's eyes.
Cedric opened his mouth to argue—then stopped.
He understood.
Without evidence, no one would believe them.
And they had no way to explain how they knew any of this.
Cedric didn't even know where the Chamber of Secrets was.
If a professor questioned them, they wouldn't have answers.
Of course, Cedric didn't know that Aiden already did.
"You stay here. I'll go take a look and come right back."
The scraping sound was fading again.
Aiden grew anxious, unwilling to lose this opportunity.
If he missed this chance to find Ginny alone, next time he would have to approach her directly—and deal with Tom Riddle's diary while being on guard.
"I'm coming with you."
"Cedric?"
"Don't refuse me so quickly. I won't let a friend face danger alone."
Cedric's smile was calm, but his eyes were resolute.
Hearing the sound fade further, Aiden clenched his jaw.
"Fine. But promise me this."
"Absolutely do not attack the Basilisk. We'll stay hidden, follow it, and see where it goes."
"I'm not an idiot. Why would I attack that monster? Trust me."
"Alright. Let's go."
Aiden nodded and immediately ran in the direction the Basilisk had gone.
Cedric followed closely behind.
As they moved, faint distortions appeared on their Invisibility Cloak, revealing traces of their movement.
After they left—
Harry Potter slowly removed his own Invisibility Cloak, his expression complicated.
He looked down the corridor ahead, where the path split—one direction leading upward, the other downward.
He hesitated.
Then, making his decision, he quickly followed after them.
The cloak settled over him once more.
His presence vanished completely.
Ahead, Aiden led the way at full speed.
When they reached the staircase, he paused briefly.
Then he heard it.
The sound was coming from below.
His eyes lit up.
Myrtle's bathroom was downstairs.
That meant the Basilisk was likely returning to the Chamber of Secrets through the bathroom entrance.
And as the one controlling it, Ginny Weasley had to be there as well.
This path was dangerous.
But Aiden had already made his choice.
And once he decided something—
He never turned back.
