After reading the analysis, everyone reacted differently.

He should have said something earlier. If he had, Lockhart might have handed over the job. Then they could have simply switched positions, which would have been perfect.
Although Professor Dumbledore would most likely never agree.
Even without asking, Lockhart understood that this idea was unrealistic.
If he became the Potions Professor, he would probably be exposed the very next day, reported to the Ministry of Magic, and sent straight to Azkaban for life.
